This one has me a wee bit confused.

Check out these scans of slabbed X-Men #2

Both are graded at 8.0 and both are about to gae their sales closed off on.

The first book is going for $976 and the second for $1600.

Is this just the luck of the bidding or is there something wrong with the cheaper book that I just don't see?

Probably luck of the bidding.

There is a school of thought that the older label books were graded a little more harshly than the newer label books, so it could be somebody that knows something about the older label book looking for a resub... but the price difference is pretty big. Do both auctions end at the same time, or is the older one out in front of it? If the older one is out in front, the newer one will probably catch up. Usually the newer label books go for more, but I guess on this one, it doesn't really matter -- it's a highly desireable book.

If it were me, I'd go for the cheaper of the two. From the scans, they look about the same to me...

No, not bidding. Was just cruising the web and saw it. You can check it out for yourself at comiclink.com

The firs one seems to have some color fading on the N in "X-MEN" which can be throwing people off and having them bid less. That along with the idea the CGC was harsher on grading with the older labels probably have people thinking they can crack it, press it, and get it re graded higher.

CGC doesn't consider it restro. Some people do, some people consider it more of a conservation issue.

I believe CGC has stated that they definitely cannot 100 percent determine if a book was pressed or not therefore it wouldn't count as resto.

Comiclink sales are set up for whatever the seller is willing to accept, so final sale price is not necessarily indicative of the market value of the book.  Both of those books were listed in January 2008, however, it is not clear how long it took for each book to sell.  There is another one currently running, listed April 2008, with ask price of $1750 and current top bid of $1100.
