Questions from a new collector

Hello fellow forum members,

I have recently purchased my first original comic art page from a charity auction. In my brief searches on the Internet I can find many sites that show and sell original comic art. What I have not found is a primer guide toward collecting of original comic art. I understand the base size of original comic art is 11 x 17 bristol art boards (there may be slight differences in size from publisher and artists). Some original comic art may include sketches, doodles and other miscellaneous additions on the back.

First topic questions is actual storage\protection of original comic art. What type of holder-display should be used? Is there any areas of concern with acid, u-v lighting or other harmful factors to prevent? Any suggestions on displaying original art with the actual final product of the original art (comic book, magazine, etc.)?

Second topic question, for those that have captured digital images of their original artwork. What methods and equipment was used? What common mistakes have been made and be avoided?

Well, the Dallas Comic Con was this weekend for the first time oddly enough I didn't buy a single book. Not that I didn't want to, I just didn't have the time to look at too many between running tables, checking on a friend that was helping with the tables, checking on artists that I helped bring to the con, and checking with artists on status of my sketch books. Needless to say I did a lot of back and forth running around and I'm pooped but I did manage to get everything scanned in to show everyone.

First up, original art from various artists and books.
This is the first time I've really actively bought original pages basically because I found something cool about the page that I liked even if I hadn't ever heard of the book and the prices seemed reasonable.

Not exactly comic book art, but pretty close. Not a new pickup, but the 1st time these pages have ever been shown online. :D

Captain Nice was a TV series in 1967, created by Buck Henry (co-creator of Get Smart, and straight man on several SNL Samuri skits.)

Topps test marketed a card set to go with the show. It was probably a 24 card set. The cards are hard to find.

Staff artist at Topps - Wally Wood did the artwork for the card backs. It's not his best work, but there's some parts that look like Wood art.

Here's my collection of 8 pieces of original art. The image area is approx 10"x7", which was colored and reduced to 2.5"x3.5" on the finished cards. I bought the art long ago, but still don't have any of the cards, got outbid on the two that I've seen.... still watching...

Card #1 - I know this is from #1 because The Topps Vault actioned a finished production card on eBay on 2/1/04. It sold for $315.00 + s&h

Spiderman Daily / Jim Amash

Bought this at Heroes Con from Jim Amash. I went for one of his cheaper pages because I was mainly just going for a representative piece of his art rather than collecting a Spiderman page. I'm not a huge Spiderman fan. Jim was an extremely nice guy and we talked about him meeting Larry Lieber and stuff like that.

No matter how you slice it, Dave Cockrum is a legend for what he did with redesigning the X-Men. Granted, this isn't the X-men, but it's nice to have samples of art from the people who made a big name of themselves in the industry.

Anyone know if this Witchblade sketch is the one I am thinking of?

I remember in 1996, there was a promotion at Windy City where you got a free Witchblade Sketch. It had something to do with variants of Witchblade #10 and if you bought enough of them and waited in line, you were entered to win a Witchblade Sketch. It was a sketch of a page in Cyblade/Shi where Witchblade made her first appearance. I was entered, but some other kid won it.

Anyway, I found a sketch on eBay that looks like that one, and it is dated in 1996, which was the right time (I think it was November of 1996). Also, the seller is from Chicago, so everything fits, but in the description it says it was bought in 1997? Does anyone know if this is the sketch? Here's the eBay page:

I've never been a huge buyer of original art. I hadn't been to a convention since probably 1985 or something like that, so the opportunities weren't frequent. Anyway, I went to the New York Convention this weekend planning to get something from Carmine Infantino. He's pretty old and can't do much before his hands start hurting, so he limited himself to headshots. Needless to say I got one. It was just about as great as it gets to stand there and watch my favorite artist draw my favorite character. He made these huge broad confident strokes, one after another, it probably only took him 45 seconds or a minute, and it was a total Carmine Infantino Flash. It's my prize possession. I tried to get him to do something more for me, but he was hesitant, finally admitting that his hands were just hurting too much. O well, the headshot is great, I love it.

