Hello.  Thanks for responding to my post on the other thread about the old Dells.  I guess this topic will either die fast or (fingers crossed) live long and prosper.

I am currently up to 246 issues.  I am pretty picky as to condition, usually holding out for VF or higher, sometimes I settle for a nice eye appeal VG to Fine depending on the scarcity of the issue.

Why do you like these comics???  I'll tell you the reasons I do as there are several.

1.  For as scarce as they can be, they are very affordable when compared to super hero comics.

2.  NO ADS

3.  Vibrant colorful  front covers and 100% comics from inside front cover to outside back cover (most of the time).

4.  Wider than modern comics for more space (more bang for your buck).

5.  Not the mainstream.  I really enjoy collecting things that not everyone else already has.  While this reason alone would never get me into the hobby, it is one of the aspects that I do like about it.  Although, it also has it's drawbacks too as there are less people to enjoy the hobby with.

Other reasons??

I think it's amazing that from the late 30's to the mid 60's, they were able to put out a thick big comic with NO ads for a dime, when today you get a narrow thinner comic full of ads for 3 to 5 bucks.  That's about 30 years without a price increase.  Why they ever quit backing the US dollar is beyond me.  If we still had silver coins and silver certificates today, comics would probably only cost a quarter each.  Of course that wouldn't mean everyone would be able to afford to buy 10 copies of every comic.....but I think it would have kept a much better handle on inflation.

It's only money right???

I still suffer from a pretty powerful pro-superhero bias in my comic collecting. I'm working on it though! I've been dabbling in horror comics (House of Mystery, House of Secrets, and Witching Hour mostly), so maybe there's hope for me.

I will tell you this though: I often spend a little time when I go to the comic store poking around in amongst the Dell's. You're right, they've got great, bright, eye-catching covers. There also seem to be so many of them! I find that a bit daunting. It's like Classical music ... whenever I try to get into it, I get overwhelmed and just stick with what I know. The unknown frightens me.

Anyway, I hope the thread survives. I'd like to hear more about them, and see some too.

I just started to get into these comics the past year. I only have a handful but the main reason I like them or buy them is for the fabulous painted art of the front and back covers. I am looking at buying more of the giant Dells of characters I like, like Tom and Jerry and Walt Disney titles. I also would like higher grade books but haven't found many in the past few months that look good enough to buy when I have searched for them. Heritage has some nice graded ones the past week but the price of them went through the roof and are way out of my price range.
I also would like to see more of every ones collection scanned and posted here or in the other thread of their favorite ones.

Yeah, the covers are nice.  Back then, they didn't clutter the cover with UPC's and big logo's.  I do wish they had put the issue number on the cover of every issue though....having to pull the book out of the bag just see what number it is, is a pain in the ***.  Once I re-bag and board it (right after I get it home), I write the number in sharpie on the back of the board for easy reference.  I think all FOUR COLOR comics have the number on the cover, but none of the other Dell's do.

I have a bunch scanned on my thread in the "back issues" section.  I'll post more soon.  I am only 4 issues away from my Looney Tunes run that I have been working on for about 3 years now.  1-50.  After that, I have other titles to work on before I expand any further with Looney Tunes.  Besides, after the first 50, the rest are pretty easy to track down.

I think all FOUR COLOR comics have the number on the cover, but none of the other Dell's do.

Many of the early Dells had the issue number on the cover...Donald Duck, most of the Giants...and others. They started out with the right idea...just lost it along the way...
