So that brings me back to the heptane, which doesn't remove the tape as easialy, but is much kinder on the inks.

That makes this experiment 101101708.
This Avengers #8 that I bought for 10 bucks is brittle and the tape has discolored the paper so I wasn't sure what to expect. Problems I have with the results is a silhouette where tape used to be, slight discoloration, loss of a tiny bit of ink on inside and 2 tiny pieces missing where the tear is. Things I am happy with is the tape is gone and another benefit that I was not expecting. I dry cleaned it a little between pictures but most of the change is from the solvent used. Cover is cleaner and whiter.

I just wanted to follow up and show the results of trying a 50/50 mix of Xylene and tolulene. It did remove the adhesive quite well be it is way to hard on the inks. I will have another example of tape removal in a day or 2. :)

The adhesive could come off no problem but I have experienced difficulty with the stains they cause. It is more discoloration than stain and even the most aggressive solvents might not clear that up. I sense that the professionals feel the same way and turn them down due to the risk of ruining the book.

There is also always a risk that the ink will come of during the adhesive removal and bleaching the discolored paper is even harder on the inks. Not something you would wanna try your first time out that is for sure.:hehe:

If you can show me how to get the adhesive and/or stains of what I'd call DRIED/FRIED tape then you'd be a TRUE "Superhero".

I have just aquired a Golden Age Superman #4 that was apparently stored in an attic. The tape itself actually flakes off by the touch, It's just the Brownish Stain that it leaves behind that I'd pay to know how to remove.

Any ideas???

One of the reason's I like this solvent is that it doesnt do anything negative that I can see. :)

Thats pretty impressive. Is there any staining or damage to the cover when the solvent dries? I've got a couple books that I've wanted to get tape removed from but it probably won't be worth spending the money for restoration fees since they're not worth a whole lot.

I had to first remove the front cover from the pages. It wasn’t attached by the original staples anymore but someone stapled 2 new ones to hold it in place.

Even though they are to different kinds of tape the answer is yes. It should be easier since its not mending a tear or sitting on the spine. I have noticed though price stickers have a tendancy to stain or discolor the paper in a hurry. :(

Hi all, I have worked on about 5 tape jobs so far so I have had a chance to practice a little. This is GA Daredevil #111 from 1954 and is in fair condition. Here is what the tape situation looks like on the back cover.

I will be using a solvent called Bestine to remove the tape and adhesive. Here you can see I am lifting the tape using a spatula and an eye dropper to distribute the solvent. You can see near the spatula how its wet.

Once the tape is removed the glue needs to removed. The Solvent makes the paper surface hard while loosening the adhesive allowing me to scrape it off with the spatula. The little pieces you see below the spatula is the adhesive balled up.

Here is how it came out with all off the tape and adhesive is gone. What do you think? I will do the front cover next which is worse.
