just wondering Buffyfan, when looking for your Giant-Size Marvels collection what is the lowest grade you will buy when slabbed ? I always feel that an 8.5 is my lowest allowable and if its above 9.4 I am pretty happy with a find like that. I feel anywhere around a 9.0 is good anything higher is a treasure. I just started looking for cgc giant-size books... I have many reader copies of most titles but the past year or so have been trying to replace most in high grades.

Actually, I don't have much interest in slabbing my Giant-Size Marvels. Even my GS X-Men #1 is raw.

The only reason I have magazines graded is I feel they are much more prone to damage due to the size and so many have dark covers that creases look horrible on them.

Certain golden age books I buy slabbed due to many reasons... price, high (or top) census issue, or for the restoration check.

All of my GS books are raw and I buy them in VF or better. Considering that probably 75% of the people selling them do not know how to correctly grade them (because they are squarebound and subject to lots of production defects) I generally find good deals on them.

There's not many left that I need and I do upgrade occassionally even at times finding one that I think is nicer than the copy I have and then it turns out that it isn't. Those usually get resold pretty quickly as like I said, I find good deals on them due to incorrect grading so I generally always make my money back. I say "generally" because sometimes I'll make a couple dollars more than I spent.

I'm not much of a fan of slabbing bronze age books no matter what it is. Why? Because there's a butt load of them out there! The only bronze I can remember having graded was a Hulk 181 that I got out of a group of 54 books that I paid about $300 for. The 181 came back 9.2 and was sold in under 4 days.

This is good to know. I have been trying the same thing with conditions to buy in vf or better and feel that some but not most know how to grade these and at times I am not to sure if I am a great grader of Giant-Size books. I have bought a few Giant-size books slabbed for two reasons. One to see what "they" consider a grade to look like and to help myself grade my own books.
I have some great looking books of these and the only thing that bothers me with them is part of my collection has grease pencil dates on them in the upper corner of the books that I bought 15 from one seller. I consider them near mint but with the pencil I am not sure.
In the above quote you mentioned squarebound and this is the reason I like collecting them in the highest grade I can find. I figure there has to be less of these over all and a good set to collect for that reason. 2/3rds of the books I buy of Giant-Size as you stated do end up in a lower grade than the seller said they would be, a problem with buying through ebay instead of buying in person at a store.
As for your comments on the magazines I can see why slabbing is a good idea considering the problems you pointed out.
Thanks for your answer, I feel better in what I have been trying to do.

I considered for a time to try and put together a complete run of all Marvel bronze age squarebounds. This would include King Size and Special edition Marvels like Chamber of Darkness not to mention titles like Fear.

Production defects on them include things like bindery tears, rumpled spines and glue sticking out in weird places. The biggest thing to remember with them is that a long as there are no tears, corner creases or heavy creases on the spine you're probably good to go on any of them.

True enough what you said about eBay sellers but it doesn't matter what book it is it will usually be overgraded on eBay. Definitely stick to buying them in person and if you happen to find multiple copies of Kid Colt #1 sell me one!

That book is most definitely the most difficult to find out of any of them. I see #2's everywhere but the #1 in VF or better is a tough tough book. I'd have to say that the Spider-man #1 is the second hardest to find mainly because they just don't come up for sale too often in grade and at an affordable price unlike the Spider-man #4 which is the 3rd appearance of the Punisher which I find for sale ALL the time.

HA! Yes Kid Colt#1 is a bear to find and when I see it I get out bid on it due to lack of funds. I think the 4th spidy comes up because folks want to make money off it because of the Punisher app. . I have most issues of G.S. with multiple issues of them in all different grades. I first bought any and all issues to be found, read most and am now getting in the mood of just finding vf or better grades this past year. The points you made of the bindery of G.S. books is right on in my experience with them. Poor cutting, glue, placement of staples and creases are what makes these fun to try to collect in such grades. Kid Colt I have the least of.

I know it's not golden age but I've been looking for a nice copy of this book for awhile and because it's in a PGX slab I got it for less than half of what a CGC equivalent would have sold for.

I have a hard time finding that one in high quality too. Nice copy.
