What's in your newspaper?

Hi All,

I posted a list of comic strips in the Marketplace, and had mentioned that there were different strips being published in another paper in my area. Here's what's in the weekday edition of the newspaper we get:

Baby Blues, Beetle Bailey, Blondie, Classic Peanuts, Close To Home, Curtis, Dennis The Menace, Dilbert, Doonesbury, Family Circus, For Better of For Worse, Garfield, Get Fuzzy, Hagar The Horrible, Hocus Focus, Jumpstart, The Lockhorns, Mallard Fillmore, Marmaduke, Pickles, Red And Rover, Sally Forth, Zits.

Here's what's in the other newspaper's weekday edition: (Differences in all caps)

BALLARD STREET, 'B.C.', Baby Blues, BALDO, Beetle Bailey, Blondie, Classic Peanuts, Dennis The Menace, Dilbert, Family Circus, Garfield, Hagar The Horrible, Jump Start, LUANN, MUTTS, Pickles, Sally Forth, SPEED BUMP, Zits.

The sunday editions for both newspapers contain different content than their weekday versions, and also differ from each other. If you want me to post those lists just let me know. -Awhile back I remember seeing Spiderman in ..I think it was USA Today.

Those great old paperback collections of newspaper strips...

Picked up a few at a used bookstore the other day...:D...almost all of them 1st printings...

It's amazing how hard these are to find in perfect shape...:hmmmm:

I really don't collect them, but I do have two. They are both from the forties, one is Flash Gordon, I can't remember what the other one is.

Finally got a copy of the Nostalgia Press editon from 1972...really nice format. ;)

I think that gives me a copy of everything ever reprinted of Little Nemo...:hmmmm:

Picked up Volume #1 of the new hardback collection from Hermes Publishing..."Dailies 1929-1931"

Very nicely done in a large format...2 dailies per page in the same size they were originally published in...:D

***Interesting!...I pulled this picture from amazon.com because the book was too big for my scanner bed...and my copy says "1929-1930"...??? :hmmmm: Must have been a pre-production photo on Amazon and they decided to only do two years per volume...

I recently came across 5 of these specimens in my scavenging and wonder if anybody on the board here knows how or where they might have been originally sold. Each issue features a weeks worth of strips like Peanuts, Nancy, Tarzan, Garfield, Marmaduke and many others in stat form, black and white with Sundays at the rear. Since the cover has a price of fifty cents they must have been sold somewhere. Anyone ever seen these for sale anywhere? I can find no listings for them at Abebooks, Amazon, Bookfinder or other book search sites. Would value any info...

Alley Oop Cartoon Strip

I ran across this last night-

I watched a really interesting hour show last night on Iowa PBS- “V.T. Hamlin & Alley Oop”. V.T. Hamlin was born in Perry, IA, ran the Des Moines Registers cartoon syndicate for a few years, and then started his own strip “Alley Oop”. It had interviews with a bunch of underground cartoonists and current & former cartoonists for Alley Oop. The film seemed to have been recorded at ComicCon out in San Diego in 2005 and was directed by Max Allen Collins (Road to Perdition) and filmed/ edited through the University of Iowa. It had Frank Stack (Foolbert Sturgeon), Denis Kitchen (Kitchen Sink), Trina Robbins (Wimmen's Comix), Will Eisner (Spirit), William Stout (Slow Death), Stan Sakai (Albedo Comics), Russell Myers (Broomhilda), Sergio Aragones (Mad), Russ Cochran (Reprinted E.C. Comics), with Dave Graue, Jack Bender, and Carol Bender (Alley Oop cartoonists) interviews. I used to read Alley Oop back in the late ‘50’s and early ‘60’s in the old Des Moines Tribune. It was one of the strips that inspired me. It was a good film.

Has any one else ever seen this, or did it just get shown in Iowa due to all the Iowa connections? :hmmmm:

Alley Oop is not in our local paper anymore.
