| Hi, I am just getting back into comics and have never sent a comic to be graded. My collection includes the #1 GL (1961?) from the silver age and I am questioning if grading it enhances it's value enough to justify the $79 cost to get it graded. From what I have read and talked to local comic book store employees it is anywhere between a 2 and a 5. Ha! I know that is a huge range, but that is the feedback I have been getting. The cover is intact with some noticeable wear around corners/edges and some creases. The staples are loose and off color the book is complete with no ink smears or writing, the back cover is intact and it is just a decent copy of a 47 year old book. I was hoping for some feedback from some collectors like yourselves about if this seems like a waste/good use of $79 to get this book graded as the prices for ungraded books and graded books in this condition seem to be pretty close. I don't know if I am willing to sell it - It is my favorite book from my favorite series, but I am a poor college student and could use a financial bump to pay off some debt - so my questions are: 1) If you owned this book would you grade it? 2) If so why/why not? 3) What is the "street" price range for this book (I know it differs greatly than price guide values) 4) Any other insight you could give a newbie like me would be much appreciated. | If it's possible, post a pretty good size scan of both the front and back covers (remember to not crop the edges of the book in the scan...we like to see those). From there, you'll get a consensus from fellow members on the actual/possible grade of the comic...You are correct when stating there is a world of difference between 2 and 5. Since you already know that you are trying to sell this book for "top dollar" We'll also try to let you know what to expect in possible sale prices (for both slabbed and unslabbed/raw). Until then, maybe check ebay for other sales that might be comparable to yours...this might help you get an idea of what you are in for. and welcome

That's a valuable comic. Even in Good condition (2.0) it's worth several hundred dollars.
First of all, a range from 2 to 5 is silly. Take a look at FREE-BIGS to get a better idea of the grade. And put up scans of the front & back covers here to get some advice from forum members. People are generally pretty good at grading around here, myself excepted.
Second, I don't think that a CGC grade will raise the inherent value of the comic at a very low to mid-grade. But if you're going to be selling it on ebay or some such online marketplace, buyers will bid with much more confidence if they see that CGC case, especially if you're a new seller.
I think ultimately I'd base my decision on how much I paid for the comic. If I got it for a dime in '61, the sure I'd submit it for grading. It's going to sell for well over $79 I'm sure, so you'll still be making a nice profit. If I bought it three years ago and paid a couple hundo, I'd think twice before eating even more into said profit.
Of course if it really were me I wouldn't sell it at all. I'm trying to get all the Silver Age GLs now, so I'm looking to buy not sell.

| Thanks for the replies so far - the Free Bigs were helpful and I was very conservative in my grading - If it was between one and the other I answered with the worse of the categories. It cam back a 4 on the free bigs site. So - I guess if you all would be so kind as to address my previous questions and we'll use a 4 rating as an arbitrary "likely return grade" that would be very helpful. I do have quite a few silver age low mid and hi number books as well. I guess I don't really have the money to complete the series, but perhaps someday I will. Is this a book that will generally increase in value even though it is on the low end of the grade spectrum? Or is it just kind worth whatever sentimental value I have? It is easily my favorite comic of my favorite hero. Who knows though - If I could get some decent coin for it - I may be tempted - although I still don't really know if spending $79 to get it graded is worth the investment and that's what I really want to find out. Thanks!

I'd say my original answer still stands. It depends some on what you originally paid for it. Will it fetch "more" with the CGC grade? I think if it does it's because bidders are more confident with that. If you offer a return policy (and you should!) and high res scans, then I think you'll be just fine without the case. if you're really nervous about it, give the listing a reserve price, but beware, reserves can turn some buyers off.
With super high grades, CGC will almost definitely fetch a higher price. For a Fine or below, and it sounds like yours is definitely below Fine, CGCing it is not a guarantee of more money.
This is all assuming that you're selling on ebay or something like that. is this correct?
