best presenting 2.5 in all the land,
that book has nary a flaw besides someone tried to smoke it! :dontknow:

fair amount of uncertainty in sending my top three books away...

i think it taught me that the best remaining mowry salvaged plymells...
will not grade higher than 2.0
will get universal blue labels if they are fully intact books
will not be 'qualified' either with green labels or with a notation of the fire on the label (though each has a COA from Donahue/Fogel)

but that is an improvement over our speculation that all the salvaged plymells would be labeled PR 0.5

that is exactly correct. it is an untrimmed copy (including guts) that is larger than an ordinary copy. & ComicWiz had it priced very fairly IMHO... just under FUG FN... that is why i could not pass it up.

Is the book untrimmed and actually larger than a typical Zap #0 or does it just have a white border? Very very cool variant in any case.

I returned that copy of SF #1 for a full refund. The seller said it was NM, but it turned out to be a 6.0 (on a good day).

In regards to the CR/OW designation, a CGC 9.6 can have that with little problem, typically a 9.8 must have OW pages or better. There are a few 9.8's with CR/OW pages but they are few & far between. For example, the C#nt CGC 9.8 (File Copy) for sale at www.pedigreecomics.com would have been a 9.9 per CGC if the page quality would have been better.

Guy, please contact me as I found the missing Felch, sorry about that.

The print run on this Felch must have been very small. Jay Lynch told me that in the mid 70's printing costs had skyrocketed & therefore potential profits from an underground comic had dropped significantly so it is possible it had a small initial run. Plus why did it not have a cover price at first? I was advidly buying undergrounds at that time and I do not remember this book when it came out. With it's lineup of top artists, you think it would have benn hyped somewhat through the Comics Buyer's Guide or some other venue.

Guy, you are our best detective, another mystery to solve.

I don't own a first print Felch, either. I've often wondered just how many copies were printed, given how rare it seems to be. My guess is that it's well below 5,000. Probably around the 2-3,000 mark.

It really is funny how certain books that had print runs of 1k back in the 70s seem to turn up all the time while others with print runs 2-3x as many barely ever turn up. A lot of it has to do with distribution, I suppose.

Take Vietnam (don't have the Kennedy # offhand), for example. Julian Bond told me that around 5,000 copies were printed in 1967-8, but try to find a copy of it today. It was handed out at a rally back then, so most of the copies were likely trashed.

Running Dog is another ridiculously rare item. There were 2,000 printed, but they were handed out to passers-by on the streets of Miami as it contained ads for local businesses. I'm sure almost all of these were also thrown in trashcans.

Unless it was inside one of the other books, I didn't get it. I thought it was strange you said you would send it with the other books and all the books except for it were there. I even went through the box twice looking for it. You might want to check your stock again and see if you forgot to include it in the box.

well... i will take a stab... :hmmmm:
perhaps something to do w/ the June 73 supreme court ruling obscene material ruling?
by late 74 (e.g. Bijou 8) you had artists/publishers reacting to the ruling...
so it could stand to reason that a book as 'fringe' as Felch could have been kept down-low, perhaps had a very low print run (<5000?), or suffered the fate of similar u-comix (confiscations).

Could any of the pundits on the boards weigh in on why the First print Felch does seem to be scarce? JK says it was released in 1975. Not exactly a period known for scarce undergrounds. There isn't a print run number in JK either. It took me over a year of looking to find one.

I got the Zap graded raw. I can't remember exactly how long ago but it's well over a year. I Distinctly remember the Snatch auction. It was the first time I ever heard Don describe a comic as "flawless" so I had to have it. After emailing him and Mark Haspel at CGC I had Don ship it directly to the CGC so I got the File Copy designation.

Actually I haven't posted much in any of the boards. I guess I've just been antisocial. Although I did loose my virginity on the Headcomix boards recently. Also, actually been working some overtime to support my comix habit. Also doing some major landscaping work in my back yard. Been a busy boy.

The Die Gretchen is one of my favorite covers. I was offered a CGC 9.6 at an insane price and decided on a raw copy that I just submitted, hoping for a 9.0/9.2 on that copy.

The Feel Good Funnies and the Bent were PGX. I had all of them graded myself. Between the Portland and Seattle shows not many people show up beside me with undergrounds. Artystic has done Portland the last couple of years and brings a box or two and he traded for a Jiz in 9.6 that I had.

I only have one graded comic, which I submitted myself, and that's Slow Death #10 (9.4). It's the only graded copy, so it's the highest. Not a rare book, no, but Slow Death was one of the series that started it all for me, so I'm determined to have the entire run slabbed. Ideally, I'd like to have #1-11 in 9.8, but that's going to be tough.
