I know this is a little latein the game, seein as how you posted this in March of '08, but I've got a question. I've got a few of the issues you describe. I bought them from someone else second-hand. I didn't even collect comics when they originally came out, so I'm not sure on the printing editions....

I have a Batman #397. It doesn't completely match any of your edition descriptions. In the box for the UPC symbol, it actually has a UPC symbol. 'Mazing man ad on the inside cover, M&M's on the back. Here's a scan:

Can you tell me what edition this is? Thanks for the help.

Thanks for asking.

During that time, comics were available in newsstand(think your 7-11 or grocery store) and had a bar code. They were also available through specialty comic shops with pictures or words in the bar code box. The comic you have is the newsstand version of the book which many collectors also seek out in addition to the direct editions!

Hope this helps!

Thanks Mark. I have a few news stand editions apparently. Are they usually worth the same as the direct editions of the same condition?

Great question.

For the most part, newsstands issues are worth the same as direct as a general rule of thumb. However, there are exceptions. In 1990, Todd McFarlane was the writer and artist of the SPIDER-MAN book. There were multiple covers. Black, Green, Gold, Platinum, bagged. The variant craze took hold. BUT, the most sought after book, is the Gold UPC newsstand version out of all of those. So, in a print run of over 425,000 books, the newsstand book is the most sought after,

Look at the latest Daredevil run. Many of these issues had a newsstand variant with no issue number on it. Because of that, they are sought after as a variant.

For the most part, newsstand and directs are interchangeable. Different routes to market, one to booksellers and newsstands, the other to specialty stores. Unless their is a price difference which some do have, the value is the same. Moral here is to get the cleanest copy you can get regardless of the UPC!

Hope this helps!
