What I want to know is what is the third book that was stolen?  If it ranks along Action #1 and Dectective #27 it must be something similarly amazing, possibly one of a kind.

One again we have a person that doesn't actually read posts.

It was Marvel Mystery #71 (The Crippen copy)

When someone asked Stephen a question about what we are talking about here. This was the response.

Also, Stephen would know better than anyone about Cage's collecting habits as many of the books were either sold by or brokered with Metro

Quote:

A very sad story to hear.

So Stephen do you believe that this is one of the main reasons why Nic Cage left the hobby? I know if my best books were stolen, I'd probably feel the same way.

This very much deflated his balloon. And these were his 2 best books.

S

And he may be right, but what one believes doesn't necessarily make it fact. He states that is what he FEELS. This isn't a story about Area 52 or the 2nd shooter theory in the Kennedy assasination, it's a man who got rid of his comic book collection which isn't something conspiracy stories are going to be concocted over especially for something as goofy as attempting to demonize Presley. Of course when you have the man himself giving multiple versions of why he sold them it's going to raise speculation, but how many men come out and say they are p&$$y whipped? What men will do for the love of a woman. Here are reasons given by Cage in various interviews:

Reason 1. Well it's not a secret, I was robbed. Three of my best comics were robbed - and it was Action One, Detective 27 and Detective 14, and those books today would be worth, I don't know how much, more than the whole collection itself was at the time. And it occurred to me that I didn't want that in my house anymore because I didn't want that sort of temptation for people to do that so I sold everything.

Reason 2. I just felt I had my time with it and I had this period where I was downsizing. I didn't want to turn into Citizen Kane [laughs]. (never saw the movie so I have no idea what that quote is in reference too).

Reason 3. "I was getting to a place in my life where I didn't really want to worship false icons, so I was like, 'OK, they're great art and I love them, but I'm ready to move on.' "(whatever the hell that means, he is an interesting individual).

Reason 4. Cage says, "I refuse to be blackmailed. I'm choosing independence. I ditched all that stuff to please her - but she wants more. I should have stood up to her from the start. She didn't just want me, she wanted my soul."

On a couple different film sites (not comic fan sites) it's one of the reasons listed in his biography as to why he got divorced from Presley where it's brought up he was still angry about selling his collection because of her.

Keep in mind Sherlock, that we are talking about a "celebrity" here not some schmoe that happened to have a nice collection. Tabloid stories are always constantly written about them. I feel that if anyone is a reliable source it would be Stephen who was Cage's crack... err... comic dealer instead of some "biography" written about him on IMDB or elsewhere.

You really should see Citizen Kane. You'll probably like it. Buy the two disk set so you can see the real story behind the movie also.

I can see where all four reasons are legitimate to Cage; one spawning another or causing him to reflect; all four intermingling and depressing him and finally leading him to decide, "yeah, it's time to sell 'em."

His love for comics never disappeared, of course. His reasons for owning the comic books in the first place simply didn't survive.

Lisa Marie Presley is a good looking woman, but Nick Cage could have any damn girl he wants. All he needs to do is say "I'm Nick Cage. I'm disgustingly wealthy and I like comic books. If you have a problem with any of these 3 things then piss off."

Someone: "So I hear you collect Spider-Man comics."
Me: "Yep."
Someone: "Well I happen to have Amazing Spider-Man #92"
Me: "I have #1"
Someone: ".......oh."

It's those little victories that make life worth living.
