In another post I stated that I was unhappy with the direction that Marvel has been going.  Most agreed with me to say that the quality of the books has been down for awhile.  That is not to say that there aren't some good books out there, but in general.  A interesting thing came out of that thread is that while most feel that way about Marvel there is also that same sentiment about DC.
After reading some of the comments by Chuck Dixon after leaving DC it begs to question:  Has DC and Marvel forgotten that foremost they make comics?  Have they forgotten about what has gotten them where they are today?  With all the millions of dollars that they are making off the movies and toys and everything else have they forgotten?  I honestly dont know so I'm gonna ask..... would the big two still be in the black if it weren't for "the everything else", because I don't know how they are surviving otherwise.
Do the big two need to get back to thiers roots to save themselves?  Comments.....

i dont know marvel very well, so I can not say if their comics are better or worst than before. I know DC better, and I have to say I am very happy with the main DC title right now, and in general with the direction DC took starting with Identity Crisis. Batman, Detective and even Action and Superman are pretty good read. I dont read Green Lantern but everybody hail Johns writing. All Star Batman and Superman are both great read.

Now, I am sure both companies made the money not without comic books. Take MArvel, the Spiderman franchise alone is enough to keep a big company alive for years.

I'm also happy with the direction DC is taking and the quality of all their top major titles. I don't really have any thing to complain about when it comes to DC...

They're handling continuity well in each book, they have GREAT storylines going in all their top tier books.

Only bad thing is the prices. But feh..whats new. And of course they still put out some pretty bad books, and some mini's that let down...but as long as they continue focusing on the quality of their major books, i could care less.

I can't really make any interesting comments as I buy all my curent books in TPB format and usually wait for a few volumes to reach the presses before I start buying.  However, I have found myself enjoying and buying more DC than ever before.  They seem to focus on the comics as the end product, where Marvel keeps shetting on themselves trying to prep all their big books for movie and tv results, the comics kind of seem like a means to a different end result for Marvel.  The question of if the companies didnt have the movie and animation side of the buisness to fall back on, can't really be debated much because you know a heck of a lot of things would be very different for both companies, so much so it's really hard to speculate.

I don't think they've forgotten, just that it's not the part of their business that is the most profitable. I'm pretty sure I've read somewhere that their licences and movie deals rake in a lot more $$$ than comic sales. So obviously the suits that govern are more concerned with the most profitable areas.
