I've never picked up any OA work before..Been tempted to especially lithographs but never taken the that step.

How much have you dropped on a single piece and was it worth it?

I just picked up my first OA piece about 2 weeks ago.  Hellblazer #47 pg 23.  Only spent $40 on it.  Definitely worth it for me.

I mock you with my monkey pants! (Oz, "What's my line?" part 2)

Just over 20 years ago, I also started off collecting prints, portfolios and lithos but eventually realised that owning the original (which was one of one and not one of 1000 or whatever the edition number) wasn't that much more of an expense and it was an appreciating asset!

To date, I've never spent more than $500.00 on a single piece of original comic art and my collection which includes some delightful work by Adam Hughes, Bryan Hitch, Stuart Immonen, Ashley Wood etc. can be viewed here - http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryDetail.asp?GCat=111

That said, given the way prices are escalating rapidly, I may eventually break the $500.00 "barrier" (once the Aussie dollar improves!).  Best,

Royd

Well, I have spent about $3k as my max... but that didn't happen overnight. I started collecting a few smaller pieces, then decided I'd rather have art than my most valuable comics and I sold those for money to use towards more art. Over time I collected more art until I could sell some of that to buy more expensive pieces. So I keep buying art, but not necessarily spending a ton more as I do some of it through trades and selling other pieces to raise money. I definitely enjoy it, but it does of course require a bit of discretionary spending as it's not a particulalrly cheap hobby, especially if you are into covers and paintings.

My most expensive are the Joe Jusko Tomb Raider cover and the Jason Palmer painting.

I have about 20 or so Jim Balent Catwoman pages that I've spent anywhere from $50 to $200 each on. I think. It's been a long time since he's done Catwoman so I don't recall all of the details off hand. I should have bought more at the time but OTOH I only bought the pieces that I thought were the coolest.

I have the first story and the cover to the Archie "Love Showdown" from several years ago. It ran in four issues, ten pages per issue I believe. That was the story the reintroduced Cheryl Blossom to the Archie-verse. Paid $100 for the cover but only $5 each for the story pages.

I also own an original (unpublished) Linsner Dawn painting. Eva has told me that it is probably one of the most detailed pieces he's actually sold (Linsner doesn't sell to much of his published, i.e. detailed, work). I bought that about ten years ago and I don't like to think about how much I paid for it.

My max is $600 for a splash Batman page by Seth Fisher. Legends of Dark Knight 192 pg3. It's a lot of money but Batman is my fav, Seth Fisher only did a few comics before he died at 32. His work remind me Geoff Darrow, and it's very original, unfortunally he died too young. After a lot of time looking for his art I contacted Seth's mother directly and after a tough negotiation she agreed to sell me the page. I recently contacted her again to buy another page but she does not sell his son's art anymore. You can see some of Seth Fisher art here:  http://www.floweringnose.com/
