That original art is getting ridiculously expensive?

I collect mainly Batman related art, and there are pieces done by "average Joe" artists that originally went for $30-$50 are now going for $90-$125???? These pieces will BARELY have Batman on them or even a supporting character like Robin or Nightwing.

I can understand a Bernie Wrightson page from "Batman: The Cult" going for hundreds of dollars, but now there are pages with nothing more than random skyline shots of Gotham city with a head-shot of Alfred in the last panel going for over $80.

WTF?

Another thing I've noticed... Where is all the original Batgirl comic art? I've been looking for a Barbara Gordon Batgirl page (either from Batman Family or a Detective Comics back-up) for YEARS now and I have seen a single page.

Every time I do a search for "batgirl", regardless of the site being searched, it is either a page from the modern Batgirl series (again, most ridiculously priced) or just some random artists convention sketch.

Again, WTF?

Is art becoming scarce? Do dealers have a large overhead of stock they can't unload? Or is the market now being driven by speculators?

My LCS owner went to the NYCC and he saw a page from Watchmen. The page had six panels, five of which was showing the NY skyline, and the last panel had Ozymandias out of costume talking to his secretary.

The price....?

$8,000.00

Last week a page from Watchmen featuring Dr Manhattan on Mars was selling for $20000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, pages featuring Batman are very expensive right now, no matter who drew it.

Murray, time for you to start collecting Robin ONLY pages!

It's not only Bats pages that have gone up...it's almost across the board.

Whenever you have a collectors that only buy one character, there's bound to be price jumps. Such as Ms. Marvel...I know there are about 3-4 die-hard MM collectors on CAF at this moment...and as for Legion Of Super-Heroes...at least 10-15+ die-hards!!! I'd rather stay away from that shark frenzy.

That's why I collect a wide variety of series/characters/themes...makes for less competition...sometimes

It's a wide open market...

People are finally starting to realize that each page of art is a "one-of-a-kind"...and those with the finances don't care what it costs to get it.

Art is going up and up and up and I don't see a ceiling for some pieces, like Watchmen. People have those pages in their collections and know they're very rare and won't let them go. If you want one, you have to pay the price.

I can remember when Jack Kirby pages were selling for $175-$250 each and now those pages are $2500 each in a lot of cases.

I was buying Infantino Marvel pages for under $100 and now they're double that in all cases.

The more people enter the hobby, the higher prices are going to go because there will be more money and a finite number of pages and covers.
