Lost his house, cant find work, Lives at a friends house for now. Lives in California in one the most costly areas to live. He might not have handled it well in the beginning but it all turned out alright. He got the cash he needed and I got my Donahue Zap#1. Shipped it tues from California, I got it thurs in NJ. Not bad. I cant say how crazy I might get given his situation. People do weird stuff when they get desperate. Well, it might have been $300.00 to start. Alex who lives next to God (R.Crumb) in France asked him if he had doubles of anything and If he sent them to him he would send one back signed by Crumb. The seller just plain blew him off saying he needed cash. He's out of work and homeless also living at a friends house. The next time I saw the listing it was at $50.00 BIN. It had no Back cover picture and it was not a good picture but I was 80% sure it was a Donahue copy by what was called an uneven trim.

I sent a email asking about if it said "Printed by Don Donahue" on back. He sends me back a non answer saying "Does this mean its a Rare 1st edition". Before he got back to me he raised the BIN to $ 500.00 . I wrote back that "No its not a 1st but a second print" and I told him It was pretty slimy to change the price without knowing what it was really worth after I asked the question and he now had revised the listing to say it was a Donahue Edition.

Well I went to bed a little pissed at the seller and kicking myself for not hitting the BIN on it right away. The seller knows nothing about undergrounds but has 10,000 albums to sell. It could have been a 3rd print reddish orange cover. I woke up Tues Morning to find a email saying he lowered the BIN to $150.00 and he also left a Best offer option on it. So I Offered a $100.00 for it figuring he cost me $50 bucks already, sounded fair to me :hmmmm: He took the offer and sent it out that day
And thats how all good comix purchase stories should end.

" Life is good in its twisting & turning ways". :P

RE: Steals & Deals for You!

Congrats, saw that one and thought it was a good deal, think it was originally listed for $300 before getting relisted?

RE: Steals & Deals for You!

Just purchased a Zap #1 Donahue in Fine condition for $100.00

it was a Buy it now at $150.00 with Best offer option.

I offered $100.00 and it was accepted. Plymell told me he printed about 500 copies total of both issues (only #1 has Crumb, which is the one advertised), Plymell added that there was maybe 100-200 of the first issue and 200-300 of the 2nd issue (two variants) and the issues may have had variants between those 2nd issues. The 2nd issue has some beautiful art and color, including a Branaman centerfold.
#1 should be going for $1,000's in my opinion. Plymell bootlegged this page (from Yarrowstalks #2, which he received from a friend of his who dropped the tabloid off at his print shop, per Pam Plymell) a couple months before he even met (was introduced by Don Donahue) Crumb. This is the legendary page from which Plymell and Donahue thought they should print a comic book together of Crumb's work. This was printed approx. Aug of 1967, Donahue then met Crumb at a party in San Francisco about Oct. 1967.
Plymell also told me he had some kid selling these on the corner for a quarter and didn't sell many of them. He doesn't even had a copy of it. How many of these could have survived? I got my copies from a guy who bought a stack of Berkeley Barbs and there was a few of The Last Times forgotten about stuck in the stack.
Also, Plymell described the cover "That's Ginsberg praying to the junkyard god." if you're into the Beat Generation stuff which was the forbearer to the hippie generation and a direct prelude to the Underground comix movement.
Oh, congrats on the pick up.
Brother J, I don't think contacting a seller and offering a price for Buy It Now is wrong before it's bid on and sold, but contacting a seller after it's sold and offering more is just plain wrong. But I doubt someone posting a 1st print FF#1 for $5 is likely (though it could happen) and more a scam by the seller of using a stock photo to sell a later printing is more likely.

RE: Steals & Deals for You!

looks like a sweet deal for someone that has some dough, too bad that's not me.

If I had $75 to spend on undergrounds, I'd probably be buying some of the books you're offering, Rev, as there has been some real good deals on good stuff.

RE: Steals & Deals for You!

I was thinking the same thing. I just had a similar situation with a Freak Brothers #1. Someone had a grey tire FB #1 listed with a $5.00 BIN, which I was happy to pop as soon as I saw it. When the book finally arrived, I instead received a 14th printing. When I got in touch with the seller, he told me he was using a stock picture and used the wrong one...

Seems to be too much of a coincidence with a rash of sellers all of the sudden backing out of sales left and right. :hmmmm:

RE: Steals & Deals for You!

Guy must've been born under a bad sign....

RE: Steals & Deals for You!

Ya, like how sorry you are that it got stolen from his car....

RE: Steals & Deals for You!

Be sure to leave feedback.

RE: Steals & Deals for You!

Too good to be true. Boy, was I tempted to pull the trigger, though. :w00t:
