What's up with the Guitar Hero III Mobile product placement going on in Marvel right now? At first I thought it was just an artist's choice in Punisher War Journal when it appeared in a pawn shop scene. Now I'm reading FF and one of Johnny's crew is wearing a T-shirt displaying it. Is that really necessary and is it going to become the norm? It certainly has gotten that way in movies now (You had to love the Dodge logo on the Fantasticar) but are comics next?

I would think so, product placement in video games is becoming commonplace just like movies so I would not be surprised to see it overtake comics. When game makers defended it originally they used the argument it was so they would be able to give consumers cheaper games, yet they are still $50 and $60 bucks.

As long as it's placed thoughtfully, it adds to the realism of the book/movie/video game, and thus I have no problem with it.  Believe it or not it probably is helping video game funding as games have reached multi-million dollar funding levels in many cases and as such have had to turn to other avenues to ensure that the games themselves can still be sold for $50-60.  If there werent any additional funding we'd either be paying $80 per game, or games themselves wouldn't continue progressing forward at the rate they have.  Like it or not advertising is here to stay, and personally I wish Comics would add in several more pages of advertisements (like magazines) so that comic prices could sit at 2.25 again.

It's a valid point Havok. I have a bad feeling that the comic book industry is hurting these days compared to its heyday. If a bit of product placement keeps the industry profitable I'm okay with it. We all dread the day when readship drops to sub 20k level and the industry truly collapses. I pray that never happens but if movies and vids are doing this to keep up their profits I'm okay with comics doing it here and there.

I just don't want to open a copy of Daredevil and see the guy taking a snack break and eating an OH HENRY!

This is like games...Burnout Paradise...When you play the game all the billboards will have ads which are from real shops....Some aren't when you live outside the USA but the majority are. It's funny playing the game online and seeing IF you have the same billboard ads as other players...Especially if you're both sitting next to the same one and the ad will be completely different.

I don't mind advertising so much within a comic...But the full page ads annoy me more...I'm finding they are taking up more space in the book and I feel like I'm getting interupted while I read...Maybe nitpicky but yeah that's just me.
