This year's birthday present

I turn 36 on August 24 and, like the last three or four years, my wife has told me to buy whatever art I want for a certain amount. So, after years and years of searching, I finally found three pages from my all-time favorite Iron Man story, when Tony Stark falls off the wagon and gives the armor to James Rhodes. These three pages are from Iron Man 170, the second part of the story. They're by Luke McDonnell and Steve Mitchell and are on their way, but I thought I'd let everyone see how awesome this birthday present truly is.

Dream Visit to John Byrne's Home and Shanna Sketch!

Haven't posted to the new board until now, however, I'm still having trouble believing that I visited the home of John Byrne after attending the San Diego Comic Con this year! Thanks to good mate Jim Warden (John Byrne's original art dealer), he arranged for us to visit John's home where I spent some hours exploring his amazing residence and the incredible collectibles therein. After the visit, we had lunch at a local restaurant and I had an opportunity to listen to a comic industry legend reminisce.

John was a gracious, charming and entertaining host who seemed pleased to show a long-distance visitor around his home. I was in awe of John's life-size statues of Darth Vader, Predator, NASA astronaut suit with Alien face hugger attached, C3-PIO, Robbie the Robot and Gort along with a plethora of statues, busts, original comic art (Wrightson Swamp Thing page, Neal Adams Batman pages, Jack Kirby FF pages, etc.) and more!

To cap off the visit, Jim mentioned to John that it was my 50th birthday year to which John responded by asking if I'd like a sketch. I managed to croak out "yes please" and he created a sweet Shanna the She-Devil sketch for me. I've attached a photo of John and me with the sketch and a separate one of the sketch -

San Diego Comic Con 2008 Photos and Artwork!

I had the most amazing time at San Diego Comic Con this year due largely to the company of good mates including Bryan Hitch, Rich DeDominicis, Andrew Currie, Steve Morger, Ben Templesmith, Howard Chaykin, Kelvin Mao, Felix Lu and many more.

original comic art values

Anyone know how to go about finding ballpark values for original pages? I'd imagine there's a lot of variation of values, even within an issue, based on whether the hero's on the page, in costume, doing something cool, etc. I've seen a few listings of later Infantino Flash pages that seem to hover at around $200, which I suppose is the best way to get values. But are there guides? Sites with sales figures over the past couple years, anything like that?

Well, the Dallas Comic Con was this weekend for the first time oddly enough I didn't buy a single book. Not that I didn't want to, I just didn't have the time to look at too many between running tables, checking on a friend that was helping with the tables, checking on artists that I helped bring to the con, and checking with artists on status of my sketch books. Needless to say I did a lot of back and forth running around and I'm pooped but I did manage to get everything scanned in to show everyone.

First up, original art from various artists and books.
This is the first time I've really actively bought original pages basically because I found something cool about the page that I liked even if I hadn't ever heard of the book and the prices seemed reasonable.

That original art is getting ridiculously expensive?

I collect mainly Batman related art, and there are pieces done by "average Joe" artists that originally went for $30-$50 are now going for $90-$125???? These pieces will BARELY have Batman on them or even a supporting character like Robin or Nightwing.

I can understand a Bernie Wrightson page from "Batman: The Cult" going for hundreds of dollars, but now there are pages with nothing more than random skyline shots of Gotham city with a head-shot of Alfred in the last panel going for over $80.

WTF?

Another thing I've noticed... Where is all the original Batgirl comic art? I've been looking for a Barbara Gordon Batgirl page (either from Batman Family or a Detective Comics back-up) for YEARS now and I have seen a single page.

Every time I do a search for "batgirl", regardless of the site being searched, it is either a page from the modern Batgirl series (again, most ridiculously priced) or just some random artists convention sketch.

Again, WTF?

Is art becoming scarce? Do dealers have a large overhead of stock they can't unload? Or is the market now being driven by speculators?

She started drawing some stuff, and I found myself picking up the pen and I couldn't put it down, and this is what I came up with.

I like the idea of the ComicArtCollective, but it's mostly sold out, doesn't seem updated and the guy behind it is non responsive.
Think anyone will be selling any at the NYComicCon?
Also, looking for recommendations of where best to read/see and find out about new art/artists of the offbeat vein ;)

New Tony Dezuniga Commissioned piece

After meeting Tony and his wife Tina at the Dallas Comic Con in January I went ahead and set up a commission with him.

The reference pic was a picture I had taken of my wife with the some of the painted ladies at the Playboy Midsummer Nights Dream party that we went to last August.

The middle area is a little blurry from me merging 4 different scans together as the piece is rather larger. It's definitely bigger than the Red Sonja sketches he did for me in January
