Like many of you before me, I too once had a topic started about my bargain bin purchases. That topic has come and gone. This is now the home for such said buys.
For starters..... I took a break from work last night and headed to my LCS. I haven't really been there some time. But I met one of the guys that works there one night at the local Wal-Mart. Him and I are pretty good friends/mates/what-have-you. He told me that the store just recently started buying and selling back issues again. They haven't been doing this since I can't remember when. So I decided to go and check it out.
I must say, I was pretty disappointed with there current selection of back issues. They only had about a short box and a half of inventory to browse through. However, the prices were pretty good. They were selling stuff for either $1 or $5. Nothing higher than that. Nothing lower either. Didn't really find anything that struck my fancy. I opted for some of their newer bargain books instead.
They usually have a pretty good selection of their newer stuff on sale for $1/each. They are all in pretty good condition. Mainly everything is in VF/NM, and they are all bagged/boarded. Even though they normally sell them for $1/each, they were having a sale on these too. They were down to $.50/each. Not much to rummage through here either. There were only a couple of long boxes left, and nothing really mainstream. I still went ahead and pick up a few things. I mean......they were only $.50/each, and I felt like I was doing my part to help the cause.
This is what I got:
Darkminds Vol. 1 #1/2
Darkminds Vol. 1 #4
Darkminds Vol. 2 #5
Darkminds Vol. 2 #7
Darkminds: Macropolis Vol. 1 #3 (Variant White Cover Edition. This is not listed in the database anywhere. I will post a scan later today.)
Darkminds: Macropolis Vol. 2 #1
Darkminds: Macropolis Vol. 2 #2
Darkminds: Macropolis Vol. 2 #3
Darkminds - Collected #2
Darkminds - Collected #3
Warlands #1/2 (Wizard Magazine Limited Edition w/Certificate of Authenticity)
Also picked up a couple of the Top Shelf 2008 Seasonal Samplers on my way out the door.
All in all....not too bad for only paying $5.89 for the whole lot.

Here is the scan that I was talking about:

I also added this to the Missing Issues Forum.

Well......I decided to take that leap and check out Half Price Books. The nearest one is almost an hour and a half away from me (one way). I loaded the car full with overstock from the publishing company I work for and headed out. The selection of comic books/graphic novels consisted of mainly newer books, but it was still fairly nice. Anyone looking for some Ultimate Spider-Man or Ultimate X-Men issues to fill their run?
They had a few older issues mixed in along with the moderns. But just a few. They also had a pretty decent selection of bargain bin books. These books were priced mainly for $.50 and $.25 each. Within these boxes, you could almost find yourself a complete run of either 52 or Countdown. They also had a locked case alongside the rest of the books that was full of mainly Silver Age Amazing Spider-Man and Uncanny X-Men. Nothing in that case was more than $15/each. Then they had a stand-up glass case by the cash register that contained a couple more Amazing Spider-Man issues. Those issue numbers were #200 priced at $40 and #238 priced at $100.
From my experience, I can see why this would be a place that you would need to check back very often with. There were a lot of people coming and going. Product was constantly coming and going the whole time I was in there. I can't even begin to imagine what might have came in while I was in there looking.
All-in-all in was a pretty decent trip for me. The money I got for my trade-ins pretty much covered the cost of my gas to get up there and back, the items that I purchased while I was there, and I even had a bit left over to spare.
I'm going to try and make it up there again this weekend. We'll just have to see how the weekend plays out though.
This is a list of what I picked up: (The price in bold is what I paid.)
Superman For All Seasons: Book One $2.50
Superman Vol. 2 #196 $.50
Superman Vol. 2 #197 $.50
The Defenders #151 $.25
Batman #492 $.25
Detective Comics #659 $.25
Darkminds Vol. 1 #3 (Purple Cover) $.25
Darkminds Vol. 2 #6 $.25
Fables #44 $.50
Ex Machina #5 $.50
Ex Machina #12 $.50
Ex Machina #13 $.50
Fantastic Four #185 $4.00
Fantastic Four #189 $4.00
Fantastic Four #248 $3.00
Transformers: Matrix Quest HC $3.00 ($24.99 Cover Price)
I'll have to add some pictures later. I don't have my camera on me at the moment, and my scanner at work has some yellow lines running through the bottom half of it.

Cool thread man (I was thinking of starting one myself). You narrate a good story also. Keep it up.

Just got back from my latest trip to Half Price Books. I decided to load up the car full of books and head up to Greenwood to give it another try. This is my second trip in two straight weeks. I'm still trying to figure out what they base their offers one. I believe that I took more books this time than I did during my last trip. However, they only offered me a 1/3 of what I was offered last week. The only thing that really made the trip worthwhile was the fact that I also took up a box of records that I had laying around. The box was full of records that I figured wouldn't be worth my time trying to sell individually. I had already taken out the good stuff such as The Beatles, The Who, The Doors, etc. I planning on selling these on Ebay and hoping for some good bidders. But anyway......I'm thinking about calling Half Price Books tomorrow during work to see if they might tell me what they base their offers on. Maybe I'll be able to find some books to take back up there for a maximum offer?
Even though I wasn't offered as much this time as i was last, I think I still had a pretty eventful time. My g/f, my son, and I all seemed to have a good time. I picked up a pretty decent stack of discount comic books and picked up another copy of Transformers: Matrix Quest HC for my son. My g/f didn't seem to want anything this week.
Funny observation of the week: I noticed that most of the same people that were there last week looking through the comics, where there again this week doing the same thing. We must not have anything else to do with our time on Sundays.
Funny quote of the week (this is what my g/f said when we walked into the pet store that's right next door to Half Price Books): It smells like a pet store in here.
*shakes head* LOL
Here is the list of books that I picked up and the price I paid for each:
Showcase 93 #7 $.25
The Punisher: War Zone #14 $.25
Pakkins' Land #5 $.25
Pakkins' Land: Quest For Kings #1 $.25
Pakkins' Land: Quest For Kings #4 $.25
Pakkins' Land: Quest For Kings #5 $.25
Hawkworld #1 $.25
Hawkworld #3 $.25
Dick Tracy, Book #2 $.25
100 Bullets #21 $.50
100 Bullets #28 $.50
Pirates Vs. Ninjas II #1A $.50
Pirates Vs. Ninjas II #5 $.50
The Battle For Bludhaven #6 $.50
JSA #75 $.50
JSA #76 $.50
Havok & Wolverine: Meltdown #1 $.50
Havok & Wolverine: Meltdown #2 $.50
Transformers: Matrix Quest HC $3.00 ($24.99 Cover Price)
Picked all of them up for $10.43.
