I believe that I'm dumping the file cabinet idea and going back to the short boxes.
The file cabinets are very costly and heavier when compared to the regular white short boxes.
I have decided that the file cabinets become way too heavy over time and are too hard to move.
If you want to move the file cabinet you have to unload it before it can be moved. So you're going to have to put the books into boxes while you move the cabinet anyway.
It's much easier to move short boxes around.
I think that I'm just going to build some shelving that will hold the short boxes once I get out of where I'm living right now.
The file cabinets are just not working for me.

Anyone close to Indiana want some 4-drawer lateral file cabinets? :hehe: I have three of them.

Thanks for the pics and setup Rocket. I have about 20,000 books on simple shelving in one of my spare bedrooms. Darn things take up the whole room but I like the file cabinets better. Really nice...

I am seriously planning to buy a file cabinet, my rooms is starting to be a real mess... And I did a search and it seems the standard drawer size here in Europe is 37cm large. I mean the actual space you can use is 37cm. Now, current comics with bag are 17.8cm large, and I can make two raw per drawer including a separator. But SA comics are 18.5cm large, that means I have almost no room for two raw in a single drawer. Can you translate the measure of your file cabinet from Inches to Cm?

I have switched from the long 2 rows back to the front facing rows on lateral cabinets. It's just easier to find and file books this way for me.

Thank you so much [b]ckillian[/b]. They are very time consuming to get set up, but I'm really happy with the way they came out. However, I'm not very excited about the thought of having to figure out a way to move them when the time comes.

I was able to get mine for the great price of ............ nothing. ;)

The company that I work for bought another company out, and they had all kinds of extra furniture laying around. I was able to pick up three cabinets that look just like the one in my pictures. The fourth one has the same amount of drawers plus an extra storage are on top.

I bought mine at a used office furniture store. Live in a depressed area and there are plenty of companies closing who have such stuff for sale.

Check newspaper classified ads for office furniture... I was able to get a 5-drawer lateral cabinet for $50... perfect shape... will be posting pics of my new 'room' soon...

I have finally started working on getting my file cabinets set up....... 'bout time. It seems like it's taken me forever to get around to this (probably because it really has). I'm going to post some pictures and a slightly-detailed description of what I did.

First I used Easy-Fold Mailers to line the sides of each drawer. Below is an example of what I'm talking about.

I'm not really sure what size I used. I will figure that out later and edit this post with the exact dimensions. These mailers can be bought off a supply website like Uline.com. [url="http://www.uline.com/BL_1304/Jumbo-Kraft-Easy-Fold-Mailers"]Jumbo Kraft Easy-Fold Mailers[/url]. I prefer to use the white ones instead of the brown. I really like using these because they already have lines that you can easily use to bend the cardboard.

I cut off the two shorter sides of each mailer and lined the drawers all the way around like this:

I wanted each drawer to resemble a comic storage box.

I then lined each of the drawers with Silver Age sized backing boards. I made sure to leave the glossy side up. I just used regular Scotch tape to hold them in place. I also left a bit of room up the middle of the drawer. This is where the foamboard will go later.

The next step is the easiest......take your books and start filling the drawers like so:

Pictured is 4 stuffed short boxes full of bagged and boarded comics. I left room on each side of the drawers to make room for additions that come every month. I still need to put the foamboard down the middle of the drawer. I wasn't able to do this yet because I couldn't find my tape measure. This will probably be completed over the weekend. Still have WAY too many boxes to unload into the drawers. I have four of these file cabinets waiting for books. Three of them are just like the one pictured. The fourth one actually has an extra storage compartment on the top of it that slides open. It's pretty sweet. I'm going to use that space to store all of my bags and boards.

This is the first time that I've ever used anything besides the regular comic storage boxes to store comics in. I must say that I already like this way much better than picking up and moving box after box to move different books around or to look for a particular issue. Sure these file cabinets already weigh alot when they are empty, and they will weigh a whole lot more when they are full. If you plan on using file cabinets for storage, just make sure that you place them somewhere that you know will work. You don't want to have to try and move them around all the time.

I'm just now getting around to setting up my file cabinets. It's been a long time coming. There have been many things come up recently that has caused me to fall behind on doing this. I'm pretty much lining each of the drawers to make them look like the cardboard equivalents with some foamcore boards down the middle. I need to hit up my LCS this evening and pick up some backing boards to line the bottom of the drawers with. I figure that they will be easier to cut than a bigger piece of poster board. I will also be able to get a higher-grad material than the poster board.

I'm planning on posting some pictures once a get a drawer completed and filled.

Hey Guys -- I just upped my account to premium and even though I've checked values here on a regular basis (and even made up my own grading matrix formula spreadsheet based on CPG's guide), I haven't really poked around the forums and whatnot until the last day or so.

My girlfriend and I just bought a house together, with a basement that we are going to finish off ourselves. Since we are both into comic collecting, one of our plans is to have the basement include a secret room hidden behind a swinging bookcase (sweet.) Among other things, inside that room will be our comic collection in file cabinets (shown below).

I would definitely recommend going the cabinet route if you have the means, although I would strongly suggest to find them on eBay or similar. I was able to buy 6 legal-sized (wider) cabinets for $175 total -- from an ebay auction that I picked up locally. Especially in today's economy, more and more liquidations will be popping up.

Here is a shot of 4 of the 6...

Each drawer holds the equivalent of around 3 short boxes

Most craft stores (Michaels, AC Moore, etc) sells 1/4in. foamcore boards that can be cut in half and trimmed to wedge in the drawers securely without the need of any tape or fasteners.

Good Luck to you all, I'll keep you posted on the progress of the secret room if you're interested:) Also, I'll post the "Grading Matrix Sheet" I print out for when I go to the shops, but that will be in a more relevant thread.
