Hi,

New to the forums (and comics grading) here. I've been reading this forum, and I had a general question about comics grading.

I have here a batch of comics that were maybe read once or twice, then boxed and stored in a closet. Most are late 1980's to mid-1990's vintage. Most seem to be in pretty good shape upon first glance.  The problem: they were stored vertically without a backing board.  Fortunately, they were bagged in small batches, limiting the amount by which they could sag under the force of gravity.  Still, many are slightly warped because of this; going by that "Free-BIGS" guide, I'd say the closest approximation of the damage would be "large shallow bend" (under the "Lying Flat" category).

Free-BIGS seems to put this as the difference between an 8.0 and an 8.5 and above. In fact, judging by Free-BIGS, many of these issues might rate a 9.4 without the warping.

Now, how much of a factor is this in terms of grading, really?

Well, comic grading is to some degree a matter of opinion. I take FREE-BIGS pretty seriously; whenever I'm stuck on something I turn to it to see what it has to say. Sometimes it can be a little harsh & sometimes a little too lenient for my blood, but in this case I agree. A large bend like that hurts eye appeal.

It does seem like the kind of defect that could possibly be fixed up some though. Put each comic in it's own bag with its own board, pack them fairly tightly in a box for a while, and see if the bend doesn't improve a bit. I bet it will.

Speedy almost hit it. You would need to store the comics horizontally for a time, in less you wanted to press them. The best way to take the bend out is to bag and board them, then place them in groups of 10 or so between two heavy books, such as encyclopedias and allow them to straighten out.

Unless the bend caused a crease or a color break, then mostly it wont hurt the grade.

So it sounds like you've done this before Joker. About how long does it take? And if the comic is as bent as AimHere indicates, can one expect it to straighten out completely?

Depending on the number you have to work with it can take up to a month , maybe longer but I have never had to go that long. Simply put them somewhere and leave them alone. You would never imagine how easy it is to forget about something for a month or more. I usually will take a book and place it with some more moderns if all I have is one to do that way you get better pressure from more books. Had to do it as you would not believe how some people package stuff.
