| Okay this here is a 1.0 FR a definate 1. Missing centerfold, amateur restoration, cover detached etc. Price sticker has no bearing on this grade. Now, my question is if this same comic book received an 8.0 VF (it won't, but if it did) How much would the grade change if the only major defect was this price sticker on the cover? Also, how high can a book go with a cover sticker being the only defect? The OGG shows a price tag residue (not the sticker, just the rectangular leave behind) going as high as a 6.5 FN+... Can a book go higher in grade with just tape residue from a price tag sticker being the only defect? Thanx in advance everyone!

| The opinions from other boards are landing in the no higher than a VG. area. Seems kinda harsh when a sticker doesn't go as high as a bad dust shadow or out of register printing does (6 and a 7) but a pulled off sticker can get a 6.5 I guess the sticker is just an eyesore people don't want. To pull or not to pull...that is the question.. LoL! Any other opinions??

I would say 5.0 maybe. That is the max I would go as long as the rest of the book is better than 5.0. Now if the rest of the book was 9.x I would definitely put a qualifier in about that but that is how I deal with major defects on otherwise nice books. I don't subscribe to the CGC way of qualifying which places the higher grade front and centre.
As for the reasoning why a sticker is frowned upon much more than dust shadow or out of register printing is that dust shadow is NOT serious damage and out of register printing is beyond the control of the collector that is a printing error and it occurs/occurred fairly frequently. Dust shadows and out of register printing do NOT compromise the structure of the book they are aesthetic defects. Stickers can compromise the integrity of a book because they have glues/adhesives which can or do damage books. If one tries to remove one they can remove part of the book. Essentially they are the same tape and there are not many people that would accept tape above 4.5-5.0.
BTW it looks like you bought that from Tony.

I've used lighter fluid to remove stickers from paperback books and record jackets with great success. I recently used it on a comic(first attempt) and ended up taking off some of the color when trying to wipe off some of the excess glue. (I probably just didn't wait long enough for the fluid to dissipate.) It was a $3 book so it was no big deal.

I would definitely say remove the thing. I've also had success with a white eraser. Slowly rubbing it across the residue seems to ball up a lot of it which can then just be picked off. I'm scared of using fluid but that is apparently doable too. At any rate you should be able to get it to be very minor and so an otherwise mint book I think could be as high as an 8

Lighter fluid is my number 1 choice. I have used it many times but not on a comic. I have used it on action figure packages ie: Star Wars, which are cardboard and the lighter fluid doesn't seem to affect the paper at all. Just apply it so the sticker soaks up 100% and let it sit for about 30 seconds...wipe off the excess that is not soaked up by the sticker, then see if it peels really easy...if there is any resistense, apply a little more or wait a little longer, and retry. When it's ready, you'll know it as soon as you start pulling at it. Then soak a little more fluid on a paper towel or Kleenex and wipe off the remaining residue. You have to work quickly though as the lighter fluid evaporates very quickly.
