Most people that come into contact with me are taken aback that I collect comics with the typical thinking they are only for kids and nerds which doesn't fit my weightlifter/bodybuilder image. My comic collecting comes up very rarely in conversation, most only hear about it through my best friend.

Girls I have dated looked at my hobby strangely, but than for whatever reason seem to get as much enjoyment as I do when I add something I have been wanting for a while into my collection, maybe it's the excited vibe I give off. I've been fortunate to NEVER have been expected to trim down my collection, confine it to one space in the house or any other request/demand.

I only have 2 friends who have any kind of collection at all, my best friend of 30+ years, but his collection is pretty much all the same books he had as a kid/teenager and another friend who only has about 2 short boxes full of books and collects very sporadically as his wife looks at comic collecting with disdain.

It's always interesting myself to see the reaction when people come over for the first time and are amazed at the amount of comics, statues and toys I have with obviously my toys taking up quite a bit of room. I usually find myself explaining a bit, than quickly moving onto something else as they never seem to quite get it and look at me like they are on an episode of Candid Camera, a lot of people say I have an air of intimidation about me so it's strange to see me surrounded by toys.

Comics are a hobby that I really have no one to share my interest with other than my girlfriend, but her interest is casual. This board is the only release I have to speak of anything comic related.

Well I am fortunate in the fact that 75% of my friends are geeks by nature (They all work in the video game, Visual fx or 2D animation industry) so I get a lot of support. Even the people who don't seem to understand it think that its cool. My girlfriend is incredibly awesome about it and generally buys me nice silver age Spideys for birthdays and christmas. I actually got her Fantastic Four #48 as a present once because shes a big Galactus/Silver surfer fan. There really aren't any people I know that think its just plain stupid. My boss gave ASM #9(fine+) and #64 (NM) as a bonus one year and also tricked my office out by getting one of our painters to do a Spidey mural on my wall. I do see a lot of jaws hit the floor when people find out how much I have spent on some comics. One of my buddies gives me a hard time about it, but I brought him to a comic convention in may and he was getting right into it, helping me track down some issues I needed and also helping me haggle. Then he got his picture taken with the flash and wonder woman.

Good topic.

Someone: "So I hear you collect Spider-Man comics."
Me: "Yep."
Someone: "Well I happen to have Amazing Spider-Man #92"
Me: "I have #1"
Someone: ".......oh."

It's those little victories that make life worth living.

Friends don't really care if I collect comics or not. I do remember in High School people started to learn that I collected/read comics so when it was my birthday I'd get a comic book of some sort as a present. Even some friends would just give me their comics they didn't want anymore which I thought was really cool.

One thing people know about me very early is my love of cartoons and comics...If that scares them off then that's their problem. I don't really talk much about comics because my friends don't share the same interest SO that is why this forum is great.

Since starting in my new job everyone loves cartoons and almost certainly have an interest in comics in general even if they don't collect them. So being in a work environment that treasures these types of things makes me really happy. There is one person who I talk comics with and I've lent them a graphic novel in return he lent me a big book about animation.

My family think my collection is kinda crazy but they have never said it was a bad thing...And sometimes my parents like to look through my comics because it reminds them of their childhood. My grandmother would buy me comics when she'd buy books and still continues to do so.

Dude you got a cool boss. My boss is my girlfriend's dad which is cool but he never gave me a couple nice comics for a bonus. You need to keep that job for a long time.
