Hi;

I've browsed these forums for a while and I'm slowly (oh so slowly) getting my collection entered onto this site (still not graded though, that'll come later).  The people on here seem to be incredibly knowledgable and all that good stuff so I decided to post my question here.

I'm just starting to try to find back issues to fill in gaps and get those sets completed and I've found a girl who is selling some good issues that I would like to get (as well as some good ones I wasn't really looking for, but hey, I'm not going to turn them down).  Problem is, no scans and I won't get to see the comics until I go to buy (though if they suck or are misrepresented I will walk away without qualm), so I'm hoping to get an idea of what to offer (as my grading skills are admittedly crap).

I've taken prices for several grades off the main site here, so that's taken care of for general information, but I really don't want to be paying guide price if I don't have to.  None of these will be for resale, all will go into my collection, so I'm not looking for a huge profit margin but simply a good deal.  Her response to my question about condition was "I can say none are torn or discolored!  Some have small spine cracks but it's minimal."

The issues I'm actually interesteed in are:

Silver Surfer (vol 1) #1, 12, 16

Fantastic Four #57, 75-77, 121, 155

Action Comics #324

Adventures of Jerry Lewis #75, 90, 105

Tales to Astonish #92

Marvel Two in One #1

Amazing Adventures #15

Adventure Comics #436, 442, 444, 445

Defenders #8, 11

Amazing Spider-man #315

Showcase #100

Detective Comics #449

Tomb of Dracula #50

And then there's a bunch of basic drek/quarter bin stuff that'll be thrown in (mostly crap 90s hologram cover stuff that she thought was going to be worth something).  She's asking $450 Canadian, but I definitely don't want to pay that unless the Surfer #1 is VF or better...but how low should I start?  I was thinking $250, maybe going to $300.  Any suggestions from the experts?  Anything I should keep an eye out on from people who have bought random collections before?

Thanks a bunch!

Cuevo.

I would suggest going with the VG+ price(10%) in mind, and if as you said SS#1 is VF or better increase your offer. I wouldn't recommend going overboard for SS#1 as I suspect it's value is at a peak in price, since it's not his 1st appearance. However, there will likely be a SS movie in the future(maybe by 2011), and if it's any good, the book will most likely double in value.

To tell you the truth, I wouldn't make any offer to her. You have no idea about the condition. Does she live near you? Go by, take a look, and either make an offer or tell her you need to think about it. If you make some sort of offer based on reasonable grades before seeing anything, it'll be tough to lower it. If you make an offer on lower grades it might be a turn off to her.

Alternatively, I might give her a range I'd be willing to pay, based on grade. Also, indicate that if any are too beat up you won't buy them and will change price accordingly.

I'd really try to get over there without making any offer though, you're flying totally blind. Have you seen some of the beaters on ebay that sellers say have "small spine damage?"

I agree that assuming something like VG+ sounds like a good idea.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the responses.  That's basically what I was thinking - don't offer anything until I see it and then offer in the VG range (assuming the comics are in at least a VG condition, I'm getting better at being unforgiving in my grading, but it's something I still have to work on...) and see if she'll take it.  $450 is waaaaay too much, unless the SS and FF are in truly well kept conditions.  The VG price according to this site is $220.32 for everything she has (drek included...) so I might even go in at $200 and tell her to keep all the 90s crap with shiny covers (though I'd put it much nicer, naturally) and negotiate from there.  If I can just walk out with the SS's and FF's it's all good, the others are merely bonus and nice to have in the collection (just cuz I'm finding myself wanting to be able to say "Hey, have you seen my Jerry Lewis comics?" and see the reactions from my non comic reading friends...).

I learned my lesson about agreeing to a price sight unseen after I paid $175 for an X-Factor (vol 1) run from 1-75...where #6 has the worst spine roll out of anything in my collection (ugh) and #24 would be lucky to get a Good grade.  I told her I'd have to see first and haven't mentioned any price or made an offer on my end yet.  She seemed more anxious to get them sold (she already sold off the 'dregs' but now needs the money more than the comics she had kept) so I'm hoping to play that to my advantage.

I'm meeting her next week, we're in the same city and all, so I'm not paying anything before seeing the comics, just looking to see how the pro's would approach it.

When it's all said and done (and assuming I do end up buying), I'll post some pics and scans so I can see if my grades match what everyone would grade as and I'll see if I overpaid or not.

Perfect man. Sounds like you're in a position to get a good deal on some comics you really want. What's better than that?