I was walking down the aisle of artists and saw Herb Trimpe. I remembered that Mo Fun had just put up a pic of a Hulk drawings he got from him, so I stopped by. He had some great looking drawing sitting there, so on a whim I asked him if he could draw a picture of the Hulk fighting Wolverine, and he said Sure, come get it tomorrow. Walking away from him, I ran across Rich Buckler, who did a bunch of Flash work in the 70's. So I commissioned another one from him, also to be picked up the next day.

I went back and got my Herb Trimpe Hulk vs. Wolverine today. Buckler had penciled the Flash picture, but he said if I stuck around he'd ink it for me. So I stood there and watched him ink the thing, it was very cool. I'd say he probably hasn't thought about the Flash for a while, 'cuz he got the costume a little wrong! But whatever, I still love it.

Anyway, it was a great time, money well spent, and here are the pictures:

Well years later, I get a chance to meet him at Baltimore Comic Con 08. He was so nice and the poor guy was sketching his butt off on an empty stomach. Help identifying artists of Marvel Masterpieces Sketch Cards

I got this in the mail today, from eBay for $50. It's my first Carmine Infantino art, and I couldn't be happier. It's page 3 of The Flash #339, featuring Big Sir, who I've always hated. I mean, Big Sir is about as lame as it gets. But this page looks fantastic in my hands. I only wish I had the loot to buy some more. It costs about 3x as much to get a similar page that includes The Flash himself.

What to do with it now? Should I frame it? Or just carry it around with me wherever I go? I'm tempted toward the latter. :)

New Howard Chaykin Additions!

Just received my latest art purchase in the mail this week and purchased another on ebay which has yet to arrive - both pieces are painted pages by one of my personal idols, Howard Chaykin.

Both pieces help to achieve 2/3 of my goal to acquire a good example from each of my fave Howard Chaykin creations (Dominic Fortune and Cody Starbuck), now I only need a decent page from American Flagg and I'm working on that :)

I had the privilege of meeting Howard in person at a con in my hometown and again at San Diego this year and got to spend some quality time with him at dinners and other social events. It was a huge thrill and I hope to see him again next year!

Please, some advice on this price

I'm 100% new to the original art market. I've gotten quotes for a piece by Carmine Infantino, my favorite comics artist. For an 18x24 pen & ink work, of my choosing, I'd have to shell out $900. For a similarly sized full color piece it'd be $1,900. Also $1,900 for a color reproduction of any cover my choosing.

Is this reasonable? I really don't have any proper frame of reference.

Also, this quote is coming from someone at [url=http://www.allstarauc.com]All-Star Auctions[/url], claiming to represent Mr. Infantino. Again, I have no way of knowing if they're legit, but they seem to be. Are they well known?

I really appreciate any advice/insight. I could maybe convince myself to shell out the loot if it's a reasonable amount, and on the up & up. Something really beautiful from Carmine Infantino would mean the world to me.

He's going to be at the NY Convention this year, so I'll probably wait until then anyways, and talk to him personally. But I'd love to go into the conversation with a better understanding of the market.

Oo, one more thing: is 18x24 big? $900 sounds like a lot of money to me, and I was thinking maybe I'm asking for some non-standard size. If so, what's a more standard size?

I recently won an auction for a really fun piece of OA but haven't been able to get word one from the seller. Anyone know Rick Ketcham?

He's been in the industry long enough I thought someone may know him. Was hoping to find if there was an illness or family emergency.

Regardless, I'm looking forward to this fun little addition to the collection.

For those who are familiar with the work of New Zealand-born comic artist and illustrator, Colin Wilson, I would like to announce that I’m assisting Colin with the sale of his original comic art including artwork from 2000AD, Losers (DC/Vertigo), Battler Britton (Wildstorm), Point Blank (Wildstorm), Star Wars (Dark Horse) and other projects. Colin has also worked extensively for European publishers including a number of “Young Blueberry” albums (character co-created by Jean “Moebius” Giraud) for the French market.

Pricing is as marked for each page with the cost of air mail postage to (for example) the USA working out to $35.00 (insurance will cost extra). Air mail usually takes between 7-10 working days between Australia and the USA. Postage costs to other parts of the world will likely be a similar cost to that quoted for the USA. Payment by Paypal is preferred and can be made to roydster@yahoo.com which can also be used to contact me regarding orders.

