This is GA Daredevil #111 from 1954 and is in fair condition. Here is what the tape situation looks like on the back cover.

I will be using a solvent called Bestine to remove the tape and adhesive. Here you can see I am lifting the tape using a spatula and an eye dropper to distribute the solvent. You can see near the spatula how its wet.

Once the tape is removed the glue needs to removed. The Solvent makes the paper surface hard while loosening the adhesive allowing me to scrape it off with the spatula. The little pieces you see below the spatula is the adhesive balled up.

Here is how it came out with all off the tape and adhesive is gone. Experiments in bleaching

.
Ever since I started experimenting with restoration, one of the subjects I am most interested in is cleaning, more specifically getting whites white again. I made a assumption everyone would except the trade off’s of bleaching but I was wrong. I personally would like my comics whiter but without the trade off’s. The reason for me posting my experiments is to see how others respond to the results and which they prefer. My early experiments involved water base solvents, but I had several problems with that. The results were unpredictable and went wrong 8 out of 10 times. The 2 out of 10 that came out good don’t dry perfectly flat (harder than it sounds) and require many pressings and time to get normal again if ever. Also there was a risk of residue remaining in the paper. Non water base Solvents like the ones the dry cleaners use seem to be where it is at. I have been trying different ones looking for predictability and hopeful some consistency. I have been working with one recently that shows promise. The right amount of exposure is tricky and I have to watch closely to make sure colors don’t lighten much or at all would be better. I haven’t experimented with dilution or mixing yet. Ok, so let me know which you prefer, the before or the after and then I can refine my efforts. Thanks….

Experiment 101011946

paper repair experiment 101011601

I have been experimenting with different mending tissue's on paper issue's ranging from tears to piece fill for some time now and I am still working on that but what I wanted to show today is something new I just tried. I recently acquired a large collection of DC comics from the 1960s. A lot of detective comics, superman, SuperBoy, etc. I also have a Justice League of America #1 in decent shape. My question to you is Are these worth having a professional grading done? What are the costs and how much does this add to the value. I have about a 100 comics to sell and would like to know if i should go through the trouble of getting a few more graded. The comics have been sitting up in the attic for a long time so none are in great shape but all reasonable. Please point me in the right direction.

Thank You,

Grading Sanity Check

Continued from: http://www.comicspriceguide.com/forum2/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=42782
Topic renamed slightly
I recently went premium I have just started to add my collection to the database. As I was entering in some issues last night and grading them and aside from being real pleased with the condition of some of the comics I haven't looked at in quite a while (and resisting the urge of it turning into a reading session) it made me realize it would be nice to have someone elses opinion on the grades. I try real hard to be objective with my own comics and not to look at them through NM colored glasses and usually when I post scans to be graded, I already have an idea on where I think it is and don't say as to not sway the opinion.

Since I'm sure that no-one is going to pop over and have a beer or two and help me enter my collection, I had an idea. Someone randomly choose an issue from my collection with the current grade, I post some scans and people check my accuracy. After say at least 5 opinions I then choose an issue from the choosers collection and they post a scan etc... and so on.

Anyone can join in, it doesn't have to be restricted to premium mebers as everyone can have at least 50. All that is needed is a link to your collection. In order to keep it moving a scan or a reply with the intent to post a scan should be posted within 48 hours. Cool thing is its still in its original plastic, sealed with two cards inside. As far as I knew it only came with one. Very good condition. But that puts me in a bad spot. Because I know that anyone collecting this specific book is looking for what card came with it.

So... Do I open the plastic for the first time and have the ability to list the two cards that came with it? Grading of comics is very subjective. The definitions provided below are simply guidelines for what you should look for when purchasing comics.

Some grading companies have actually devised a numeric or scale grading system (see table below) that ranges from 10.0 (mint) to 0.5 (poor). The advantages of such a system allow for variation in each grade and even allow for grade overlaps. For example, you can now have a grade called VERY GOOD/FINE. As stated earlier, the definitions below are simple guidelines to help you with purchases. For more detailed grading, you may wish to utilize a third party grading company.
=====================
rock
=======================
Evercleanse detox diet-

Before and After of non Aqueous cleaning

. I'm trying to get a pretty good grasp on grading standards now and between my own understanding (or lack thereof) of the 10 point scale and assistance from E-bigs I've been working on grading my comics for a personal database and just wanted to get some opinions from the experienced people here. This forum has already been a great help with all the grading examples already up. Anyway neither of these books are of any real value just want to see how accurate my grading is right now so hopefully I'll get the scans right on the first shot. This first one I thought was a 9. There is some abrasion down around the lower left corner and the lower right corner is blunted with some color breaking, not visible here is a small bend perpendicular to the lower left corner and the scratch that appears below the S & A is not actually on the comic.

