Nice print that I had not seen before either but $850.00 is too much for me these days. Looked over the Genesis book at barnes and nobles the other day. The artwork is great but I passed on buying a copy also.

These were sold out basically when they were released. There's on on eBay now and they're asking $3k

Thanks for the link. I'm kind of glad I just watched the vid and didn't pay to see RC and FM because they didn't really cover any ground that hadn't been brought up before. It seemed to be RC for the novice more than RC for the long time fan. And boy did he convey that he wanted to get the hell out of there but quick. I also found FM to be a bit of an annoying interviewer....So thanks for the taste and allowing me to experience the great RC without having to leave home to do so.

At the talk, Crumb said he specifically left out genitalia so that it could get a wider audience even with the age caution/warning on the book. He mentioned how he had to ask Aline how to draw a man spilling his seed on the floor for one panel and she just suggested he do it from the side.

read through this about halfway last night while waiting for Trick or Treaters. The art is excellent, and I find the stories interesting, although I was already familiar with them from reading Genesis before. Not sure why anyone would get bent out of shape from reading this. This is probably the most tame Crumb item I can remember reading.

I think I prefer the classic comic book design of the English language cover. The German cover looks a tad too high-brow for my cheesy tastes.

Anyone notice this signed edition sold by Alex went for over $700, I'm wondering if this is the same edition (just one of the first 10 off the press) as being sold unsigned at bookstores for $25 and that you can pick up at the R. Crumb engagement for also $25? Seems to be a few on eBay at buy it now for $200.

He's coming to SF, as well, in conversation with Spiegelman's wife, Francois Mouly for roughly the same price. Have you heard if he's going to be signing afterwards, or just entertaining questions and then out the door.....

Crumb is speaking about his book next week. Bought a ticket to it, hope the $57 ticket is worth it. There's 4 other appearances happening in the U.S.

Artwise, I'm very much in agreement with KD, but I think the real reason he stopped reading is that his eyes were glazing over.....Reading Genesis is a great antidote for insomnia...that may be what he's really trying to say to avoid offending Mr. C. or The Almighty...and yes, 50, I highly recommend the Wolverton Bible, especially in it's current form as published by Fantagraphics. Personally, since I think they are the same price, if someone held a gun to my head and said you have to choose Crumb or Wolverton's book, I'd have to say the latter, in all honesty.....of course that may also point to the reason my interest in Crumb's Genesis is on the low side....I read the Wolverton version within the last year and it's perhaps too soon to really be objective.

Argus, if you think Crumb's Genesis is a Cliffs Notes version, be advised that it is the COMPLETE Book Of Genesis and not some sort of abridgement. If you read Crumb's book, you will have read The Book Of Genesis and can move on to Exodus and the rest.....

I have not yet read it, but I really haven't looked at much UG material.

While I have never been a big bible fan, I guess this may be the only way I'll read through it.

Well, I spent a few hours last night and this morning reading The Book Of Genesis, and while there were a few things I really liked about the book; Crumb's art in general, his interpretation of the serpent in the Garden Of Eden pre-snake, The story of Noah before the flood, and The story of Lot, and some other things, I found for the most part I was bored reading the text. It really is the whole book of Genesis, with all the begats and begots and names and all I could think of was that this book will do well with the folks I see on the bus all the time with their little bibles, reading with their lips a-movin' and when they get to the end they'll start all over again. Crumb, in his introduction, states that he saw the project as pretty much a straight illustration job, and that comes across pretty plainly. He also states that he didn't really set out to offend anyone even though he's a firm believer of the bible being a book written by men and not by god, and that's probably the thing that will get him into the hottest water with the true believing crowd, which I'm not one of. The book will probably do well with people that aren't his rabid fans because there's enough Crumb-looking females and nudity and weirdness to just pique the average reader, but for those of us long time Crumb enthusiasts it just seems like sanitized Crumb. It may be, aside from the Kafka book, the first tome of his to not say Adults Only, but rather "Adult Supervision Recommended For Minors." With that warning you know this ain't your Dad's Crumb. I don't expect Crumb to be doing stuff as he did in the 60's and 70's like Joe Blow and that ilk, but this book is a little too mainstream for my tastes. I guess that since Crumb sees Genesis and the bible akin to fairy tales and myths, I would have preferred his adaptation of Grimms Fairy Tales or Hans Christian Andersen. Of course, I'm not going to get rid of my copy, I just don't think I'll be taking it down from the shelf and thumbing through it very often. Not like say, Carload Of Comics, The Bible Of Filth, most of the volumes of Complete Crumb, or the sketchbooks. The art IS quite excellent and some of the best he's rendered, I just wish it was for something else.

Picked up a lovely looking used copy today for under $13 with a dealer discount from a local store, and must say that after thumbing through it, I'm more excited about the book. I'll try to read it tonight or tomorrow and post a few thoughts, but I'm more optimistic now that it's on my nightstand and I've read Crumb's intro about his aims re: this tome. Forget my previous post's....must've been some bad fuggum or such....
