Here's an alternate Alex Ross cover: 
I'm curious where you found your information regardng this being an possible cover for X-men #500. This image was created years ago by Ross and was featured in an old Wizard Magazine from a few years back. So unless Ross created it years ago, and is now trying to use it as a cover image for X-men 500, I'm thinking this was never a design possiblity for X-men #500.
