| I've been collecting comics for 25 years approx...and I go back and forth between super hero comics and old four color kinds of comics and there is something I always find amazing about it. If you have money, you can put together a run of ASM 1-500 in probably a week via ebay, or a day via any comic show of decent size. The only thing that makes your run different from someone elses is condition of each book. Actually, if Bill Gates wanted to, he could probably put 100 runs of ASM together in a couple of months via ebay as all issues are always available. The only thing stopping anyone from completing this run is money. But if you want a run of Four Color 1-500, in any condition, you couldn't do it in a year on a bet in my opinion. You would have to be pretty resourseful to pull it off especially if you sit at home and do the buying via ebay. And yes...it would also cost a pretty penny to collect all of these.....but probably less than ASM and that is where demand comes into play. A run of either is impressive but I think the only reason a run of ASM is impressive, is because of the value of them....not because you actually found them all. How many people actually have a full run of Four Color??? 1-1200+ I'd sure be impressed to see that because money is only ONE of a few factors involved in putting that together. Time and effort are the other 2 biggies.

The value of any books are a combination of scarcity and demand. I don't think there are probably more than 2 or 3 completed FC runs in existence. I wouldn't be suprised if there were not any complete runs. But the subject is pretty easy. It's all based on the basic supply and demand. There just isn't much interest in FC, when compared to ASM.

I'd take a run of Four Color any day over ASM or just about anything else of that type of scale, mainly because of the variety of material contained therein and also because Spidey is available in reprint tpb form and would be easy to read if I wanted to experience the repetitve soap opera that lies within the run. I have a few issues of FC and I pull them out to look at and fondle a lot more than the scattered issues of ASM I have...plus they have that great old comic smell that the Spideys haven't acquired thus far....for aroma alone I'd opt for the FC run...my vote goes to it!

Lump me in with those who would take a full run of FC over ASM, and I have almost a complete run of ASM but to me it pales in comparison to the FC. The runs that impress me the most are those that are hardest to get. Action 1 - 150, Detective 1 - 100, Tales of Suspense 1 - 38 in F or better. You show me someone who has a publisher set of Timelys and that person is who I would consider a collector non par.
Where does he get those wonderful toys!
I have yet begun to surrender.

| Interesting comparison...considering... 1) Comic shops and hoarders have been around since the early 1960's...so it probably wouldn't be hard to locate and build a complete ASM collection...costly, but possible... 2) The 4-Color run would be tougher...and yet it shouldn't be. There probably weren't any where near as many horders from the 1940s-1950s...but there were 5X as many issues published of the 4-color...Dell had enormous print runs and you'd think, logically, that there would be more copies of the issues available...and in a variety of conditions...but having collected them for the last 40+ years, I can attest that they aren't as available as they should be...

| Well, my take on your comments about a complete ASM run verses 4-CLR run is that, you gotta think that alot of what ASM books that are on eBay! are people with those books that are just trying to capitalize on the popularity of the character and their perceived (over-inflated) value!. You really gotta be a DIE-HARD comic collector with an appreciation of what the Dell Four Color line represents. To even attempt to aquire a FULL RUN of those comics. (which you obviously are!) And... have the availible funds and time to search them out. I'm sure that there are probably tons of Comic Dealers selling on ebay that feel that they'll make MORE money putting Amazing Spider-Man comics on ebay than selling old Dell Four Color Comics. So they put 10 times more of Spidey's up for auction as opposed to those old Dell's. Have you ever asked a seller if he has old Dell's 4C's to sell? I'm sure that quite a few of them would work out some deals with you OFF ebay. I've had some luck like that! My 2 cents! -FBTA
