This topic makes me think of other things that other people paid a lot of money for.....then it went away......like Beta, Laser Discs, and lots of mini disc variations, none of which caught on.

Don't get me started on Laserdiscs...I was one of those aficianados who ended up getting burned...though I still have my player hooked up and it does get an occasional workout.....it caused me to hold out for a long time before buying a dvd player, as I wanted to make sure the format was going to take hold a tad better than LD....still, I think LD's are slightly better picture-wise than dvds...their size, though, is a major issue and the difference in quality doesn't quite make up for the heft required from LD. Oh well, it was expensive but short-lived, and when the format went bust I was able to pick up many films on LD for under $1...all in all it evened itself out, but when my player finally dies I'm going to have a lot of Frisbees to chuck into the nearest landfill.....

If you have a pretty good collection of LD movies...I would highly suggest keeping an eye out for a good deal on another player on Craigslist...or ebay.....and buy one or 2...and stick them away in a closet for when your's finally does die. The more time that goes by, the harder those players will be to come by.

Thanks for the tip, but at this point in time very few LDs that I own have NOT been released on DVD, and I'm talking mostly supplemental material that hasn't gotten transfered even though the film may be available....stuff like the supplements on the Criterion Dr. Strangelove LD, or the David Cronenberg commentary on Crash...things like that, that eventually if it doesn't get released properly, I'll just copy it myself and jettison the LDs....at this point I'm not feeling that wed to the objects but I will hold onto them for the nonce.....because I'm too lazy to do otherwise, and the collector/packrat mindset is in control....

Right now I am attempting to purchase 150 'original' Pokemon cards, in all actuality the original base set was 102 cards and had trainers and prof Oaks etc. If anyone remembers the original poster with the 150 on it, those are what I am currently searching for. It is my intent to mount them (somehow) and frame them in the order they were in on the poster. Eventually sub in as many holos as I can, and just wait for the girls to come a knockin'.

Give your orders and ultimatums to those who choose to obey, or are too cowardly to fight, not to me. Or learn again the difference between a god of thunder... and a mortal man in a metal suit.

Let me know when you're getting ready to chuck the LD's ...I'll give 'em a good home...

It's a shame how people always want smaller copies...LD's gave way to CD's and DVD's...
8-tracks gave way to cassettes...
Beta gave way to VHS (Beta tape is wider)...
When in reality...if you read any of the technical mags...the larger formats are far superior in capturing the qualities of the original recording...

I have some Spawn pogs (or Spogs)

Have about a 12 foot stack of LPs and 6 comic long boxes filled with VHS tapes... those are low value.  I don't have any lazer disks, so at least I saved that money.

Other toys-n-such...

Moose's Mighty Beanz (those were fun)

Monster in My Pocket (there are some color variantions that sell for big$$)

Collectible Card Games (other than Magic)

Stratego Legends (booster packs are HTF)

Attacktix

I liked "beans"...though they had absolutely no one watching for quality control on their production line...
Bought all of mine (Marvel and TNMT) at the "Dollar Store" after the blush had worn off the fad...

And there are thousands of CCGs (collectible card games) that never caught on...I know...I own portions of many of them...

Dollar store? Nicely done, I bought 3 cases of TMNT Beanz from a seller in Australia before they hit the US (ouch), later I bought cases of Series 2 from him for 90% off - those were fun to give as birthday & x-mas presents.

I might buy one of those some day, you can find Mint Sealed copies on ebay for $20 or less.

Paid $25,000,000 for royalties, then gave the developer 1 week to create the game.

Atari deserved to lose buckets of money.  That game plus the equally ill-executed Pac-Man destroyed the home videogame industry (initial print run = 20% more than all the Atari systems sold to date. Marketing figured everyone who had an Atari would buy the game, plus new people would buy their system just to play Pac-man)

From the ashes came Nintendo, Sega and Sony, so in the long run it was a good deal for all of us...  Today, the industry is bigger than Hollywood.  Let that be a lesson in what happens when government fails to bail-out a floundering industry.

You know your stuff!  I also find it interesting that Atari nixed the deal to purchase nintendo when they were about to release the NES.  It was over some real stupidness, I think it was because nintendo made a demo for marketing purposes alone of the game Donkey Kong.  Atari freaked and tried suing them, effectively pulling the deal off the table.

Nintendo then in turn treated Sony poorly when they were developing the SNES CD-Rom add on.  Sony, then fed up with Nintendo went and made their own system with the plans for their add on and that became The first Sony Playstation.  There's crazy stories in gaming history.

Good stories Boboset.

I think videogames in general can count as "collectibles that never quite made it".  The old Atari games came with a mini-comic, and I read somewhere that some people collect comicbooks.

Last week a sealed SNES Super Mario Kart auctioned for $800+ and a sealed NES Metroid went for $400, but mostly videogames don't go up in value.
