KingOfRulers (4/10/2008) Is this just eBay.au, or all of eBay? I hadn't heard about this.
At the moment I guess only eBay.au but we had Bidders accounts being blocked (no matter how much a person bid) to everyone except the owner of the auction that happen here firstly then very shortly afterwards it was introduced on eBay.com.

For both parties in can suck....People who are new to eBay and online shopping in general mighten know about PayPal and there are people who refuse PayPal payments because of the charges put with it.
Nooow, from my understanding is...To accept CC payments the eBay seller has to have a Premium account...Not everyone will want to get a Premium account cause then you'll get charges on accepting the money.
eBay say something like you can't limit the way you take payments soo you couldn't say 'I don't take CC payments' because then you could get your account dobbed in for being unfair.
I do see the reason to make it safe but I think it'll also make many people think twice before shopping there.

I would guess this is only ebay.au.
I would think they would run into legal trouble trying this in the US. Requiring users to use a payment method that you own seems just a tad anti-competitive. Imagine if you could only buy gas at a gas station using their branded credit card. I would guess the other payment systems and the buyers and sellers would go nuts...

You may think so..But just wait and see....I think this type of thing would have problems in Australia as well..Then again I'll see how this all goes.

I don't think they'd have any problem instituting it here if they wanted to. There's really no utilitarian type of purpose to eBay, as such, they can do whatever they want with it -- it's not a 'necessary' service like gas, utilities, etc. People are free to use the service or not use it without having life-changing impact upon their lives. It's going to come down to whether they (eBay) think it makes economic sense for them.
Personally, I prefer PayPal even though I pay the service fee. I like to have my money in hand now. It's worth the 3% to me.

| I guess the only exception I'd have is on big ticket items (multi-thousand and up) where 3% makes a larger difference...

| I do not understand why people hate PayPal, other than they are owned by Ebay. Ebay should reduce listing fee commissions when people take payments from PayPal, otherwise, its like a tax on a tax. Other than that, PayPal is great. I have the PayPal Debit Mastercard, and use it on everything I buy, to which PayPal pays back 1%. So, I get a discount on everything. Small, yes, but it is something. Also, if you accept credit cards any other way than through PayPal, you have to pay for a merchant account, and transaction fees as well there.

| The change is for ebay.au only. That direct deposit scheme you guys have takes a lot of fees away from paypal. My understanding was that the ACCC was looking into it and ebay is petitioning them for legal immunity. What a sucky move. Typical ebay arrogance. Our way works here, so it'll work there, too.

Oooh, thank you for the additional info. It's true that DD does take a lot of fees away from eBay and same with Money Orders (not through PayPal).
I really hope they don't get legal immunity.
