And i hate The Legion!

The thing that drew me to buy it was the involvement of Superboy Prime ...and i wasnt disappointed...even though i still am not a big fan of LoSH...I liked the 1st issue. I like how it gave backstory...while still moving forward...it never went stagnent at any point...and flowed very smoothly...
Cant wait for next issue.

RE: Final Crisis Thoughts and Impressions

Final Crisis...i can understand not buying....but Rogues Revenge!!!! Was I the only one who seemed to think there were jumps in the story? Not a lot mind you but just enough to make me wonder if i skipped a page or something was told in a spin off book and skipped in tis mini. Maybe I'm feeling so let down that I'm getting biased. I keep reading about how big the ending is suposed to be. I find it hard not to keep buying this but may not if 4 isn't better

RE: Final Crisis Thoughts and Impressions

With each issue I think.. "Surely this issue will tie things together and make me want to continue reading", and yet at the end of each issue I find myself thinking.. "What the hell was that?!" and leaving disappointed. Issue #3 had particular credence as it ends with an advertisement telling you to pick up 3 other books outside of the mini itself just to know what the hell is going on. Gotta say this is a HUGE letdown for me, I simply have expected better from DC. This sure looks like DC is returning to it's old pre Identity Crisis days where I could care less about whats going on. Looks like it's only Green Lantern for me from now on.

RE: Final Crisis Thoughts and Impressions

I love this review..

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=user_review&id=280

specially this part...

They're not superheroes anymore, not in any way that can really make a difference. With that said... I love the connections of every last major event that lead to "Infinite Crisis" to "52" and that also has "Countdown" and all its tie-ins (yes... even "Death of the New Gods") relate to the on-going "Final Crisis"!

P.S. I would love to also discuss and teach why you should disreguard Grant Morrison and Dan Didio "crack-pot" arguement of "Whos to blame to so called continuity issues?"... all you have to do is ask and I shall provide you with the knowledge!

RE: Final Crisis Thoughts and Impressions

I really wanted to get into Final Crisis but it seems like a mess already. Talk about a Crisis (compared to Marvel at least)!

Seriously though, What Morrison has to say about Countdown in that newsarama interview ... it's ridiculous. The thing was called "Countdown to Final Crisis" for god's sake. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a bit of continuity in there. And DC these days is so continuity driven, with so many obscure things (unsourced of course, where's Julie Schwartz when you need him?), there's no way they can just sweep this under the rug by saying "it's comics. Don't sweat the continuity, it doesn't matter." Ugh, it's super annoying!

RE: Final Crisis Thoughts and Impressions

Not to sound dumb, but I don't get what the point of the Final Crisis is? I'm unable to get to the shop the Wednesday it came out, but as I was home that night I started getting the shakes. I finally make it in that Thursday and get both covers. I rush home, read the first issue and almost die from how underwhelmed I was. I mean, we don't even know what the threat is. At least Secret Invasion #1 ended with tons of action and a clear visual of what the threat will be for the next half-year.

I usually reserve judgment on these things until we get the full picture/story/series, so that's what I'll be doing here. I just pray to the New Gods that Morrison knows what he's doing and this gets better.

RE: Final Crisis Thoughts and Impressions

I'm sorry to say. DC is not adult driven stories..they tell the same stories that Marvel does.... they just have a different way to beat around the bush to get to the point....Marvel does this too...but not to the point that DC does....everything drags out for so long that people lose intrest. 52,Countdown, (the upcomming) Trinity...........it will take another year of badly written substories shoved into 1 book a week..to get to the next major event...

52 was decent...Countdown could have been told with less issues, the only thing i followed in that was the fates of Piper and Trickster...that substory was really well done.....but other than that....the books didnt really have anything to do with "Final Crisis" till they put the words on the cover...other than that it was a loooooooooong drawn out collection of events...some of which didnt even need to be told, but they needed filler ...at least thats what it felt like reading them.

