Slaymaster (6/5/2009) Thats pretty cool that they give you grading notes...Did they give you the grading notes over the phone, or can you get notes sent back with the graded comics? If only they would send typed notes, but no, only by phone. They must get so behind due to answering customers requesting grader notes. Dan

Dan
They shouldn't. They should all be on computer and they should have clerical staff that can answer these requests.

Online grader notes should be available to everyone (since slabbing is a selling tool...all notes behind a grade should be readily transparent to the public). But whenever I call for grader notes, the operator takes note of one of the books of interest then directs me to a "staff grader" on another line.

| Well MagicDan, I don't know much about grading, I just eye-ball 'em...but I'll tellya one thing: I am dang impressed by those sweet books you have, but even more impressed by your abilities as a grader. I have never seen anyone come so close to figuring the grades that they'd get from the CGC. It's plum hard to figure, for me anyways. Congratulations pardner. Well done. TEX

It's all exposure. Exposure to CGC graded books, that is. I visit Heritage Auction archieves, Ebay listings and Comiclink to get a look at their treasures. Then I take my own grading experience and grade harshly on my own books; as if I were a buyer trying to haggle my way to a better price. If all else fails, like I can't find the book CGC'd at all, I grade to my experience then drop it .2 points if I give it a grade of 9.2 and above and drop .5 points on what I initially grade at 9.0 and below. This is so I don't get too disappointed if a book comes back lower than my initial grade. It also assures I only send in grade worthy books to CGC...I ain't made of money. I really was surprised by the ASM 201 because that printer's crease on lower right front cover was deep and nearly 3 inches long. It still got a 9.6 but I was prepared for the 9.2-9.4. I sent it because I love the cover and thought it was very classic looking. Then a slight non-color breaking bend (more like a wave) in the rear cover corner of one of my Next Men 21 cost the book's grade .2 points to a 9.4. Live and learn. I like Earl's grading because he's harsh in the way I'd like to be on books. Excersicing that kind of discipline on your own books is a difficult skill that would do all collectors well to practice.

Good advice there magic, I'm only getting into grading myself and really find it hard to be harsh. I tend to get a second opinion from my wife who loves the grading side of the collecting and as a school teacher without any attachment to the comics always seem to give harser grades. I just wish one day I can be as good as some of the guys on here or a few of the other boards i visit.

(I need a wife... so many on here have better halves who are into comics and collecting, makes me jealous. )
.I wont lie, shinedown's version is good, but Lynyrd Skynyrd's is what Jesus, Chuck Norris, Chesty Puller, Ronald Reagan, and my Father listen to every morning when they wake up. -'bobthebanshee' on Skynard's 'Simple Man' (an all-time favorite)

| This is very interesting and helpful for me because I was planning on sending in my issues of ASM #194 and #196 here soon and have been kind of curious as to what they will be graded as. I feel like I grade kind of hard myself, but seeing your issues, what you thought you would get, and what CGC actually graded them as was a tremendous help! Thanks a bunch for this post and all the details.

Things I noticed.
1 - Firestorm 1 is under graded. From this scan and the other one you posted I see no reason why it should be an 8.5.
2 - Amazing Spider-Man 201 is overgraded. It has an ink stamp on the upper left corner.
3 - Amazing Spider-Man 196 also has ink on the spine. How it received a 9.6, I do not know.
4 - And on Amazing Spider-Man 194, the bar code is crossed out in marker. I don't know if it's just a 9.6 book IMO.
5 - Last but not least, your New Mutants 98 looks like an exact twin for my copy. 9.8 is about right.
Just my opinions here...
I'm coming for you Fantastic Four #48!!!