On the back cover are two spine stress marks that are pretty hard to see on the scan.

This second one has some light creases near the bottom that aren't visible in the scan and the cover is slightly rolled over the pages, the pages themselves are off-white to cream near the edges. I figured this was 7.

The areas on the back that look yellow aren't actually yellow but those are the areas where there is some light soiling.

I look forward to your opinions and thanks in advance.
Dry cleaning

Before:

After:

"Restored" or Valueless?

I recently got into a heated debate with a colleague of mine over a "restored" issue of Daredevil #1, and since I now have access to a cadre of other fanatics here at CPG (that's you, yeah, the folks reading this), I figured it might be a good idea to tap this resource for the purposes of enhancing my position in this ongoing row (or putting me in my place as the case may be).

So there's this copy of DD #1, utterly cover-less, but man the interior pages are magnificent! - supple, almost snow-white, no scuffs, marks, stamps, cuts, coffee stains, ash marks, etc. The comic belongs to an old friend of ours who is notoriously finicky about how "complete" his runs are, and he bought this cover-less copy in order to fill the gap at the front of his lineup. Then he makes an executive decision - rebind the comic using a replica cover. So he goes and drops $40 on this excellent knock-off cover and trudges through the prolonged process of marrying his near-perfect cover-less issue with his smashing new reproduced front and back.

Now, although he claims that he will never attempt to sell his "restored" copy of DD #1 under any circumstances, the question as to whether or not it is actually "restored" remains open for us. In my opinion, the cover is not original material and therefore the comic itself is not a "restored" copy, but rather a hideous mutant of original content fused with what amounts to little more than a modern mimeograph.

Of course I can stick to my guns and lord my opinion over my buddy on this, taking the "purist high road" as it were, but having never worked with "restored" or "replicated" material myself, I'm totally out of my depth on this one.

Replacing a missing staple

I have a 1952 Dell Comics Tom and Jerry that is in Very Good shape except that it only has one staple in it.
Should I put in a new staple where the old one's holes are?
(If so, are there any tricks to doing a good job on it?)

I know that technically this is "restoration", but I figure it is the least offensive restoration aside from pressing by weight.
So... I know a few guys who use those black lights on their books, comb through each page, and count how many spine stress marks are on the spine and if it's even one over the limit they knock it down a grade.

To me that's waaaaaaaaaaayyyy over the top, unless it's a golden age book or a key silver age then that's about of extreme grading especially when it's just a bronze age book and up.

I guess i'm a PGX guy when it comes to grading. Something I consider a 9.0 some will call an 8.5, but I figure since they're my books and I never plan on selling them I can be a bit more relaxed on the extreme grading and just enjoy my books. I love my books.

Today I was looking through my collection, which I started from scratch again just about four months ago (and now have 604 at a value of over 6,500) and I compared them to the graded books I have and the PGX books were always about the same when I compared them to my books at the same grade while the CGC were usually one grade lower (example: 9.0 for them would be a 9.2 for me.)

I guess that got me thinking that people who view comics as an investment or business are usually the ones with the CGC grading standards and people like me who just love the hobby and don't plan on selling their books grade more like PGX. Crazy. Not saying one is right and one is wrong, but I just noticed the difference.

What are you guys when it comes to grading?

Uncanny X-Men 141 with stain

I bought this today but stupid me did't see the stain. I have the first edition of the Overstreet Grading Guide and when I try to grade my books using the "number" system I seem to be way off on the grade. I seems that I'm grading them either .5 to 1.0 higher than the opinions I've been receiving on my books.

What is your method in determining the "number" grade? I have been reading comic books for the past 10-12 year and haven't had to worry much about restored comics slipping into my collection since they are modern and I bought 95% of my comics off the rack at my LCS. Now that I have finished school and took the step into the "real" world, I am able to purchase some of the silver age comics that I've wanted since childhood. Do you guys have any advice for keeping restored comics out of my collection (other than get cgc comics)? Especially those purchased from ebay. Overstreet isn't crystal clear on this.

This is Uncanny X-Men #282 (Bishop cameo) and this wobbly defect apart, it's likely a 9.4 comic. What kind of impact does a defect like this have? Is it "not too bad" or "throw it away" material? I'm not anal about keeping a comic like this in my collection, but I do want to grade it correctly. So, basically, is this a VF 8.0 comic or a VG 4.0 ? Or worse? The wobbliness is basically half an inch from the top down over the cover and the fades off. Same from the bottom.

Thanks in advance,
Jens
