You will not make me paranoid, just more wise.

Sherlock, I am not really big on the action figures and statues, just the ones that really catch my eye. I own a Superman statue (full Size Bowen featured on Seinfeld) given to me on my birthday about 12 years ago. I have a really cool Batman statue made of resin. It depicts Batman leaping heroically from a building. Finally, I have a slew of Marvel Legends (Toy Biz), a Series 1 DC Direct Hal Jordan, and I just purchased the really snazzy Batman as a Green Lantern Figure. I am looking for the Phantom Stranger, and the Question figures, and more than likely I will buy more Green Lantern figures. When I can generate the motivation I will list my vintage comics, my statues, and figures.

 Thanks to you all.

Dave

RE: Displaying Comics
You actually reminded me of something that happened 12 or so years ago. I gave permission to the maintenance man to come in while I was at work so he could fix the dryer which he did. A couple of weeks passed and I was paying rent in the office when the maintenance man asked me whose toys those all belonged to which I responded my daughter thinking he was referring to the playhouse and toys that were setup in the dining area in lieu of a table. He than said no, I'm talking about the toys in the bedroom hanging all over the walls and stacked everywhere.
At that moment I was upset because I knew at that point he was referring the room where my toy collection was housed that I ALWAYS keep closed when I have someone come in the place. I was upset because he was there to fix the dryer and had no business opening doors throughout the apartment. Now the fact he brought it up led me to believe that nothing had been taken and other than berating him a little (his english wasn't very good, he was Swedish or something) and voicing my displeasure to the manager I let it go. I NEVER did allow anyone into the apartment after that unless someone was there, kind of alarming to imagine someone just walking through your place looking into places they have no business going.
Yea that would have upset me a bit for sure. Who knows, maybe he couldn't find the dryer and looked in the wrong room...but regardless, I don't like the thought of strangers snooping around my place and my comic books are my most prized possessions.

Hey Tex, I don't mean to make you paranoid. They would most likely be safe hanging on the wall but if you care about them enough then you would realize that its not really worth the risk. What if there was an earth quake and they all fell off the wall, then your book shelf fell over on top of them, crushing some of them. NM? Not anymore. Maybe a 4.5 at best...;)
RE: Displaying Comics

Well it did become an inconvenience at times trying to make sure someone would be home, but it beat the alternative. What's statues and such do you own? You should post your collection in the Toys thread in the General Interest section.

RE: Displaying Comics

I am so thankful for this forum,

I really apreciate having the opportunity to read what you all write. Sherlock and Harvest, thank you very much for your input. Not only will I abstain from hanging up my comics, I think that I shall invest in a sturdy filing cabinet that can be locked as well. From time to time repairman are given access to my dwelling too. I truly cannot afford to be naive. I have been lucky so far (I inventory my comics twice a year, and none have come up missing), but luck does run out, yes? I thank you all again. I think that I shall print a few scan a few of my favorites from coverbrowser.com and place them in frames or transparent sleeves on the wall. I do not know about my action figure collection and statues though. :hmmmm:

Dave

RE: Displaying Comics
Harvest (7/22/2008)
Well I read an article one time that talked about a man who had collected comics since like before world war 2, and even while he was in the war he had his mom pick up the comics for him. From what I understand, they were never read, just put straight onto shelves. He passed away 4-5 years ago and this was when the collection was discovered after his family tried to sell it off. After going through all the issues they noticed that there were large sequential parts of the collect missing, knowing full well that he never missed a single issue while collecting. They finally figured out that back in 1990 while they were having their house renovated, the contractor had been stealing them. I have no idea what comics he collected, and I know my collection is no where near as amazing as his must have been, but every once in a while I have my landlady come in, or an electrician or something of the sort while I'm not home. Chances are extremely slim that anything would ever happen, but I'm not leaving my ASM #1 hanging on the wall in the wide open. Most people wouldn't recognize a valuable comic for what it is, but I'm not taking the chance. That being said someone could just as easily snag a nice computer monitor or digital camera so I guess I'm just being paranoid. I have weird dreams about people screwing with my comics.
You actually reminded me of something that happened 12 or so years ago. That never even crossed my mind. It seems that you feel the same way about comics that I do. They are a slice of history right there in your own hands. I will give what you say serious thought. Anyway, Argus' scans look go great, I guess that scanning could always be an option for decoration. Thank you for your thoughts Harvest.

