I am interested in hearing stories of best comic finds...garage sales, antique shops, etc.

Here is one of my favorites:

About 1980, I was in my middle teens and I went with my parents to an out of the way antique store, and old converted Victorian mansion, the Orr House.  Among other things I found 7 Raggedy Ann and Andy comic books.....for $1 each!!!!  To me it was a fortune which I didnt have.  I talked my Mom into getting them for me, a fact which she never lets me forget.  Here they are.

Mama used to say to me...

"NOOOoooooooBABY ZERO!!!!!   KITTY DOESNT GO IN THE MICROWAVE!!!!"

For years my friend (whose parents were divorced) and I would spend the summer with his dad in Hawaii on the big island. There was a free paper with a free classified section that listed comics for sale. We called the ad and went to this guys house. The guy had been a huge collector in the 1970's and had large runs of tons of stuff that he priced by the 1976 Overstreet, last one he had bought (this was 1986). When we asked about golden age he pulled out the Larson Copies of Amazing Man #5 - #13, and some issues of Detective Comics (#'s 8, 10, 12, 18, 20) We buy everything for around $700.
While riding in an elevator at Comic-con a month later Geppi identifies the Detectives as the Mile High copies. Stephen Fischler (Metropolis) was also in the elevator and he buys the Detective #8 off us by the lobby for $1000. (alot in 1986)
One hell of a score in a place you'd never figure!

Those Raggedys are absolutely gorgeous......I'm impressed with the condition they are in.   A great find indeed!

I am quite jealous......

Not bad at all...

You got them at cover!

Very nice pick ups.  Especially the Charltons...look to be in nice shape.

Back in the late 1970s...before I had my first shop...I was managing the comicbook department of our local coinshop. The owner had a unique combination of coin & stamp shop/comicbooks/and used romance paperbacks...anyhow, I was kind of managing the store and had convinced him to carry comics. A gentleman from in one day and asked us if we were interested in really old comics. Seemed he's worked in a cigar/newstand shop in the late 1940s/early 1950s...and every night he'd bring a couple of comics home for his son. After his son had read them they put them in a grocery bag and put them up in the closet.

So now it's about 1975...and he brings in 8-10 grocery bags each filled with 20-30 beautiful condition comicbooks...

Some of the pieces that come out of the collection were:

Modern Comics #102

Namora #1

Venus #1

Real Fact #5

Tomahawk #2

Two of the books in the collection were in VG...the rest ranged from F+ to VF/NM...

Very nice pickup.

The colors look good, gloss good, too?

One of the things I like about some of those older comics is that they actually have complete jokes on the cover.
