Hello
Haven't been on this forum in awhile so I had to register again. How are all ya doing?
This topic is about variant prices and who is wrong I guess. Mainly the Secret Invasion ones because there are so many of them so its an easy example. The store I go to sells variants for at most like $6.99. They get calls from other stores in the city telling them to increase their prices because they are losing business! I went to a store in my hometown and they had variants for like $20 which is nothing compared to conventions which are like $80. I just laugh and walk away when I hear those prices but anyways.
I love the idea of a $6.99 variant. And I think these other places are gouging because they know people will pay it. I consider myself lucky to be so close to such an affordable establishment who understands that economy and the comic business being filled with con artists.
Any of yall feel the same way?

I dont see it as gouging.
They order a certain amount to get the variant.
They can price it as they see fit to recoup the extra money that they spent on the extra issues to get it. (some places go a little bonkers IMO...but thats because they dont have the buisness to justify ordering the extra books to get the variant.)
The LCS that i go to just wants to get them out the door....I think the owner short changes himself...but im not going to complain  .
He prices them as such:
1:10 3.99 to 5.99
1:20 5.99 to 6.99
1:30 9.99
1:50 9.99 to 12.99
1:75 19.99 to 29.99
1:100 29.99 to 39.99
1:200 (missed on the on the UXM #500 sketch so im not sure but i would imagine it was around $60)
Hell i picked up 3 copies of the Hulk #2 B&W variant for $5.99 each from there (there was only supposed to be one at each store...and there were only 1,000 made)
I picked up the Wolverine 67b McNiven Sketch Cover today for $9.99.
And i have picked up all the Secret Invasion Variants and never paid over $40 for all 3 variants of any given issue of the series...
Only catch is...on the rare variants i have to be at the shop right after he opens....or i miss the book i want...i take lunch early on Wed. 
If he were to price like the other CS around the area....i wouldnt buy them.
It all just depends on the owner.

my lcs had all the secret invasion sketch variants for 50.00 each.
they had one xmen 500 1:200 and that one was 200 and sold in the first ten minutes.
so yeah they are a little high.

so yeah they are a little high."$200 for the sketch covers on Uncanny 500 is below market right now, so someone got a deal. I know the prices probably won't hold over time, but the sketch covers are routinely selling for $250+ on eBay. Sadly, 200 is a deal.

They get calls from other stores in the city telling them to increase their prices because they are losing business! Unethical and illegal. It violates anti-trust laws and can be considered price-fixing which is a civil crime that carries mandatory jail time.
Where does he get those wonderful toys!
I have yet begun to surrender.