And as for "Martian Manhunter's Death".....................I really didnt find myself caring at all. He has always been pushed as a B-list chracter...Only durring the WWIII thing did he have anything to do...and even then...I was still underwhelmed by his development......he "used to be" an important character many moons ago...but by the time he got to "Final Crisis" #1....It just wasnt that big a deal......I still say they should have killed him off at the begining of "Infinite Crisis" when Superboy first attacked the Watchtower..then it would have been something to talk about....but here he was held down....and speared thru the chest...put down like a dog instead of going out as a hero.....more for shock value that didnt really shock anyone.

All that rambling.............and i get back to the thread focus.....I will give it a few more issues...but if i am as bored reading them as i was issue #1....sigh....i will drop it and wont bother with Trinity when it hits, and that will be hard to do as i wanted to see Bagley's DC art. :crying:

Edit:
Please Note.
JUST MY OPINION! :D

RE: Final Crisis Thoughts and Impressions
Remote_kill (6/4/2008)
Anyways....

I just FINALLY read it, and....what the hell?..I seem to be the only one looking forward to whats to come..heh. Oh well.

I wasn't confused by any of it really. I read all of 52 though, and some of the Death of the new Gods stuff, not even all of it, and i ONLY just really got into DC last year, and I understood what was going on.

People need to start understanding that DC's books are way deeper than Marvels. Marvel has a lot of people spoiled with their straight out written plots detailed for little kids pretty much. DC is more of an adult driven universe, and i love it that way. Gives more fulfillment and makes for more thinking.

People hate on Morrison, But I like his writing. Sure he jumps around a lot, but it all ends up coming together into something special in the end. Much like Batman RIP is turning into doing..

I'm not even a fan of The Martian, but i was still at AWE when I saw a flame through his chest.

I'm on this book for the long run. DC knows what they're doing. The first book would of got a serious over haul if they didn't already know what was coming with the later books. So I'm looking forward to it.
Well, if DC can instill this much faith in a reader then they must be doing something right! I'll just say this: Final Crisis #1 came out; many read it; many were lost; and many of those many are considering skipping the rest of the series, or giving it one more chance at best. This is not success.

Also, as far as I'm concerned, the fault is not Morrison's. It's the editor who's ultimately responsible for this sort of problem.

RE: Final Crisis Thoughts and Impressions

Anyways....

I just FINALLY read it, and....what the hell?..I seem to be the only one looking forward to whats to come..heh. However the problem I have, as well as most others have, is that while that was meant to be the big shocker event of issue #1, it was pushed off as a back story piece, and didn't hardly have any recognition whatsoever. Even the art was unspectacular for such an event. I know this isn't he 90's anymore, so full page spreads are pretty much unheard of, but if we're going to treat J'onns death as a back up piece, then it should at least have a final full page spread showing as much anguish as possible to leave the readers feeling the pain he feels. Instead we get a small cramped page with little flow, and as far as I'm concerned bad art and even worse story. I think that J'onn's death was quite possibly the worst handled death of a hero that I've ever seen.
As for Seven soliders or whatever the hell the mini is called... We shouldn't have to read it to know whats going on. A good "Universe Changing" event has always been contained within it's own 6, 7, or 12 issues. Their are always tie ins that flesh out the event more, and of course there will be a truckload of material that happens before the event to build hype and anticipation, however with every other arc I can think of, all of that extra wasn't necessary for the actual story to make sense. House of M, Civil War, Identity Crisis, Infinite Crisis, Crisis on Infinite Earths, etc., all made sense by just reading the core issues, however final crisis does not, and even worse, picks parts of DC's history that people really don't care about. Does anyone, or for that matter, has anyone, ever cared about the New Gods? No. They've always been small bit players in the DCU, and focusing a major event around them is stupid. Starting off Slow is one thing, I remember reading posts about Infinite Crisis where people questioned the flow of the story, same with several marvel stories, however I can't remember an arc where people were outright disappointed and willing to drop a story after a single issue.

