Okay so I've been a fan and now I'm trying to get my comic book out there. My question is, thus far a comic book and starting a business (pay business license, tax id, TM business name, etc) costs LOADS OF MONEY and I just got out of college. I know they say try to get 50K  to start a business but I don't have that.

Anyway so I am getting my comic book together and my question is, for you comic convention goers out there:

1) How likely are you to go up to an Indy/self-published booth? vs just going to the big names (Marvel, DC) only?

2) Do you get intimidated and keep like 10 feet away and look from a distance at a new indy booth (you know so you won't feel guilty that you need to buy it if they talk to you)?

3) Would you buy a t-shirt (or pencil or button) as well with the comic book name on it?

4) Have any tips for a newbie seller This'll be my first convention this year?

thanks!!!

I've talked to indy creators at cons, but I've never bought their stuff. Friends with a former comic publisher (Iron Cat), but I didn't buy his stuff either.

I buy hardly any current comics, indys included. if I were to talk to an indy publisher at a convention, I might buy his comic just to check it out.

Not so sure about a pencil...

Coolness folks. Thanks for the honestly. Just curious, how come you talk to the indy guy but not buy the comic? You dont' buy comics (but movies/action figures/etc) or....

Just curious. I might skip the t-shirts and just stick to the comic...

As a collector -- indy comic rarely ever go up in value.

As a reader, why would I want to invest money, time and interest (if I actually liked the book) into something that will not likely have follow up issues or have a lousy publishing schedule?

If I did buy a comic under those circumstances, I'd do it in the same spirit that I give money to musicians in the subway station, mostly to help them out. Buying an indy from some guy at a convention ... how would I get the next issue if I actually liked the thing?

You might try having poster(at min 2' X 3') of your artwork hanging or on an easel behind you. A good display of your art would help draw attention to your stand.

I would never buy a pencil or a button, that's the sort of stuff people usually give away.

I would consider buying a book. It would depend on the genre and art.

I have bought t-shirts from indie sellers. One by Tom King with a picture of a giant Bert(from Sesame Street) destroying a city and scientist on his with the caption "Dear God, what have I Done!" and one by Shannon Wheeler of Too Much Coffee Man, but that were during secondary meetings. I wear a lot of t-shirts, so if I saw one that I found it appealing, I would purchase it(as long as the price was reasonable).

Lastly, not to sound crude but maybe a little cynical, if you had a "hot" or semi-attractive chick with some exposed cleavage sitting next to you, then you might increase your sales.

hahahaha. A hot chick. You know I went to a comic book convention a while back and this lady was ultra hot, but that was too intimidating. I didn't see anyone at their booth either. It was a man and this hot blonde. Maybe it was because they were standing up. I don't know.

Yeah I've heard about getting an easel. Not so sure yet, like if I get the comic blown up and have that on the easel or have another picture maybe? Or a sign on just what it's about

I totally get what some are saying about the schedule of the book being released or if there's even a sequel that's why I'm getting the second picture ready to put at the end "Next issue..." and then the picture. Yeah I totally get it, but I'm inspired by the TMNT guys b/c they had to keep pushing until they got it together to get something out a lot. I guess I can put a myspace page for people to go to and maybe hint at the next set of stories b/c I have 8 story concepts. I just wrote one yesterday even with lines/script (words) so... I'm excited.

Maybe I should just say it might be a "quarterly" issue then, until it starts happening, b/c like people said if no one buys it or more likely enough of it at one convention, then I gotta go to more conventions to sell the whole thing out to get the money back to fund issue 2's printing. (Printing is not cheap and having a booth isn't cheap either, wow, it's a sobering experience)

You should also set up a website, if you can, plus myspace and facebook pages and have a sign-up sheet for email addresses. It's the internet age, take advantage.
