Stay away from that grading company (especially on comics with more than one printing on the market). And, to avoid too much disappointment, if buying a PGX graded book (and I hope you get a great low price on it) just assume the book's actual grade may really be a grade behind what the number reads. PGX offers a service of making victims of buyers and sellers alike. Again, I'm sorry.

Dan

RE: Did PGX Overgrade This Comic?

Who was the seller? That's just...I mean Ray Charles could grade that better.

TEX

RE: Did PGX Overgrade This Comic?

Wow. That is crazy. I guess I have been undergrading all my books. Actually......after seeing those pictures and that grade....I have a lot of GEM MINT 10.0's in my collection. Woo hooo!!!!

I only have a handful of graded books, and they are all CGC. If I were you, I would send those pictures to PGX and ask them to tell their graders to stop smoking funny things while they are working. They really should comp you something. They always have a table at the shows here in Portland. I'd love to take that book to the next show and give them some nice free advertising.

RE: Did PGX Overgrade This Comic?

I don't believe you can crack them open and then re-seal them to look like new. Perhaps a 9.0 for the grade (if that rusty staple happened after grading). It's not in the 9's now for sure though.
WOW.

I have to agree with Aaron. It's just shocking. Are you sure it wasn't cracked open and replaced? I have all of 6 graded comics, so what do I know? But can you crack a case open a re-seal it to make it look professionally done. I just can't believe that someone would rate that comic so highly.

TEX

RE: Did PGX Overgrade This Comic?
tegrady (7/2/2009)
The label says it was graded in 09/08, so I can't imagine the staple has rusted since then. If that staple is rusted this grades a heck of a lot lower but it could have happened after the fact...

All the other stuff... I would think a lower grade is more in order.

Did PGX Overgrade This Comic?

Hi, I won this copy of Shazam #1, PGX graded 9.6 with White Pages, on Ebay. I assumed that a grade of 9.6 would assure that the comic did not have condition issues like these. I don't have many PGX comics, but the few I do have looked pretty good. This one is a major disappointment.
As can be seen in the pics, there are two spine creases with color break, the bottom staple is rusted and the ink appears to have flaked off at the top right of the book, where it says 20c. Would you grade this a 9.6? I wouldn't. I would say this is maybe an 8.0 or 8.5? What would you grade it, assuming everything else about the book is perfect?
Thanks!
Spine crease with color break

Spine crease with color break

Rusted staple

Ink flaking on 20c