Bottom line here is that DC messed up the launch of their big summer event, and unless issue #2 see's much MUCH better story pacing, and improvement in the art department, this will be a HUGE letdown for DC fans.
Agreed, this has nothing to do with being a fair weather fan. It has everything to do with how Morrison wanted to tell a story.
You want to kill a main character, create the suspense. Where was it here? It wasn't. It was a "drive by" without any peril, any danger and any chance for the reader to emotionally connect with the possibility of a characters death. I had to look at that page thre times to really see if they killed the character.
I get it, really. Sometimes a writer wants to just show how radom life can be. Steven King takes 100 pages to develop a character and kills them in one sentence. If DC wanted the wow factor, this approach is not always desirable.
Seven Soldiers, Wolfie? Gimme a break. They have not been a factor in the DC Universe in years and even if something happens, then fricken recap it.
Anyone check the DC boards? Yeah, we all tend to be critical but we had to have an explanation of what happened because not only was this not accesible to new readers, even long term readers were confused.
I believe this will get better. I think this still will be the wow factor of the summer. But Morrison is hit or miss with his story telling. All Star Supes is amazing. This one however was a big miss, not for the content but for the layout and the story.

RE: Final Crisis Thoughts and Impressions

I still haven't read: Infinite Crisis or 52, even though I bought them all... stopped buying when Countdown came out and havent bought Final Crisis. You ask the question as if it were required reading or something.

I'm with you on the full ride I think, unless it just gets worser & worser still. But my problem was not with the slow beginning, it was with the amount of difficulty I had in following it. At the end I basically had no idea what I'd just read. As one of those people who's coming to this without the past 20 years of DC history at his fingertips, I just didn't know who some of the seemingly main characters were. As some of the reviews of this issue have stated, just some very short expository captions would have gone a real long way. I mean, in your post you mention over 100 issues of two weekly comics that have been published over the past 100+ weeks, and who-knows-how-many issues of Seven Soldiers. That's a lot to expect everyone to have read in order to understand the first issue of a series, no?

I've picked up a couple (only a couple!!) Marvel comics lately, and they've all had these great little opening paragraphs, telling me in very broad strokes what's been going on. I can't tell you how helpful they've been.

It's obvious that comics are now quite different from when I was last a reader, in the mid-eighties. Every issue is part of a longer story, sometimes eight issues long or more, and even the longer stories have elements that run from one to the next. It takes a very good writer to pull this off, and still allow for new readers to jump on board and understand enough to stick around. With a comic like Final Crisis #1, supposedly a huge event that they'd like to get as many readers on as possible, they have to do something for sad sacks like myself, who just don't know the history or have never heard of some of the characters. Like, who the heck was that detective that talked to female Question, who called everyone "muk muk?" I've never heard of him before...

I know it's a totally unfair comparison, but while I was reading Final Crisis, I kept thinking of Watchmen. I of course had no idea who any of the characters were in that when I first read the first issue, but it was handled in such a way that I could get through it, enjoy it, and want to know more. Granted, it's like the best comic ever, but still, I'm just saying it can be done, and it can be done really well too!

RE: Final Crisis Thoughts and Impressions

For those like me who were a bit confused there was this good summary on the DCU boards...

dangerdrventure

EVERYONE CONFUSED ABOUT FINAL CRISIS, LOOK HERE
Posted: May 30, 2008 8:51 PM

Reply

I'm noticing alot of people who mostly forgot or ignored the stories in Countdown and Death of the New Gods who are now confused by the story implications in Final Crisis.

I don't blame you for forgetting Countdown or dropping it halfway through, but let's just get this out there now so we can stop making issues of it.

The Orion in Final Crisis 1 is NOT the same state of being we saw wander off in Countdown 1. This Orion is the newborn version.

