So BAC (for years held in a tiny hotel lobby across from Penn Station) has teamed up with Wizard, and they've completely reinvented the show. In addition to to moving to Pier 94 - supposedly bigger than the Javitz center where the NYCC is held - they've lined up one hell of a guest list:

VCC HOURS:

Saturday, October 17, 2009: 6 PM EDT - Midnight EDT (soft close)
Sunday, October 18, 2009: 4 PM EDT - 10 PM EDT.

In addition to the various comics and comic-related offerings,
there are usually VCC Charity Auctions with proceeds going to the charity
of the buyer's choice. (Usually comic-related charities like the
Hero Initiative or the CBLDF.)

Okay so I've been a fan and now I'm trying to get my comic book out there. My question is, thus far a comic book and starting a business (pay business license, tax id, TM business name, etc) costs LOADS OF MONEY and I just got out of college. I know they say try to get 50K to start a business but I don't have that.

Anyway so I am getting my comic book together and my question is, for you comic convention goers out there:

1) How likely are you to go up to an Indy/self-published booth? vs just going to the big names (Marvel, DC) only?

2) Do you get intimidated and keep like 10 feet away and look from a distance at a new indy booth (you know so you won't feel guilty that you need to buy it if they talk to you)?

3) Would you buy a t-shirt (or pencil or button) as well with the comic book name on it?

4) Have any tips for a newbie seller This'll be my first convention this year?

I am more buzzed about the V TV launch though from his article...

#3: V

This was a television franchise we weren't sure we wanted to see back again, and yet another remake/reboot that we were leery of. But this show opened our bleary eyes with its moody, weird and scary pilot. The cast, including Firefly's Morena Baccarin and Alan Tudyk and Lost's Elizabeth Mitchell, were snappy and fun to watch. And the old "beware of aliens bearing gifts" trope still turns out to have a decent amount of life left in it. The 4400's Scott Peters brings the right amount of paranoia to a story where the terrorists turn out to be anti-alien freedom fighters, and the media is lying to us all along. We heard several people marveling afterwards that a V remake could be so intriguing. Hollywood Reporter says the screening and panel got a strong Comic Con response."

NYC Convention

So it seems to NYC Comic Convention is just about a month away. I skipped it last year and kicked myself for months afterward. I'm definitely going this year.

For anyone who's going to be there, I super duper highly recommend that you take a little trip down to 14th street and 7th avenue at some point, to check out Time Machine. It's the best comic store I've ever been to, nothing even comes close. They've got new comics, but the main deal there is back issues. The store's reasonably big, and it's just about all back issues. The owner, Roger, is there most every day, he's a very friendly guy, and he bends over backwards to make you happy and give you a good deal. In this era of Barnes and Noble-style stores like Midtown Comics, Time Machine is a fantastic find. Really, do yourself the favor, you won't regret it.

(Man, they should pay me for this glowing review huh?)

Anyone else from the board going to be around? I have only been to San Diego and some really small Vancouver shows so I'm interested to see how the mid-range ones go. From the website it doesn't look like there's actually panels as such. Anyone know if they typically do have them? I'd like to talk to Brubaker at the very least.

Tips please, for new comic book creator. First time at a convention

Okay so I might have to go alone to my first convention. I'm going to have my own comic book or have several postcard size trading cards with a story on the back of each. Anyway my three questions are:

1. How do I leave for lunch or the bathroom? I mean I don't wanna leave my stuff and someone comes along and swipes it.

2. Okay so on the upcoming convention they said I have to have a tax code or something. Is there like a blanket tax thing to get if I'm gonna plan to travel all over to make sales?

3. Okay so I'm a fan to, do they let you leave your booth or you gotta stay at your booth all day. (Meaning you can't shop or be a fan and get autographs yourself.)

I would love to be able to offer it for my customers, but I'd like a little more clairity on how it's done. I think some people would want to use an unfamiliar computer to perform a financial transaction.

This is also CGC Signature Series event and while I know that means
that you can have your books signed in the presence of CGC and
they slab and certify - does this also mean that I can bring
books that I want graded and submit them at the show?

[b]Update:[/b] Contacted the organizer Ralph DiBernardo about
CGC grading at the show. Was told that I absolutely could
submit to CGC at the show. He said to contact him when I'm at the show
and also that he wouldn't be able to process credit cards, so would
have to be cash or check.

Will be going through my boxes this week!

Portland comic show