Artwork will be securely packaged using sturdy materials (mdf board or foam core board) and plastic bags.

If you are after a specific page from any of the above-mentioned series which is not currently listed/displayed for sale, please contact me and I will check its availability and confirm with Colin. Please note that Colin has available a large number of pages from his Judge Dredd and Rogue Trooper stories for 2000AD (including complete stories). If you know the “Prog” number and page number of the story, I can see if it is available. These pages will most likely be in Colin’s possession and will take a little time to process so your patience is appreciated.

I hope to eventually offer a number of pages from Colin’s Star Wars books and will make an announcement regarding those pages once they become available. Colin is also considering parting with his Blueberry and other work from European publishers so let me know if you have any interest in such work.

Please note that Colin is not accepting commission requests at this time although he will be sketching at Australian con appearances such as Supanova (Melbourne) in March 2009. I'm not the best by far, but my wife can draw very well, so I bought her some supplies the other day.

She started drawing some stuff, and I found myself picking up the pen and I couldn't put it down, and this is what I came up with.

Ebay: Adam Hughes & Karl Story Abe Sapien Illustration!

Most know me as a dedicated and long-time Adam Hughes fan who has never parted with any AH! piece from my collection. However, in an effort to raise some funds for a new art purchase, I'm parting with this fabulous Abe Sapien (Hellboy's BPRD team-mate) from my collection.

Originally an ebay purchase, this delightful Abe Sapien illustration is beautifully pencilled by Adam and impressively inked by his former Gaijin Studios team-mate, Karl Story.

Adam Warren (1996) Sketchbook and Frank Cho (2001) Sketchbook on Ebay!

Hope no-one minds my mentioning a couple of ebay auctions I currently have running :) I'm hoping there'll be some interest in my first ever ebay auction (I've previously listed items via friends) in the shape of the

Here's my description of the item:

"One of the earliest and hardest to find comic art sketchbooks is the "Adam Warren Sketchbook" (or The Bio-Hazard Project December 1996) released at the winter 1996 Comic Market in Tokyo. Adam is a highly talented comic artist who has worked for Dark Horse, DC, Marvel and other companies and has a long association as writer/artist of the "Dirty Pair" book.

Long out of print, this sketchbook is 131 pages in length and approximately 7" x 10". It features numerous sketches, preliminary work, designs and roughs from Adam's work on Gen 13, Titans, Dirty Pair along with various dojinshi pieces! Condition is excellent (no bend in the spine) with a barely visible slight scuff mark on the bottom left of the front cover.

This hotly sought after sketchbook is not often seen on ebay so don't miss out on this chance to own an extremely rare item! Shipping will be arranged with the successful bidder but will be in the order of $15 - $20 for air mail postage and secure packaging."

Stunning Shanna the She-Devil Commission by Michael Lopez!

Hi All!

I arranged a Shanna commission with Wildstorm artist Michael Lopez a few months back and had arranged to collect it from him at San Diego Comic Con, however, he hadn't quite finished it so I had to wait a little longer - the wait was certainly worth it!

I should also mention Michael's incredibly generous gift to an Aussie fan in the shape of a Gen 13 published cover - I was stunned when he gave it to me at SDCC!

As for the Shanna piece, I did see the 2/3 finished commission at SDCC and was delighted with what I saw so I was anxious to see the final result. Well, Michael sent me a scan today and I'm absolutely thrilled with the finished piece!!

Comic Art Matting

Does anybody know what the technique is for matting original comic art? I am interested in buying a piece of art that "comes already matted", and I am wondering/afraid that the art is permanently glued to the mat.

Any ideas?

This year's birthday present

I turn 36 on August 24 and, like the last three or four years, my wife has told me to buy whatever art I want for a certain amount. So, after years and years of searching, I finally found three pages from my all-time favorite Iron Man story, when Tony Stark falls off the wagon and gives the armor to James Rhodes. These three pages are from Iron Man 170, the second part of the story. They're by Luke McDonnell and Steve Mitchell and are on their way, but I thought I'd let everyone see how awesome this birthday present truly is.
