Let's say that DC makes the decision to keep Bruce Wayne wherever he is for the foreseeable future. Do you think that Dick Grayson will be able to surpass his mentor and be a better Batman than Bruce?

Hmm,

Good question. I think that he will be able to surpass Bruce physically (if he hasn't already), and he's a better leader, and rallier than Bruce; however, with regards to intelligence, and toughness...I can't say. If Dick's character is put through the wringer, and has some very, very dark days - all of which he overcomes, then yes. But he's got a long way to go and several trials of fire to go through before he can fill Bruce's shoes. Dick just doesn't see things like Batman should. Does the mission consume him like it did Batman? No. He constantly seeks happiness and balance in both his identities. Nightwing is really Dick Grayson, whereas Bruce Wayne was really Batman. That may have to change.

  Great question Will44!!

There's only one Batman.  Nightwing will do his duty and honor the cowl and as he has shown he will do it his way.  I can't see Batman (Bruce) being gone for more than a year.

ha ha, it wasn't that long ago that Dick Grayson was often shown to be the detective equal to Bruce Wayne. It was pretty much all throughout the 80's when Dick was in the Titans.

Personally I think Dick Grayson can surpass Bruce Wayne as a vigilante, but sales and popularity will never really let that happen. Eventually Bruce should get old and slow down, while Dick Grayson should just be starting to hit his prime... right?

I see what you're saying Will44,

I don't know if I agree. I don't think that Dick is anywhere near Batman's level as a detective, or in intellect. In fact, I think that Tim Drake is more academically gifted than Dick. Mr. Terrific describes himself as the third smartest man on the planet, one of the other two was Bruce Wayne. Over time, things could change, and I thoroughly expect Dick to get better. Much better.

You're right. Bruce should be slowing down and aging (can't get much slower than dead, right?), but many of us don't like to accept that with the heroes we love. I am a huge Nightwing fan, but I can't say that I could ever truly be comfortable with anyone wearing the cape and cowl but Bruce...unless it's an elseworlds story, then it's fun! Unless Dick can bring something to the table in a way that we have never seen before...something so cool that we acrually begin to see him as Batman, that we actually want him to stay Batman, then I expect he won't be Batman for more than a couple of years. In that time frame, Bruce will have returned and retired probably to try and find himself and BANG Dick Grayson's murder makes him put the costume back on. We'll see.
It'll be fun to watch, huh? Thanks for a great discussion Will44.

There is no way Dick will ever surpass Bruce. When I heard the news, I cried a tiny bit. Although I really like Dick, I hope he dies and then can give the cowl back to its' rightful owner. BTW, what happened to Tim?

Tim kinda went a little crazy.

During the whole Batman RIP/Battle for the Cowl deal, Tim was more focused than I've ever seen him...and more dangerous. He was injured severely (it seemed) by Jason Todd, but he recovered. He left embittered because Dick chose that snot-nose ounk Damian to be Robin. Dick said Damian needed it, so Tim left and became Red Robin. He's channeling Batman big-time, but seems to be getting sloppy; heck in the first issue, somebody already found out who he was.

He is also severely fixated on finding Bruce Wayne because he beleives the Bruce is still alive. Tim's lost 2 dads now...it seems to unbalanced him. But maybe not. We'll see.

It's at times like this when I rue being in a foreign country and not receiving any of the new comics when America does. I'm so far behind. :..(
