I'm going to my folks' house today to get my old comics out of their attic. I'm thinking of selling a bunch of them on eBay in an effort to raise loot for a few of the earlier Flash comics that I don't have. We have a great full-service mail room in my office so shipping should be easy.

I would love to hear from anyone with any experience selling on eBay. How do you determine starting price? What do you do about grading? Sell in batches or individually? Are there options for the length of a listing? Any nice moves I can pull to reduce eBay fees? How do you set shipping charges? Is it just plain lame to buffer the shipping charge with a little "handling" fee, for stuff like the cost of bags/boards, time I spend, etc.? Also, at this point I truly don't know how much shipping costs, what options are available, does eBay help with that stuff?

Thanks for any assistance. I'd like to be one of the good sellers on eBay, not one of the jerks.

O, one more thing. Since I'm new to this side of the transaction, I'm pretty worried about grading. I'd like to offer a return policy in case the buyer thinks I goofed on the grade. Does it sound reasonable to offer a refund for returns in the same condition, but minus the shipping costs? I've seen that offer around and it sounds fair to me.

Let me address your last question first, since it is the most important. Make CERTAIN you know how to grade and grade accurately! You HAVE to be sure of a comic's grade or you will either 1) cheat yourself or 2) piss off a customer. It's difficult to be impartial with your cherished childhood comics collection, but you have to face stark reality, not wishful thinking or seeing them through rose colored glasses.

So my advice is to set aside a large chunk of time, take a big pile of comics and carefully examine each book and practice, practice, practice your grading until you are reasonably confident that you have perfected it. One that is done, assign a grade to each of your books. It is only when you actually have a qualitative and quantitative idea of what you possess, that you are ready to list on eBay. Of course, there are untold numbers of people out there that just list any old thing any way they please, and, in fact, they are probably the majority, You don't want to be one of them.

One last thing about the refund policy. DO NOT use it as a "crutch" or an "out" to make up for over-grading! Many, many sellers out there PURPOSELY over-grade their books and use their refund policy to get them off the hook for the relatively small percentage of folks who take advantage of the return policy. If you know how to grade, refunds will be miniscule! But if you do refund, re-imburse the customer's return shipping as well. By offering a refund you are implicitly admitting some fault in the process, so don't penalize the customer. Just take note of his/her name so that they don't repeatedly take advantage.

Test your own grading skills by selecting say three books of varying conditions and give each of them what you think is a fair grade. Make qualty scans of the same books and post them in the Comic Grading forum and see how your grading stands up to forum members comments.

What are yu looking at selling off. .... from which era I mean.

I agree. You need to know how to grade before you sell on eBay.

Youe auction format should depend on how valuable your books are. The less valuable, the more books to one auction you should have. If it is an expensive book, it can have its own auction listing. If you have any books of significant value up for auction you will need front and back cover scans. For many later in the run books you should group them together. I would round up to the next dollar on the shipping costs. If it tends to cost you $6 to ship something, charge $7. If you have a group of books that is a large lot (20-50 books), just flat rate ship it. Charge $10 and use the USPS flat rate box. Start listings off at 99 cents. Only have them end Sunday thru Thursday between 8 and 11 est.

KoR, I was with you until you mentioned this. Why do you only have your auctions ending Sunday thru Thursday? I thought ending on Friday and Saturday was a good thing for people who find that the best time to browse eBay is on the weekends. Do you find that you actually get top dollar for auctions ending on a Tuesday or Wednesday? It doesn't seem to make sense to me. But I know you've been around the block, so I respect your opinion.

Give a grading estimate but have very big scans of both the front and rear covers. Let the buyer grade it themselves and feel free to put this in the auction.

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing but maybe he meant to say end Thurs - Sun.  I personally like to have most of auctions end on Sunday night, well my comic auctions that is.  The majority of the stuff I sell on ebay I have ending throughout the week around 9pm, I use the Buy It Now option so it doesnt really matter when they end.

Generally speaking, I think that most people are not on their computers on Friday and Saturday nights. I find that to be the worst time to list books. We've had threads on this on the CGC boards and while people have different ideas about the BEST days, most people agree that Friday and Saturday are the worst.
