Two points:

1) Overstreet compiles their prices over the previous year from when it is released each spring...so "standard or not...the prices are already several months old when the book sees print...

2) We update prices on a daily basis...somewhere in the guide. Considering the number of issues we have listed and the number of grades for each...it is virtually impossible to update each and every one on a daily basis. And we try to base updates on true current market trends...

3) Market trends can be deceiving in the short run. Has the value of an issue truely risen if three people bid a book ridiculously high over a one week period?...I've watched issues get into a bidding war and go for multiple guide prices...and the next copy that comes up goes for half guide...

4) I, miyself, have sold several early Silver-age books in midrange condition, and have been consistently getting bids and offers of no more than half guide...so what does that say about the market?
And i haven't paid "guide" for any of my purchases other than major high-grade copies for several years now...Yet I keep adding to my collection...

5) We count on you, the members, to be our eyes and ears out there...which is why we pay such close attention to completed sales and trends you bring up in our "market watch" forum...

Very informative Shadow!  Now I clipped this part of your prose to once again point out Tales of Suspense Iron Man issues.  I know I'm a broken record but my similar thread a while back was ignored so I'm trying to get the point across.   Keep up the good work!

I have an area of concern which I have lately noticed.  There seems to be rather large discrepancies in the Silver Age (at least) pricing  between Overstreet and CPG.  I am referring to the latest Overstreet in this and am running some price comparisons to issues I have recently bought.

CaptainZero00 (5/6/2009)
The amount I pay for individual or groups of comics is completely irrelevant to the topic at hand.  The the issue that I raised is about the vast and universal Silver Age price variances between Overstreet and CPG.

But to satisfy your curiosity, I paid cover price for most of my collection.

I was referring to the issues you recently brought in your quote above.

It would be helpful in determing which guide is reflecting reality to get a flavour of prices you paid for mid grade silver at the moment on each title. Many collectors are reporting buying books for less than current CPG guide on mid grade books at the moment. We might well be under what people are paying on some series like TOS and perhaps Avengers that we need to know about but I think the majority of MID GRADE books listed here already reflect an optomistic view of the market.

Views?

Optomistic for sure Earl.  I generally buy mid to low-high grade and what I'm paying is usually half of CPG.  It's fair to say that's normal of guides, the same can always be said about OSPG.  However, key issues and very early issues of important SA titles is usually pretty close on with CPG value. I don't think a reworking of the price guide is in order but it's important to up values of the under guided as such TOS and... ?  I can't think of anything else really but my expertise is SA/BA Marvel books.

Avengers may have been over guided here a few months ago but the guide is REALLY close to actual selling points now.  A happy accident?

So the crux of the matter is, ultimately what the market will bear.

Certain and very few key issues go for at or above guide value, with high grade certified and unrestored issues hitting amazing highs.  Amazing Fantasy #15, lately Iron Man #1, Uncanny X-Men #1 and a few others all fit this bill.

Selling SA books, I have found that many titles are rather cold right now.  On the other hand, mid to high grade Bronze Age books sell remarkably well and at very near guide prices.  Also I note that BA issues are very equitable in price in both Overstreet and CPG.

Now to go off subject a bit.  What do you all think early Neal Adams original art should go for?

Neal Adams' pieces usually go for over a grand...that's a nice price for that one. But then again, art is like rookie cards...if the guy is hot, the price is up...if no one remembers his name or he's not in the spotlight, your lucky to sell the thing...

What else is Neal and his studio doing these days?...beside the "Nasonex" bee commercials....

The man does tons of commisions and other sketches that he sells very often.  Aside from that he's going nuts about his expanding earth theory on a regular basis.

With all due respect to Boboset's TOS issues....I think IM #1 is overvalued.  It really is not that notable an issue in my mind......

Of course, I would love to see the value take off as it is the only #1 I have from the period...but I am not even sure if it should be worth the $300 listed for my 8.0. (Okay, technically $294.00).
