Plus I've got a lead on a couple more.

After reading thehighevolutionary's post about buying his first comic book collection, I too decided that it would be a great time to get back in the business of buying and selling comics.

I put together a very simple and to-the-point flier. I wanted to start small, so I just begun by putting them up around the office. Within the first 30 minutes I already had about five hanging tags removed. I received my first email response to my flier within the first week.

The first person to respond was a b/f of a lady that had just started working here. He told me that they were hard up for cash and he was looking to sell some boxes of comics. He had said that he had about 11 boxes of comics that were all from within the last 10 years or so. Mainly Batman and Batman-related books. I was really hoping that he was going to tell me that he had some great Silver Age books that he was looking to dump. When he told me that it was all Modern Age stuff I was kind of reluctant to go look at it. I thought that I wasn't going to be able to offer him what he was hoping for. I decided to send him an email and explain to him my going rates for Modern Age comics and the reasons why. To my surprise, he emailed me back and told me that that's pretty much the price that he was expecting. He told me that I was more than welcome to come look at them with no obligation to buy. I started filling a bit better after he gave me that information.

A couple of days after receiving his first email I decided to use my lunch break to leave and take a look at what he had. I went to met him at his apartment. He was waiting outside for me when I got there. I parked my car and we went upstairs to his apartment. He had all of his books ready to go. All 11 boxes were out in the hallway lined up against one of the walls. I knelt down and began to browse through the stock.

A quick glance through each box discovered exactly what I expected to see; Batman, Detective Comics, Birds of Prey, Catwoman, Nightwing, Robin, JLA, JSA, etc. Something that I wasn't expecting however was the condition of the books. They were all pretty much in NM condition with bags and boards (except for some of the TPBs). After quickly looking through each box I stood back up and told him if my original offer still stood for the whole collection. He told me that he would actually take $10 less than my offer because one of the boxes wasn't completely full. It was only about 1/2 box. I was kind of taken back by his response but I quickly recovered and told him that he had a deal.

We were both happy with the deal and he said that he would even help me carry them out to my car. He did as he promised, I handed him his payment, and my car's back seat was now full of short boxes. Before I left we stood outside and chatted for a bit about comic-related stuff like some of the newer comics and The Incredible Hulk movie. I also thanked him and told him that if he knew anyone else that was looking to sell some comics to mention my name. He said that he would do just that, and I headed on back to work.

I will post some pictures of what I picked up when I get a chance. I was planning on doing that this weekend. I won't be able to take pictures of all the boxes that I bought. I've already listed a few auctions on Ebay and taken a few books out for my own collection. ;) Plus I've already made a sell of one short box to a girl here at work. Her purchase of one short box pretty much covered what I paid for the whole collection. :w00t:

**THIS SPACE RESERVED FOR UPCOMING PICTURES**

THE PICTURES ARE HERE!!!

Sorry it's taken me so long. I've been working some crazy-a$$ hours here lately. But anyway....I've taken quite a few of them. I took a group-shot of all the boxes together. Then they are broken down into twos. The first of the two is a picture of the box with just the lid off. Then the second of the two is a picture of the first few books out of the box. Just to give you an idea of what each box contains.

There are only about 9 1/2 short boxes in the picture. As I previously stated that I've already sold a full short box that pretty much covered my cost of the whole collection.

Just received a lead on a second collection. I have been working on my X-men run since about 2003 I think, and am closing in. But still, after thinking about it...it seems kind of stupid lol I would have been down a couple of years ago most likely if I just saved up the cash and bought a full run in a single purchase instead of trying to piece it together. I can say, that for any other Marvel run I start in the future that isn't in high grade, I will be buying in a single bulk purchase if possible. It is just so much easier and cheaper.

Buffyfan's back issue buys

Guess I'll have to start over here in this thread. I have three issues of The Flash to go to complete the run (106, 108, and 112), and I haven't been able to find decent copies for months now. I'm not looking for crazy high grades, but nothing below Fine. They're not exceptionally rare or exceptionally high priced (#106 ain't cheap), but still I just can't find them. I don't need a crazy bargain (it'd be nice), I just really want to find them. At least one or two of them.

I know that conventions are supposed to be a great resource, but I don't think there are going to be any in the NYC area for a while, at least not that I know of. What other options are there? I checked the CGC boards but it's not the easiest site to wade through. These boards are much better in my opinion. Are there other sites people trust? Do you think it'd make sense to put an ad up on craigslist.com? From what I've heard here, it's really sketchy.