In Death of the New Gods, The Source explained that the Gods of the third world plotted against him and attacked him, splitting his essense into a dark and light half. The Source created the 52 realities in an attempt to filter out the strength of the anti-life equation so he could absorb it and be whole again. In order to do this, he had to reclaim the souls of his New Gods to empower his light half.

The Source explains that his New Gods of science, of the fourth world, were flawed and petty due to him being only at half essense. They turned out hardly better than mortals, constantly warring and killing eachother. They were NOT what The Source intended to create after his previous ages of Gods were such failures as well.

While 'killing' his Gods, his intentions were to reclaim his dark half and then restore his chosen Gods back to life in a fifth world. The Source succeeds by provoking Scott Free, an avatar of the anti-life equation, against his Infinity Man, the avatar of the forces of light. The result was shattering of the source wall and a reborn Source. The clashing of the two cosmic elements allowed The Source to fully restore himself. The Source then brought Orion back to life and had him destroy his father, who had fled to Earth to claim his souls from Jimmy's body. Ray Palmer disables the device, releasing the souls, and Darkseid is obliterated by Orion, still burning from The Source's influence.

DCU#0 Shows events where Darkseid falls from the heavens, reborn through fire. He has just won the war against good in the afterlife and returned, taking human form.

At the end of Death of the New Gods, we saw The Source take the remains of New Genesis and Apokolips and merge them into a protoworld that would become the Fifth world.

In Final Crisis 1, we are now seeing these reborn New Gods, the ones chosen by The Source for his fifth world.

So far, they are:
The Black Racer, wearing dragonesque armor
Orion, wearing gold wiring on his uniform to replace his cosmic harness
Metron, now a being of shining silver
Godfrey Goode, reborn as a black minister

The rejected gods are those of Darkseid. They have taken human form on Earth due to Darkseid having won against the forces of Good. They are NOT New Gods at this point, but are something less. If Darkseid can take control from The Source, he can restore his family to Godhood again.

The reason Orion's murder is such a big deal in Final Crisis is because this IS a murder. The Source reclaiming their souls was not. This is the reborn Orion, the one chosen as the leader of his people. These new gods are not colorful super heroes, but are Gods, perhaps even menacing in their new perfected nature. Imagine what would happen if Zeus visited our reality and were killed by someone. I imagine the other Gods would have something to say about it. Harsh retribution, just like when man crucified Jesus Christ. Just keep in mind that this story takes place some time after Death of the New Gods and Countdown, and the Gods we are now seeing are NOTHING like their previous incarnations. These are ideal perfect entities and they are higher than you. They aren't Justice League members in circus costumes.

The reason the guardians placed a barrier around New Earth is because of 1011. Deicide. The murder of a diety. The Guardians are aware that the reborn New Gods are not way they used to be. They are the Gods of reality now. They also know that New Earth, as stated by the Monitors, is the lynchpin in which the multiverse relies. If the Gods ravage this place, the multiverse will colapse with it. It is imperative that they protect New Earth and try to solve the crime, or the New Gods will storm this world and lay waste to it.

Superman's behaviour in Final Crisis 1:
Alot of you are confused by Clark's behaviour in Final Crisis 1. Clark is the first mortal to truly see The Source. This is the point that Clark realized these are Gods and not superheroes from a futuristic planet. What Clark witnessed was a small-scale Armageddon. To inform the JLA and correct their perception of the New Gods was necessary. When they think of New Gods, much like the fans, they see Scott in his circus costume and his giant wife, and Orion with his temper problems beating up villains. They don't understand what the New Gods are/will become, but Clark does. The Source told him personally. Clark is a witness.

One of the key points in Final Crisis is to show the reader that the New Gods are no longer Kirby's colorful collection. They are terrifying. This is also what Clark is trying to convey to the other characters, as he learned during his trip to New Genesis.

RE: Final Crisis Thoughts and Impressions

As always...you guys are about as fairweather as Los Angeles sports fans...

I'm sorry, did any of you read Seven Soldiers?

Do you not remember the Mister Miracle portion of that story?
