While I was surfing last night, I found a really remarkable site run by Paul Tumey, devoted to Jack Cole's career. Mr. Tumey goes into extraordinary depth on his subject, reprints a lot of obscure stories gathered together from all over, and brings a lot of scholarship to the table as well.

This is something that we do over in another forum and it's impressive to see what some people have collected together.

It doesn't have to be full runs, or even the same title, just as long as there is a theme to what you've collected!

Here's a few of mine:

Probably the most difficult run I've tried to put together. I'm still missing 8 issues if anyone has any that aren't in the picture!

War!

GA war books are so underappreciated. Not the Timely war covers, but the actual war books like "Fightin' Marines", "Battle Action" and books like that. They are SO tough to find in high grade also. I haven't even seen anywhere near most of the covers out there because they simply do not show up for sale often. In fact, I am willing to bet that there are many GA war books which have fewer copies in high grade than there are Action Comics #1 in high grade. No exaggeration. That's how tough they are to find one in high grade. They all tend to be 1.0-5.0. If you can find any unrestored copy of an Atlas war book in 8.0 or higher buy it at full guide if that's what it takes. Many, if not most of the GA war books don't have copies graded higher than VF, and there are many which might not have any graded copies.

So, let's use this thread to show off some awesome war covers!

One of my favorite 50's stylists, it's always a treat to me to see his covers or interiors on comics that are usually not first-rate titles. I've read about his later career in "fine" art... but look what I discovered today:

Pushing his services as a portraitist, more than anything else. Pretty mainstream, pretty middlebrow; looks like he's found a niche for himself in the Norman Rockwell part of the art world. Not a word about his comic-book activities, of course.

While digging through my father-in-laws comic book collection (which he is giving us) we came across an odd german comic book.

I'm interested in getting more information on this book, like the date it was published and estimated value. I don't have pictures at the moment but can provide them soon.

The comic has a stamp on the stop that says:

Sporthaus Schuster Munchen

the Issue # is 15 and the very top says Verkaufsstelle der Henzelmann-Wasche

Reprints, trimmed, or the real thing?

Hi,

I recently acquired a couple of comics that aren't the size I expected them to be and I am wondering if they are reprints or have been trimmed. Can anyone help with this?

One is Heroic Comics #33 (Nov, 1945). It is 6 5/8 inches wide and not the Golden Age width I was expecting.

Unlike the other GA books I have that show their age, this book is in almost new condition. Since the book is the size of modern comics it makes me wonder if it is a reprint

The other book is New Heroic Comics #92 (Aug, 1954). At almost 6 3/4 inches wide, it is not quite the width of the other books that I have from that era. It is also in almost new condition.

Do I have reprints, trimmed books, or the real thing?

I am interested in hearing stories of best comic finds...garage sales, antique shops, etc.

Here is one of my favorites:

About 1980, I was in my middle teens and I went with my parents to an out of the way antique store, and old converted Victorian mansion, the Orr House. Among other things I found 7 Raggedy Ann and Andy comic books.....for $1 each!!!! To me it was a fortune which I didnt have. I talked my Mom into getting them for me, a fact which she never lets me forget. Here they are.

I couldn't look at it for long, it's just too impressive. It'll take days for me to work up the constitution to go through the whole thing (at over 1000 pages, it'll take days to do the going through!). So many fraking sweet comics, piles and piles of beautiful Golden Age greats. It's just unbelievable. It has to be a million dollars worth of comics, easy, right? Jayzus, I'll not be able to sleep tonight.

All bought for an average of $7.50 each in 1973. O god, I can't stand it.

Batman books cut logo?

Can anyone out there tell me why the top half of my rarest oldest batman book has been sliced off? No really Why are some golden age batman books missing the upper logo?
here is a sample of a book I found on ebay . I to have the same book missing this same piece .
they have made a nice photo copy to occupy the missing piece but what is the reason for this? Excuse my ignorance please

My Captain Marvel crazy Dad, rest his soul, collected anything he could lay his hands on, even vaguely related to the Big Red Cheese. He and I used to debate long and hard on Superman vs. Captain Marvel, as DC essentially sued for copyright infringement and put Fawcett out of business. This was a time when comics were in decline. This essentially led to a very near DC monopoly, which was bad for business in many ways. Comics were bland and outdated. Then came the 60's and Marvel. DC saw big competition and changed to meet the new ideals and times in response. The golden age came to a close with a big bang, as many new and lasting super heroes were brought to life. In the 70's DC began to publish Captain Marvel, ironically enough. The problem as I see it with the Cheese, and why no titles have lasted, is that they never updated him enough to make him interesting. He, his villains, family and friends are all stuck in a post WW II state of being. This is similar, in effect, to bringing back the Andy Hardy movies and not changing much. Meanwhile, DC and Marvel shamelessly rip each other off and no copyright infringement is ever mentioned, so maybe DC learned a lesson, or maybe Stan Lee is just too tough to tangle with.

Another missing issue from CPG and a couple of questions about grading

Hello again from Planet Zero,

Just wondering how much I need to downgrade an otherwise VF- to VF comic due to a faded scrawl across the top (I don't suppose I could be lucky enough to have autographs). I have two pictured below....

Next I have a NM 9.4 copy of a freebie issue, except that a bit of cover color was taken off when it was detached. The remaining original tape was left on. Any ideas on how much it might be downgraded? It is sealed and bagged. I could take it out if I absolutely had to, but I would rather not.

Finally, I have another comic title that I cant find on CPG, could you guys and gals help please? This is a Sept 1966 issue, with no publisher data in the book, or on the cover, and no issue number.

Restoration

I have an off-white Sub-mariner (where are his eyebrows?) #20 missing a cover. It is a grade 0.5 currently. What does anyone think the grade would increase too with a photo-copied cover?

In a slightly different area, I also have a Master Comics # 15 with a large clean slit up the spine. It is an 8 without the slit. If the slit was repaired, how much do you think the grade would increase? I have it as a 3.5 currently.

Okay, one of the reasons I have started looking at GA books is because of LB Cole. His cover for Tailspin was so simple but beautifully arranged, I looked for more of his work.