DeadOne's Recent Pick-Ups

Everybody else has one. :D
I only recently (just over a year ago) got back into collecting comics. I used to collect as a teen(didn't take much care of my books, most were thrown away by my family), and as a college student( learned to bag and board, but didn't keep them either).
I recently made an online purchase from craigslist, and I thought it was a deal too good to be true. I purchased around 527 books (a WHOLE LOT of World War Hulk doubles, and Civil War), but I also have a few cover sketch variants, and the books were pretty current(the entire endangered species, and messiah complex run, with a few variants) and in NM condition(I think). My wallet is $250.00 less, but I bought 2 long boxes of all bagged and boarded books. Was this too much money, or did I come out on top of the deal? Would love anyones advice on this. Thank you, and I am excited to be here on CPG!

My recent arrivals

1963 #1-4, 6
A-1 #1 & 2
Action Comics #441
Brave & The Bold #49, 56, 72, 99
Captain Marvel Adventures #53
DC Comics Presents #1, 2, 38, 73, 85
DC Special Series #24
The Flash #110 (CGC 4.0), 119 (CGC 5.0), 157, 158 (CGC 8.0), 161, 172, 174, 176, 187, 188, 192, 211, 224
Green Lantern #43
Marvel Family #35
Super-Team Family #1, 3, 11, 15
Swamp Thing #29-33, 35, 36, 38, 39, 41-44, 46, 47, 50, 63, 64, Annual 2
Tom Strong #1 & 2
Whiz Comics #63
World's Finest #198 & 199
and this neat Captain Marvel Jr. Ski Jump "Action Toy" thing

Some pics of my favorite covers among them:

Captain Marvel #53:

Brave And The Bold #49:

Brave And The Bold #72:

Brave And The Bold #99:

The Flash #172:

The Marvel Family #35:

Maverick's Back Issue Buys

Not a bad pick up for $10.00 On the inside, 1st page bottom margin. That topic has come and gone. This is now the home for such said buys.

For starters..... I took a break from work last night and headed to my LCS. I haven't really been there some time. But I met one of the guys that works there one night at the local Wal-Mart. Him and I are pretty good friends/mates/what-have-you. He told me that the store just recently started buying and selling back issues again. They haven't been doing this since I can't remember when. So I decided to go and check it out.

I must say, I was pretty disappointed with there current selection of back issues. They only had about a short box and a half of inventory to browse through. However, the prices were pretty good. They were selling stuff for either $1 or $5. Nothing higher than that. Nothing lower either. Didn't really find anything that struck my fancy. I opted for some of their newer bargain books instead.

They usually have a pretty good selection of their newer stuff on sale for $1/each. They are all in pretty good condition. Mainly everything is in VF/NM, and they are all bagged/boarded. Even though they normally sell them for $1/each, they were having a sale on these too. They were down to $.50/each. Not much to rummage through here either. There were only a couple of long boxes left, and nothing really mainstream. I still went ahead and pick up a few things. I travel a great deal for work, and I would like a place to post the highs and lows for the various comic stores I visit across the country. This is entirely subjective, and I am looking for input from other members to discuss.

For instance, I was recently in Fort Lauderdale and I have to say, that city has soon really good stores. Most of the stores I visited had lots of bargain bins with quality books (I got a nice copy of Warlord #1 for a buck, for instance), as well as reasonably priced and well stocked back issue boxes going back to the Silver Age and beyond. Likewise, Green Bay, Wisconsin was a good comics city with several stores with very pleasing prices and a nice mix of old and newer books.

Shockingly, I have found Portland to be nearly devoid of decent deals. Cosmic Monkey was grossly overpriced (they must worship at the idol of Wizard prices) and though Things from Another World was a very nice shop, they had nothing in particular to offer as far as Silver Age or even Bronze Age backstock. The only place in town I found with even decent pricing (and grading) for their backstock was Excalibur Books. I picked up a few Bronze Age Brave and the Bold books I needed for my run there, and the staff was friendly and knowledgeable. For a city like Portland, this is very sad.

Likewise I was in Milwaukee last week and the store that seems to run that town was, if I recall correctly, called Collectors Edge. They had three locations and what few back issues they carried were not priced. "We gotta look them up", the clerk told me, and picked up his copy of Wizard. I got out of there as quickly as I could.

Anyone else want to tout their local comic book shop or wax eloquent about their city/town/rural mailing district's comic collecting atmosphere?

Universal Soldiers Complete Spiderman Mission

Adding in URL from old forum:
http://www.comicspriceguide.com/forum2/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=39447
Since everyone else seems to have their own thread about quests, hunts etc.. The show was really cool and lots of fun. Tons of hot girls dressed as super heroes, nice deals on back issues, just a good overall experience. I forgot how much you can stretch your dollars when buying multiple books from one dealer at conventions, however, I was surprised by how few sunday super deals I could find but not so much considering I primarily collect SA Marvel. On a side note, NEVER buy your comics at Black Cat Comics, the main guy at the booth is a complete a-hole and an idiot to boot.
