I think it's a deficiency in my scanner, it's very old and probably could use an adjustment, because I just pulled the book out and looked at it under light and it's pretty white, not dingy as it appears in the scan. Oh well, I use it mostly to put books on Abe with, and not really for evaluating comics. Trust me, that Swamp Thing looks almost as new when seen in person.

Well if it's not really dirty then I think I'd give it an 8.5.

I can't figure out how to adjust my scanner's hue, tint, brightness, etc...as I'm noticing whites all come out 'un-white', so I guess my scans will have to be put on hold until I can figure it out or get a new one. Thanks for pointing this out.....of course maybe I just need to wipe down the glass as it's been a few years since it's been used and cleaned.....

Man! A lot of harsh grades coming from "the citizens". I only see a few defects (that I can see from the scans). You've got a small chip out of the top-right corner on the front cover, a couple of small spine creases, and a couple of creases on the back cover. I would give it an 8.0. Unless the back cover is really dirty and it's not from your scanner. If that's the case, I would then give it a 7.0.

Whatever the grade, really nice looking book.

Funny thing is that point on the cover that looks like a chip is a discoloration and not a chip. This is why this whole grading of scans is not quite the panacea it would appear to be. I showed this comic to 2 dealers and both graded it 8.5 - 9 under regular light and observation. Nice white pages and sharp corners, etc. The scan seems to harshen the book, at least in this case. While I'm holding onto it for the nonce, I've been offered top dollar by both people I showed it to, and somewhere I have a House of Secrets #92 that looks even better, but it's in one of many boxes stashed away in my closet that will take some time to figure out and reach, as well as an even better copy of ST #1. That scan was of my lesser copy I was thinking of parting with. I just wanted to check out this whole scan and grade routine. It's an interesting but flawed science to be sure, thus far. Thanks for the input though, folks!
