The guy who took over from him at Wizard in 2003 was a member of ComicsPriceGuide.com prior to taking up office at Wizard.

Earl.
One of my friends is a friend of Jon and he used to sent Jon scans of last issues when he worked at Wizard because Overstreet was intentionally listing erroneous information to catch copyright infringement. There was definitely a different pricing philosophy either way. A book could be selling like crazy at $100 and Overstreet would keep it listed at $5. Wizard would have it priced at $100.

RE: Wizard Price Guide
Deathlok2001 (7/3/2009)
Wizards price guide is fit for 12 year olds to read while taking a dump in the crapper. If missed to many hot books over the years and although its not the best resource in the world I have picked up some good reads simply bt browsing in my LCS (they tend to have an opened readers copy handy ).
The thing is that what is "hot" by the time it hits Wizard may not be factual, nor may it reflect that whether a book is "hot" can be strictly a regional matter. When I owned a store back in the 90's I had kids trying to get me to buy there stuff and when I tld them it was worth less than cover they would protest that "But it is worth $x according to Wizard!". I don't think that Wizard EVER reflected how hot books were the year I owed that store. Not once.

IMO no guide can ever accurately reflect the market because it is always relying on old data. That is why they are called GUIDES. Anyone that takes them at face value will always end out getting disappointed/angry.

RE: Wizard Price Guide

It used to make me smile when people compared Overstreet to Wizard as the guy who did the Wizard pricing from 1993 to 2003 (Jon Warren) was the same guy who did the Overstreet price updates for 10 years before that, finishing with Oversteet in 1992 before moving to Wizard. There I go half ***'n it again!

Now, there was a time when WIZARD was actually a useful resource. Once upon a time, back in the day, comic geeks had to rely on a fat book, published once a year called the OVERSTREET PRICE GUIDE. It was a great reference for collectors & resellers to price their books or at least discover their value. I was always excited when the new volume would come out! EVERYONE used that book! Every comic shop you went to, every convention, even fellow collector buddies, would have that giant "comic bible" laying around. It sucked when some sort occurrence would transpire, like a character death or some cool first appearance, & you would have no idea of a value change until next Summer (when the next OVERSTREET would be published).

...Then in the 90s, someone had the idea of publishing a monthly price guide for the average collector to get their greasy mitts on. It was a kick-*** magazine at the time, containing well written inside scoop on the industry. I was extremely turned off when, WIZARD started effecting the physical realm of "collectible" comics by publishing their own "exclusive-variant-chromium-1 of 36 collectible cover-special/limited editions"! What a croc! That's like SPORTS ILLUSTRATED starting their own NFL team & then writing all their articles about that team only! Also, over time, WIZARD's price guide shrank in size, coverage, & relevance; making it completely useless.

...Enter the 21st century! With the internet finally replacing all other old school resources, we eventually get online price guides that have the ability to update instantly! Just imagine, whenever Scorsese makes that epic, Oscar-worthy SPEEDBALL movie staring Sean Penn, you will be able to see Amazing Spider-Man Annual #22 skyrocket instantly!! Thank the maker for the internet! I can't believe people lived before it existed.

RE: Wizard Price Guide

No Wizard is a useless price guide.