Respectfully,

David

RE: Displaying Comics

I'm super paranoid with my comics. One of my friends gives me the gears for not having them hanging up on my wall, but he just doesn't get it. Evil UV rays are lurking around every corner and I've also read some horror stories of peoples comics getting stolen. The only option for me is to keep them in Mylites and store them in a locked cabinet. I've taken pictures of all my comics and keep a gallery on my website. Click my signature to check it out.

Don't hang them up dude. Maybe thats just me, but I don't see them as art (as beautiful as they might be) but more so irreplaceable antiquity.

RE: Displaying Comics

Thanks Argus!

I will look into those Mylites tomorrow! The frames are just the cheapest document frames I could find that didn't have an actual border.

I actually have 2 rows of them now along one wall of my comic room (over where the flowers are), and there are quite a few put up in my son's room and a couple sub-mariners in his bathroom. All the ones up in those rooms were ones he picked out himself.

(Luckily I didn't let him pick out of my 'adult' comic boxes. ;) )

I've thought about looking for UV filtering plexi and putting it in front of my slabs and them putting them up on the plate hangers, but I am not sure how much the UV plexi would cost. You can buy mylar that DOES filter UV rays, BTW. You actually could then just hang the actual comic.

RE: Displaying Comics

Argus!

Your room is quite nice indeed. Speedy-D mentioned scans as well. Your framed scans certainly give a most convincing argument for doing such a thing. Yes indeed. I think that I would rather have a case, or shelf maybe for CGC graded pieces. Those scans sure are the bees knees; did you swing those yourself, or might they have been professionally rendered? Thank you for your reply Argus.

Respectfully,

David

RE: Displaying Comics

Speedy-D,

I do understand. I tire of extricating my comics from the boxes when my mates pop over, so that they can snag a proper gander. I dream of setting up my Silver-Age Showcase 1st appearances, and my Silver-Age #1's on a proper shelf, and possibly using the wall behind it to display, in connecting mylar sleeves of some sort, my Golden Age, and Silver Age key issues and pieces of interest. However, as some of my comics are not yet CGC graded (I am not sure I want to, I like being able to put my hands on history as it were), I do not want to risk any deterioration. Yet, upon viewing some of the amazing rooms that I saw on this forum, I am most tempted to risk it. It must be wonderful to pop into a spot and enjoy the view of your collection. If anyone else has any ideas, I am open. Thanks for your reply Speedy-D. :discuss:

Respectfully,

David

RE: Displaying Comics

I use high res scans and have them framed....I only put up scans of my actual comics, so I sort of feel I am hanging "the real thing". (BTW, there has been some work done in the room since the picture...the floral border is gone.)

And for a slabbed comic:

I don't actually have that IM #1 hung up, I did it just for illustration. I used a large plate hanger you can get at any hobby supply store.

Speedy is right, no UV protection in the slab. I have several slabs I want to put up, but I haven't decided the best way yet.

RE: Displaying Comics

I wonder the same thing, and haven't found a fantastic answer yet. I have a nice looking Flash 105 I'd definitely hang up if I learned of a good way. Some folks put up scans of their comics rather than the comic itself, but I'd want to show the real thing. I guess hanging it on a wall that doesn't get direct sunlight would be a good start.

As I understand it, the CGC case has no UV protection.

Displaying Comics

Hello Gents and Ladies,

I am looking for any suggestions for displaying my vintage comics. My heart has sunken into total abject jealousy (smile) over some of the amazing Comics Rooms (you can see for yourself here: http://www.comicspriceguide.com/boards/Topic22-20-1.aspx) I saw on this forum. I would really like to display mine too, but I have always feared damage from light sources and the like. Right now, my CGC'ed comics are in a cool darkened closet and my other vintage comics are stored upright in comics boxes. I really would like to have them on display. Are there any suggestions that might help me to overcome this obstacle? Or maybe I should just leave them as they are? What say you? :discuss: Thank you.

Respectfully,

David
