Hi,

I recently acquired a couple of comics that aren't the size I expected them to be and I am wondering if they are reprints or have been trimmed. Can anyone help with this?

One is Heroic Comics #33 (Nov, 1945). It is 6 5/8 inches wide and not the Golden Age width I was expecting.

Unlike the other GA books I have that show their age, this book is in almost new condition. Since the book is the size of modern comics it makes me wonder if it is a reprint

The other book is New Heroic Comics #92 (Aug, 1954). At almost 6 3/4 inches wide, it is not quite the width of the other books that I have from that era. It is also in almost new condition.

Do I have reprints, trimmed books, or the real thing?

Thanks,
octal

I believe Heroic's were narrower than most comics. I can't remember though.

What does the indicia say? Maybe provide a scan/pic of it so we can look at it.

The indicias give no indication the books are not the real deal. There's no reprint notice or dates other than the expected ones, 1945 for Heroic #33 and 1954 for New Heroic #92.

I'll see if I can upload scans.

Thanks,
octal

As info, the covers of the books look just like scans online. There is no indication in the indicia or elsewhere that they are reprints.

Is there anyone reading who has the books and can measure them? That way I could determine if they've been trimmed.

It's my understanding that trimming is usually a very subtle operation. They won't trim off a 1/4 inch from one edge, just enough to get rid of jaggies and stuff. I never think of trimming as actually affecting the visible size of a comic.

Am I wrong about this?

Depends on who's doing the trimming.  I've seen very subtle trimming like you talked about and others trimming a book front cover to back cover while taking off almost a half inch at times.  I've seen some ugly trim jobs before.

Is there less cover than these?

If there is less to the covers of yours, they are in all likelihood trimmed.

I can't imagine they would have been reprinted.

EDIT: I'd sigh if it would do any good.....

Uhmmm...Argus...you can't link to Grand Comicbook Database covers...

You can capture and post...but you can't link...

Linking costs them additional bandwith time, so they removed that ability...
