I'm in the same boat as you, age wise as well...LOL :P

I have learned from experience that selling on Ebay, my collection, is not a quick profit or fast cash deal. It is a slow process that maintains itself for me. I set a monthly budget for listing expenses, and add items to an Ebay store, the least expensive way to sell on Ebay. I'm averaging about $200 a month in sales from roughly 350 to 450 listings ($12+$15.95 for the store, plus fvf's). Yes, you can get some great prices for some stuff, but the majority of your listings will sit up there and NOT SELL for months in the store format, or you give alot away cheap in auction listings every 7 days.

It's just small change, but in this economy, every lil bit helps. If I sold my whole collection in a lot, I probablly would give it way for lots less than selling over time.

I have noticed with some other large sellers there that they seem to have definate plans in their selling. For instance, I have noticed that MileHighComics and LoneStar (MyComicShop) both seem to have similar strategies, which is probably to drive traffic to the websites. Mile High lists many items in auctions as well as store listings, so I wonder sometimes how they are making money, where obviously they are losing lots in listing fees. Maybe not though, as they have a different pricing than myself I'm sure due to POWERSELLER status.

I would have a hard time selling off stuff that I collect. If I was to do that, I'd probably sell it all in one go, to just get rid of it. It would be a pain to sell individual books. I'd rather take a monetary hit of sort, to just rid them all locally.

If I sold something on Ebay from my core collection, it would be to replace it with other stuff I wanted more.

I list everything at 99p, so if drek sells for 99p so be it. I've made big losses on some sets but turned big profits on some books. It all balances out although it is getting very expensive to sell.

The cheaper the estimated realized price the less worthwhile it is to try and sell on eBay. IMO eBay is too pricey to try and unload books ... if I had any to unload.

What I mean: At what value is it worth it to you (very subjective) to go to the effort to set up an auction? Scanning, writing the text/information. Cost of doing business on Ebay. Shipping cost etc.
Of course fair and reasonable shipping cost is a plus for me.

All factored in, do you want a (single book for example, but could be a lot) to make at least $10.00 for example? More? Less?

Just wondering folks thoughts.... I have a number of books (been collecting on/off) for almost 40 years... Will be 47 soon... and at some point have to start thinking about getting rid of some... They are really only my treasures (not my wife's or sons).

Anyway, what do you like to get in return to make it worth your while...
