I recently came across these books and can't seem to find much information on them. The Underground USA book was published in 1986 in France and has chapters on Greg Irons, Jaxon And Texas, The Cards of R. Crumb, The Art of Spiegelman, Trina and The Women and other chapters, with a nice bibliography and index. Illos. are in English and text is in French. A book that makes me wish I spoke French. The Horrific Romances is a nicely produced DIY book from a guy named Mike Matthews, who I believe is deceased, is dated 1984, and is a first edition of 971 stated copies, hand-cut and assembled by Matthews. Covers are full color heavy stock and guts are glossy black and white. Anyone know these books? I'm attaching some scans for the first time on this message board so please bear with me if snafus occur.

Oh yeah, the isbn for UG USA is 2-904846-28-X, and inside it says a 2nd volume was in preparation. Anyone know if it ever came out?

I assume this Mike Matthews is the same guy that did AS-FIX-E-8 with Lydia Lunch?

British undergrounds are my specialty, so you came to the right place.

Horrific Romance Comix was a collection of then unpublished work by the late, great, British comix artist Mike Matthews, who died in a tragic drowning accident in the early '90s. Just as the indicia states, it was a self-published effort, dating 1984, that was assembled by hand, by the artist, and limited to 971 copies. A cache of them was distributed by Last Gasp, in the mid-'80s, some of which still bear the price sticker to prove it. I've seen them sell for as little as $5 (due, in large part, to poor documentation) and as much as $50. I always grab them when I can.

It's an important book, to be sure, and one that is likely to be quite sought after as time sheds a brighter light onto the British underground.

Don't let go of it too easily, if at all.

Thanks Rev, for the Last Gasp connection, as it explains why copies might be prone to turning up in the Bay Area, though I've not seen another copy and had forgotten I had this one until I was doing a little cleaning and it reared it's "Horrific" head. Couldn't figure out how a limited print, obscure title got all the way over here. And you also reminded me of a book titled Nasty Tales by a bloke named Huxley, which covers the UK UG scene. It was sitting on my book shelf covered over with other titles, and lo and behold when I pulled it out, there was Horrific right on the cover, and inside was the story of it's production straight from Mr. Matthews mouth. I'd totally forgotten about this book, and now it looks as though it's time for a refresher!

Rory Hayes' brother did a new kid's book...and I did a new kid's book. Both are shown here http://toon-books.com

Tom Riccio's new book BUSTED just came out, and is available on Amazon. (not to be confused with another book called BUSTED, which is about pot laws that Crumb did the illustrations for). In Riccio's BUSTED, Chapter l9 is all about a project John Pound, Tom Bunk, Strephon Taylor and I did with Riccio about ten years ago. The bulk of the book is about how he escaped from prison, won the lottery, and got involved with Anna Nicole Smith and O.J., though. This all has nothing to do with underground comix... But the Silly CDs project that I did with Riccio was plenty fun. You can buy a remaindered case of Silly CDs on ebay for a few bucks. The whole thing was more or less a financial disaster. But in the end, it all worked out. The book is an interesting read.

Are you referring to the book "Pot Shots" with the Crumb illos. or did he also do another one, as well?
