The problem in the 90's wasn't gimmick covers it was saturation and QC. There are lots of variants true but they are just a small portion of the overall print run. If there are not that many of that issue ordered the number of variants is smaller.

RE: Top Ten Hottest Back Issues

The current trend of variant comics was last visited in the 1990s. Foil covers. They sold out and many went into second and third printings. They currently go for cover price, sometimes a small bit above cover.

This just goes to show that you CANNOT manufacture a collectible.

RE: Top Ten Hottest Back Issues

For such an important book, in my opinion, GL40 has been undervalued for some time. Matter of fact a lot of the DC crossover/reintroduction have been somewhat undervalued. Glad that some of them are finally getting some attention but the prices have really gone crazy especially on the GL.

RE: Top Ten Hottest Back Issues

- Green Lantern #40 (Origin of the Guardians) - hot, hot, hot.

GL is hot anyway, but this particular issue is in high demand and at somewhat substantially inflated prices.

RE: Top Ten Hottest Back Issues

I am reading more current titles than ever before and I have no issue with price. Comics remain one of the more affordable forms of entertainment. I don't have a favorite age and I think there are over valued books in every one of them. That isn't for me to decide. All I know is that there is alot of good stuff coming out these days and it is too bad that more people do not partake in them ... for whatever reason.

RE: Top Ten Hottest Back Issues

I don't really buy any books from 2000 and up. Well some Ultimate books.

And this variant thing, ugh! I went into one LCS and this guy had variants going for almost 100 bucks. A hundred bucks! People are paying for the cover art. Don't they get it?

RE: Top Ten Hottest Back Issues

It probably sounds really stuffy and dismissive to say so, but nothing new is worth more than the cover price to me. Don't care what it is. New Spiderman, Hulk, Green Lantern and Daredevil variants instantly packaged by the store for $69 to $100 or more a pop? To me, it always seemed silly, because new comics will have much larger and longer active circulations than older back issues, and to say that "this comic is worth X amount because we don't know if there will be more prints" is a lame approach to pricing. I'm sure some of the prices aren't too inflated relative to their actual collectible value, but they all seem inflated to me.

In this case "new" to me is anything that's been produced in the past 5 years or so, in particular very recent issues.

RE: Top Ten Hottest Back Issues

I have been doing some digging and I just realized that the early Arkham asylums should be worth way more than they are.

Batman 258, 326, and 521 are considered the key issues, 1st recognized mention, 1st appearance, and first new appearance, but the origin that was eventually expanded upon in Grant Morrison's classic was create in all places who's who vol 1, number 1.

Overstreet does not even mention them, i feel that due to the game, and the history that has now been built around the place it should be worth a ton, if 1st silver age bat-mobiles and bat-caves are considered key issues than Arkham should be worth more too!! :)

I got the info from DC historian Bob Rozakis.

RE: Top Ten Hottest Back Issues

The first anti Venom. The cgc 9.8's of this book seem to have no ceiling, I just bought a 9.4 for 115 and I was happy to pay it!!! I have a few buddies in Raleigh that will pay me late 1's for it!

You left off Y the last man and preacher 1, but i think any successful vertigo series that runs it's course will eventually have the same fate as Sandman 1, hot as hell while it's in the public conscious, but as the hype dies down, so will the price!

What do you think about the first anti-venom in Amazing Spiderman 569???

RE: Top Ten Hottest Back Issues

I am not trying to discourage you from making such lists but maybe trying to use more sources than you are now will lend to less debate/trouble down the road. Making these lists isn't an easy thing when there are so many titles released every month and thousands of back issues to look through. BTW I think Wednesday Comics is probably pretty hot too. I have heard of it selling quite well in a few places.

RE: Top Ten Hottest Back Issues
spruce213 (8/5/2009)
What is GPA?
Here you go

http://comics.gpanalysis.com/default.asp

-----------

RE: Top Ten Hottest Back Issues

What is GPA?

RE: Top Ten Hottest Back Issues

BTW GPA gives a different story on ASM 300 namely that all grade categories have plateaued or are down. As well, GPA also says that there are over 3K up for auction right now. So is selling only 100 a month really "hot" as you say it consistently sell around 100 and the price is holding at $x ... so by what definition is the book "hot".

RE: Top Ten Hottest Back Issues
spruce213 (8/4/2009)
You're actually right about this, though Chew #1 has been out for how long now?
9 weeks. Dark Avengers #1 is hot, but doesn't even touch ASM 300 in total monthly back issue sales)

Remember that some books do not have very high printings and it doesn't take much for demand to vastly outstrip supply. Conversely, books like ASM may consistently sell over 100 plus issues a month so 100 may be low. As well, using ASM 300 again, the prices realized may be consistent with the monthly trend. For books like ASM 300 a spike of $10-$75 may not be unusual or a sign that the book is "hot".

(The fact I take into consideration is that ASM 300 currently sells over 100 copies monthly on eBay, something other back issue books from that era fail to do, as well as this book tends to go over guide a lot concerning sales.)

Remember this could be influencing people's buying and selling decisions and "inaccurate" hot charts can rise the ire of many if they are not representative as possible.

RE: Top Ten Hottest Back Issues

Okay, well with respect to total sales you have to be wary that some books may never hit your radars then because hot sales may be well under 100. Remember, "hot" to most people means that something has enjoyed rising or strong consistent sales and/or the price has been trending up rapidly. Price? Availability?Total sales? What are you considering as "back issue"? One month old? Two?

1 - I'm using only eBay and my local stores to gauge what is hot. Price people are paying, the amount of sales, like with Amazing Spider-Man #300 as sold more than the other Amazing Spider-Man books from that era in one month.

2 - Back issues. One or two months old are still fairly new in my opinion. It would be a HOT current issue, not back issue.

RE: Top Ten Hottest Back Issues

Just what are you using to gauge what is "hot"? Will these Zombies never die?

3 - Chew #1 (Hot, hot, hot) People want this book. I still want this book!

4 - Green Lantern 36; The Blackest Night is still the biggest rage whether it be the brightest day or the blackest night.

5 - GI Joe #1 (Marvel) GI Joe books are in high demand right now thanks to the upcoming movie. Go Joe!

6 - Amazing Spider-Man #600 (Queseda variant cover) Spidey's big 600 has hopefully brought people back to his book. So far so good.

7 - Iron Man #128 (Vol.1) I don't know why but this book never goes for under guide; any guide. With it's classic cover and storyline as well as being rumored as being the plot of the third Iron Man movie, Tony Stark and his alcohol issues are set to sky rocket.

8 - Dark Avengers #1; I haven't read it but, people seem to love it.

9 - Amazing Spider-Man 300; 102 sold on eBay this month; $100 - 150.00 seems to be the norm for the Venom 1st appearance in Mint form.

10 - Green Lantern 37 (variant issue) People want it more than they do a job it seems.
