Sonic_Drift (2/23/2009) I was planning at some point in the near future to do this for titles from 1983 because it is the year I was born.
Dang youngin's..... -slym agreed. Being born after the '70s is just foolishness. ditto... After, reading Earl's very interesting endeavor, I've given thought to when I got into DC...and we would be talking 1970-71...reading from my brother's collection..The books he had, and the one's he bought...the one's that came out that year...trying to collect those, would probably break me, would have to see what i have in my own collection first..then go from there. this could be fun..

Snipe-Chi (5/15/2009) Earl,
Are you sure that you don't already own all of the Detective Comics issues from 510-521? According to your world list of what you own, you have all 12 issues. The issues you are missing are 507 and 509.
If you were an avid Batman reader back in 1982 then you would not have missed any of the Detective issues because in the 1982 cover dates Batman and Detective comics storylines began crossing over back and forth each month. The two titles became intertwined.
In fact that's why I have a beef with the valuations of the two titles. It doesn't chime that the Batman NM value is 14$ while the Detective NM value is only 6$ if both titles featured the same storyline, the same writer, the same artist (Gene Colan), etc.
If one is a true collector, I think complete story arcs should take priority over just complete issue number runs of only one title. Both titles should be in equal demand.
And that is why CGC-only collectors are missing out on what comic book collecting is all about.
Thanks for checking. Living in the UK issues of US comics were not aways easy to find for a young teen so I did indeed miss those issues of Tec back in 1982. I finally picked them up about 10 days ago which is why CPG shows I now have them but the checklist I posted earlier in this thread shows I stilll need them. My up to date checklist looks like this... | Title | Issues | Total | Own | | Action | 527 to 538 | 12 | 12 | | Adventure | 489 to 494 | 6 | 6 | | All Star Squadron | 5 to 16, An1 | 13 | 13 | | Arak Son of Thunder | 5 to 16 | 12 | 12 | | Arion Lord of Atlantis | 1 to 2 | 2 | 2 | | Batman | 343 to 354, An8 | 13 | 13 | | Best of DC Digest | 20 to 31 | 12 | 6 | | Blackhawk | 251 to 253 | 3 | 3 | | Brave and the Bold | 182 to 193 | 12 | 12 | | Camelot 3000 | 1 | 1 | 1 | | Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew | 1 to 10 | 10 | 10 | | Daring New Adventures of Supergirl | 1 to 2 | 2 | 2 | | DC Comics Presents | 41-52, An1 | 13 | 13 | | DC Special Blue Ribbon Digest | 17 to 24 | 8 | 7 | | Detective Comics | 510 to 521 | 12 | 12 | | Flash | 305 to 316 | 12 | 12 | | Fury of Firestorm | 1 to 7 | 7 | 7 | | GI Combat | 237 to 248 | 12 | 5 | | Ghosts | 108 to 112 | 5 | 2 | | Green Lantern | 148 to 159 | 12 | 12 | | House of Mystery | 300 to 311 | 12 | 11 | | Jonah Hex | 56 to 67 | 12 | 12 | | Justice League of America | 198 to 209 | 12 | 12 | | Legion of Super-Heroes | 283 to 294, An1 | 13 | 13 | | Marvel and DC Present 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | | Masters of the Universe 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | | New Adventures of Superboy | 25 to 36 | 12 | 12 | | New Teen Titans | 15 to 26, An1 | 13 | 13 | | Night Force | 1 to 5 | 5 | 5 | | Phantom Zone | 1 to 4 | 4 | 4 | | Secrets of Haunted House | 44 to 46 | 3 | 2 | | Sgt. Snipe-Chi (5/21/2009)
Snipe-Chi (5/15/2009) Earl,
Are you sure that you don't already own all of the Detective Comics issues from 510-521? According to your world list of what you own, you have all 12 issues. The issues you are missing are 507 and 509. [...]I checked out your collection because I was curious to see which House of Mystery issue you were missing. Back in '82 I had purchased a single issue of HoM for the whole year. I bought it to cut out a back cover order coupon. I did not intend to make it part of my collection. Nevertheless, it was a very good read. I was introduced to Andrew Bennett, I...Vampire and the plot involved another take on Jack the Ripper. It sported a cover by Joe Kubert, and nice artwork by Tom Sutton. Even though I liked it, I did not continue with the series that year because I already had too many other titles on my plate. I did pick up the series the following year - after I had culled some other titles that I was getting disinterested with - upon noticing an issue with a cover by Mike Kaluta. I continued with it until the demise of Andrew Bennett later in '83. I remember that I regretted that I hadn't continued with the title from my introduction the previous year. Anyways, I thought that it would be freaky if the one issue that I have from 1982 was the one issue that you are missing. Well, guess what! It is!! You can have it if you want it. That's amazingly generous of you but it's probably not worth the cost of mailing it out to the UK. I appreciate the thought though . Earl.

I see. Did you ever try out a subscription? I remember all those comical order coupons but more so in Marvel than DC.
As a young collector, I scoured the city looking for then current issues. If I think of all the legwork I put into building my collection particularly in the first couple of years, and all the corner stores and newsstands that I visited... my comics should be valued many times above guide!

Sending it by UPS would no doubt cost you an arm and a leg but sending it by lettermail wouldn't probably cost more than a few pounds. And weightwise/thickness I could even include one of the DC digests that you need (but not as a freebie ).
So does that mean that all this time you've been growing your collection strictly with UK sellers and dealers?
