I was lucky enought to get one of those Air Pirates sets by Fishnuts too when I was the only bidder for $49.99. Now those and the Cherry's seem to be the only things consistantly above guide lately.

Well I'm glad I picked up several sets of Air Pirates #1 & 2 when Fishnuts had his beautiful copies on ebay for $65.00 a set. The copies I received from him are in the 9.2 to 9.4 range and maybe a little more. I remember my wife looking at me with that look ( You guys know that look, lol ) when I told her that I thought they would be a good investment. She no longer gives me that look when I show her some of the prices that they are going for now. I barely even opened them up except to check page paper condition since I have lesser copies to read. They will be going to CGC for grading along with a couple dozen other choice 1st print titles that I have in similar condition.

I have some reservations in encapsulating comix but I firmly believe it is the best way to get the best return from my investment. I have a "Goose Lake Gags" that appears to be in the 7.0 range that I will CGC . IT only cost me $4.00 in set of mixed comix where I spotted the clown face peeking out from behind another comix in the batch being sold. I don't think I can go wrong getting that graded since I paid so little for it. It's a wonder that any copies of this concert program done in comix format survived after probably being rolled up in many attendees back pockets and used to roll doobies on way back when. :rolleyes: Happy Hunting !!!

There was only 1 other cgc9.4 AP #2's when I had mine graded. Must be more coming out of hiding now. Also have a 9.8 C--t. I agree with the good dr., $150 for a 7.0 is too high but have had no trouble finding them for $50.00. As for being so common I don't know. So many were confiscated, maybe they have just faired better than most and not been beer stained and thrown away like some others. Seems like they should get some credit for pushing the envelope with such blatant artwork.

I got two issues of Slow Death graded, too: My #7 came back a 9.6 OWW and my #11 a 9.6 W. That series was one of the reasons I started collecting UGs, back in the day, so I'm determined to get the whole run slabbed.

Beautiful. There was a lower grade on on eBay recently that didn't sell at $99, but I think that was because it was from a seller in Italy.

That was per issue not for the pair. I assumed we were talking per book for the ones on the site you were talking about. Although I would sell the pair for $150. Again, if you get into cgc high grade, that is a different story. There you are selling to a different crowd that pays multiples of guide.

Edited: well, on 2nd thought i see the CGC census is loaded with 9.0 and greater for both books, including about 4 9.6's for both books

I personally think the Air Pirates books are a little overrated. They seem fairly common (for an underground), but they command a high price because of high demand. People who don't typically collect undergrounds want copies of the Air Pirates books. Just take a look at Eggs' selling thread on the CGC boards. Every time he lists a copy of either #1 or #2, they sell almost immediately.

First, don't believe the guide on everything. Overstreet lists x-men 181-200 something for $8 or so. $15 for 150. I have alll you want for $2 and $3. Second, Dan used my data base for most of the rare higher priced ugs. But not the common stuff. The $150 for a fine was not my doing. He did make mistakes in the first guide, I corrected about 1 hundred of them. They should appear in the next guide whenever. But, I wish I caught the Air Pirates. If you tell me you can get $1000 for a cgc 9.8 that's one thing, but a 7 at $150 is too high. I have all you want at $100. Bet nobody takes me up on it.

FUG in FN 6.0 is $150...
so if one could get them for less than the $140 list
(and that is usually the case w/ Pedigree),
say $120 or a little less...
it could be a pretty good deal!

While I will admit that they graded, why would anyone get excited at 7's of a relatively common set of books for a starting bid of $140? The 9.6 Ozone was exciting, even I though of buying it, but Air Pirates??????

that book has nary a flaw besides someone tried to smoke it! :dontknow:

fair amount of uncertainty in sending my top three books away...

i think it taught me that the best remaining mowry salvaged plymells...
will not grade higher than 2.0
will get universal blue labels if they are fully intact books
will not be 'qualified' either with green labels or with a notation of the fire on the label (though each has a COA from Donahue/Fogel)

but that is an improvement over our speculation that all the salvaged plymells would be labeled PR 0.5

that is exactly correct. it is an untrimmed copy (including guts) that is larger than an ordinary copy. & ComicWiz had it priced very fairly IMHO... just under FUG FN... that is why i could not pass it up.

Is the book untrimmed and actually larger than a typical Zap #0 or does it just have a white border? Very very cool variant in any case.

I returned that copy of SF #1 for a full refund. The seller said it was NM, but it turned out to be a 6.0 (on a good day).

In regards to the CR/OW designation, a CGC 9.6 can have that with little problem, typically a 9.8 must have OW pages or better. There are a few 9.8's with CR/OW pages but they are few & far between. For example, the C#nt CGC 9.8 (File Copy) for sale at www.pedigreecomics.com would have been a 9.9 per CGC if the page quality would have been better.
