| You might have missed this when it came out ( I know I did). Last October, The Comics Journal devoted an entire issue (#292) to interviews with Gene Deitch and his three sons Kim, Simon and the other guy (forgot his name already - he's the youngest of the bunch). The Kim Deitch interview is extensive, covering his time with the East Village Other and early underground comix. Very interesting and lots of info that was new to me - even though I've read quite a few interviews with Kim Deitch before. His brother Simon also had a certain amount of involvement with underground comix and father Gene is an animator who was with UPA in the 1940s and created Tom Terrific at Terrytoons in the fabulous 1950s. The issue is worth searching out if you missed it the first time around. Funny thing, the following issue of The Comics Journal had an interview with S. Clay Wilson but it wasn't nearly as good.

I'll have to check it out.
I've liked the small amount of what I've seen of Kim Deitch's work and Gene Deitch made my favorite Tom & Jerry cartoons. He bridged the gap between Hanna-Barbera and Chuck Jones. All of his T&Js were made in Czechoslovakia on a drastically lower budget than what H-B had, which led to the differing style of animation and the bizarre sound effects.
Despite having a rather uncommon last name, I never would have connected the two. Probably because I always forget the father's name.

| Thanks for the tip! I, too, missed it...I've long been a Deitch-family fan...and had the pleasure and honor of having dinner and conversation with Gene and his wife when he was the featured speaker at our annual DaVinci Days festival a few years back We had some great laughs remembering Tom Terrific and Mighty Manfred, the Wonder Dog...

Tomorrow is Kim's birthday. You can send birthday wishes to him (and quite a few other UG artists) via FaceBook if you'd like (there's a few on MySpace as well).
