Well, I think you need to rescind the negative feedback. After all, in the long run, you got what you wanted and weren't financially harmed. But keep in mind...this is exactly how sellers like this keep their longevity. They bend over backwards when they get "caught" just to save their own skin.

Obviously, I have a pre-formed opinion of these types of sellers (but I got this opinion the hard way---by getting burned) and others may disagree. My view is this: as a buyer, I need to protect my own interests (nobody else will do it) and I'd rather err on the side of being a bit harsh on a seller than losing my hard earned cash. Having said that, I still believe that removing the negative feedback is the right thing to do. You have to deal with these things on a case by case basis.

Thanks Borgo,

I take your point. I just do not understand how my efforts to contact him could have failed. I mean...why would he purposefully ignore me knowing that I would hit him with a negative feedback, and then turn around and give me a book with a value even higher than the one I purchased for free? I will rescind the negative; I think his efforts merit that and...I like to think that I am not a jerk (do not ask my wife though ). I am happy that this ended well for everyone involved. I thank you all for your advice and support. You all are a great group of people.

Hey Tex. Congrats on getting what you deserved from this seller. It sounds like rescinding the negative is the right thing to do under these circumstances (as you mentioned...if not for the seller than for yourself).
Is it possible to leave different feedback once a negative has been removed? If so, perhaps leaving a positive (or even a neutral) stating, for example:
"Difficult Transaction but end result was positive"
or something to that effect.

Very good none-the-less.

Well DeadOne,

Here's the rub. I tried to fix it but I could not. Here's an exerpt from the e-mail message sent to me from the representative:

Thank you for writing eBay in regard to the negative feedback you have
left for item number 360081006171.

I appreciate your request to rescind the feedback for the seller.
However, members can't edit or remove feedback comments once they've
been posted.

I've reviewed the feedback and I see that it doesn't meet our criteria
for removal. We'll remove feedback only if it's abusive or meets
specific requirements of our removal policy.

I also see that you left a follow-up comment. This way, other members
will be able to know exactly what took place. END EXCERPT

If you have any ideas that may help me to help the seller I would appreciate them. The seller did right by me, and I feel the need to do right by him. Thanks DeadOne.

Oh well...what's done is done. It all worked out well for you and the seller's feedback rating is still at 99% (and apparently another buyer had the same communication difficulties that dodofive claims to have had with you) so no real harm done by leaving the negative. It was left by you in good faith and accurately represented the transaction when left (the purpose for feedback in the first place).

Maybe email the response sent to you by the ebay representative to dodofive showing your good intent. Maybe this is one instance where it really is the thought that counts.
Of course, he probably won't receive the email anyway

Thanks DeadOne,

I'll forward the message to him. I now have his personal e-mail address which he answers pretty regularly. It's sending messages through the "contact seller" link on ebay that's the problem.
