Hey everyone,

Well I've been buying Marvel Graphic novels for a few months now and have grown very interested in this comic world. But I want to take it further and start collecting (real) comic books, store them in a box and read them only once by me.

Now I guess my question would be should I just focus on lets say the "ultimate series" or the uncanny xmen series etc. or should I just buy what I find cheap and hope that it may have value in the future.

Im basically asking will the ultimate collection be worth money in 20 years or will time tell that? Are only owning the first few issues of a series be worth money some day? Am I wasting my time lol.
I just figure instead of buying these graphic novels which will be worth nothing in the future I should "invest" in the real deals.

And is buying off this site and ebay the way to go?

Im basically a young grasshoper hoping some jedi will teach me a few things.

Thanks

As everyone here will eagerly tell you, modern comics will most likely never be worth anything. Your average comic could well go down in value, especially if any kind of damage whatever happens to it. Tiny bent corner or whatever and the grade goes down, and with it the value. Take a look at the last say 10 or 15 years worth of comics in the database (http://www.comicspriceguide.com, use the search box toward the top of the page for any series) and you'll not see much increase in value at all.

There are of course exceptions, but for the most part folks won't be able to tell you in advance what's going to sky rocket in value. If that was easy to tell, folks would snatch them all up and then everyone would have them, thus no increase in value.

My observation is that back issues from the early half of the 70's and back are the ones that steadily increase in value, more or less, over the long run. If you want to collect with an eye to making money, try to find good deals on ebay for high grade issues of popular titles from this era and hope for the best.

But really, if you want to get into this for the money, you're going to have to do some hard work. You can't just snatch up new issues and sit on them for 20 years waiting for the money to pour in. If you're enjoying reading the comics though, then you win. Buy what you like, read them, keep them in good shape, and you'll be happy. As happy as me!

Never ever enter into a "hobby" expecting it to make you money, that is investing, not enjoying. If your comics do become valuable, it should be the bonus, not the goal. Read and collect what you enjoy, not because you think it might become valuable.

With a very few exceptions, no one here collects comics to make a profit, they simply enjoy the medium.

What Speedy and the Joker have said.........

If you have been buying the trades and enjoy reading them, keep doing it that way.  It is cheaper.

If you cannot wait for the next trade to come out, then buy the single issues.

If you want to start collecting, buy both....but it will not be an investment.

If you are looking for an investment, buy an index fund, or heck, even US savings bonds have a better ROI than comics (unless you find some jewels at yard sales, etc).

Comics shouldn't be bought with only investment in mind (unless you've purchased an older comic that already has value behind it)...They were created for people to love and read..See the comic work inside of the books...Not to be traded at higher value...IF they become worth more then nice but comics as an investment..no. Unless you could see into the future as to which ones will be worth money..I think it's a waste of time.

hey! i was there in the late 80s' and early 90s' i'll admit i was part of the problem..but the

real truth of the medium is you gotta love art or reading probably both this concept is sorely lacking in todays society...will comics ever reach the heights of that time i highly doubt it..

it's because speculators or investors have seen the track record of the past as well as

the environment today..there is $$$ to be made right now ,here today, you just gotta know how....i have my own ideas ..it's pretty lame, but at least i have one...back in the day it was the wild wild west - one dealer tells you it's vf+ then another dealer tells you it's fine...

dealer #1 is selling you the stuff and dealer 2 is buying your stuff i don't know about you

but that's happened to me before..a lot..now i guess we have the law ..the cgc or them other guys...i've learned if you're going play the game, learn the rules, play by the rules

or quit...kind of deep ...hope you catch...i think there are alot of members here making $$$

so don't lie, let him play ...if you want to be helpful teach him the rules, if you don't

sell him some "watchmen" you folks know what i mean, that's one way to learn-the hard way

i hope whoever is reading this understands that the more people interested in the comic

medium the better for the whole...thnxs
